I'm thinking of purchasing Gears 3 because it looks pretty awesome, however, I haven't played the first 2. Are the campaign modes good enough to warrant playing the first two first so that I can know what is going on in the story? Or should I just buy it for the multiplayer?

I loved the first two for the single-player. I couldn't tell you about their multi-player because I can't stand playing FPS' over the net (see The Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory)
Do you enjoy single-player? If so, buy them. If you don't give a shit, there's no point. Just buy the third.
I enjoyed the single player in the first two games and never touched the multiplayer. Be warned that the final boss in GoW1 is a pain in the ass, though. The second game improves on pretty much everything.
I enjoy single player more than the multiplayer for 90% of games.
Then you might as well play the first two before the third. I for some reason played Uncharted 2 before the first one, and I've been kicking myself ever since.

That's the thing. If you start with the most improved, going back to the older ones can be annoying. i.e. Etrian Odyssey 1 and 2.
It is definitely the third in a trilogy. if you want to get anything emotionally out of the story then you should go back and play the first two. Also Baird is awesome.

I would buy the first two, play the campaigns, and keep an eye on Amazon for a sale on #3, because Amazon does things like that.
The second is better than the first, but they both hold up well and the campaigns aren't too long. Plus, they should be super cheap by now.

This too. As dumb as it all is, I love those soul-patch doo-rag wearing motherfuckers. There are (definitely for #2, I'm assuming for #3) character beats that will be far more satisfying if you've played it all.
