I never understood why Wonder Woman wouldn't kill people, I mean she grew up with a race of Amazons that learn how to use swords and spears.

    Those aren't for show.

I thought that was one of the things about her: unlike the big S and Bats, she does kill.

Cause she certainly doesn't shy from blood in this new series.

Ironic enough this is one of the reasons why I support the new universe, I want to see DC ditch the whole "killing makes you evil" notion they had for ages. It seemed like they wanted to move beyond it at times but some people wouldn't let them get pass WW snapping Max's neck.

Marvel has moved beyond such things but I suppose DC is held to different standards by some.

Finally got around to reading some of my comics from this week. I really liked Action #2 and Swamp Thing surprisingly. I don't know why but ST is clicking with me way more that Animal Man. I did read AM #2 but still not feeling it. It might be the art/layouts but I don't care about or don't get why I should care for the overall story but for Swamp Thing I totally did.

God dammit it guys. You're making Huntress sound so appealing. I spend more and more money on comics each month!!

Also I bought Flash #1 today based almost entirely on the fact that it has such an amazing splash/title page. That is like the definition of what I want to see more of in comics: more dynamic and well-designed pages to push the medium. And it was pretty interesting too, I'm going to continue getting it at least until the end of the first arc.

    I keep spending money whyyyyy

OMAC was pretty good, even though I knew the last-page reveal was coming. The art was great, and the dialogue was enjoyable, particularly Rocker Bonn's reluctant rampage, and Brother Eye's doting mother act.
It also had the kind of world-building that makes me excited for the new DCU. There's a new Amazing Man, Checkmate and Cadmus are now linked, Sarge Steel's a part of the former, and Max Lord's wearing a purple jumpsuit with weird hard-light stuff floating around his head.

That said, smashing up such new stuff, while also putting in callbacks to old stories like the OMAC Project, causes a bit of nerdy cognitive dissonance, for me. Because when Brother Eye mentions how Max Lord once subjugated him, I start wondering if Batman still built Brother Eye, if OMAC Project still happened, if Max Lord still killed Ted Kord and therefore still has a history with Booster Gold, how that works with the totally-rebooted JLI, etc.

It makes me wish, not for the first time, that DC had just done a complete, across-the-board reboot. Or at least put out a History of the New DCU book.

I remember telling Manapul some time ago when he was doing the Legion book I knew he was going to become a big player, kind of happy to see I was right.

That said I wonder how many people have gone and bought the Legion books he did with Jim Shooter, must be cheap and might become worth something one day.

If people is into that sort of thing.

Penguin was good, too, just to throw that out there.

For being one of Batman's lamest villains, he comes off as really threatening. Not to Batman, really, but to all of the regular people.

What we were talking about early, and what I think Rans was complaining about a couple pages ago, is that due to the way DC is promoting it and the fact that Paul Levitz is writing it, a lot of us are speculating that
the DCnU Huntress will be a merger of the other two; Helena Wayne who some how ended up on Earth 1 and became Helena Bertinelli. And that the ending of the series will lead to Mr. Terrific eventually discovering Earth 2 through all his crazy multi-dimensional shit, which will lead to JSA.

Was there anything even implying that? Because that's a story I'm dying to see.

  • AriviaArivia I Like A Challenge Earth-1Registered User regular
    Nope!
Helena Bertinelli is a sexy strong character who shots bad guys dead.

    That's it.

Give it five issues until she's promoted to time/multiverse cop and you guys are all left furious.

Although DC also said it'd tie into Birds of Prey, so I assume she'll join up with them after it's over.

  • Witch_Hunter_84Witch_Hunter_84 Registered User regular
It's a six issue series, so I can see it either graduating the character to tie in to the Birds of Prey or the Multiverse, but not likely both.

If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten in your presence.

Why isn't she just the same as she was two months ago since she falls under the bubble of the bat-family?

  • TobagganTobaggan Registered User regular
Huntress joining Birds of Prey would make me pick the title back up probably. And just to reiterate, Huntress was way good and people should probably be reading it. She's sexy in a completely non-cheesy way and is a strong character.

But since I'm really a DC Animated Universe fan at heart, I would do damn near anything if it resulted in a Huntress/Question teamup series. I'd buy two copies of every issue.

  • Witch_Hunter_84Witch_Hunter_84 Registered User regular
The Question really does need to come back in the New 52.

Question exists in the New 52

    It's Renee Montoya

I don't really see them going back to Charlie anytime soon, which is fine since both of them are great characters.

The thing is, DCAU Question was nothing like how the Question actually acts. I love it, but a Huntress/Question series wouldn't be anything like the DCAU couple unless they change his character wildly.

I actually could see DCAU Question as the natural evolution of Denny O'Neil's Question

It'd take some finagling, but it could make sense without a drastic overhaul

Just something that'd make him snap, yet still maintain his desire to be a hero of sorts

Did that get confirmed somewhere? I know the question (heh) was a little up in the air from the bit in Batwoman where Kate looks at Renee's picture. She's not in the GCPD anymore, certainly.

And honestly, all three Questions (Vic, DCAU, and Renee) are pretty great characters, so they can use pretty much any version they want and I'll be happy.

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
I'm not sure if they officially confirmed it but it would be shocking if she wasn't. One of the big things of the reboot was diversity and well, yeah.

Plus she is an important supporting character of Batwoman's who is a decently big character

    Well, there's this from DC's preview-blog.
This Wednesday marks the release of HUNTRESS #1. Written by the character’s creator Paul Levitz and illustrated by HEROES and RED ROBIN artist Marcus To, the first issue in this six-issue miniseries follows Helena Bertinelli as she travels home to Italy on a grave mission.

Looking for more reasons to pick up the book? HUNTRESS has story connections to the following three series:

    • BIRDS OF PREY
    • MISTER TERRIFIC
    • Next year’s JUSTICE SOCIETY

We won’t spoil just how they’re all connected but believe us when we say you won’t want to miss out.

Really, out of all four I read this week (Action, Detective, Red Lanterns, Stormwatch) only Stormwatch didn't exceed what the first issue put out. I really liked Detective and RL, and I like where Morrison is taking Action. Stormwatch 1 was a good hook, and I was interested in more of the characters, but 2 just seemed kinda messy. I didn't think it was bad though, just crammed with info I guess.

It also doesn't help that I am not even a LITTLE bit familiar with Wildstorm characters. I only know Grifter by sight and only now know the name.

I bought OMAC 2 when I picked up my order. I will read it and consider adding it to my list of trades to get in February/March. I'm ordering Ray #1, too. I want to see Shade and check if it's worth getting in singles or trade-waiting.

It's going to be hard, I think Batman & Superman should firmly be anti-killing, but they're going to have to work with Wonder Woman. It will be weird if they're okay when she kills, because they're bad dudes that deserve it anyway.

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
Well they already have to work with people who will kill

I mean Batman is practically best friends with Jim Gordon, who as a police officer is willing to kill if it is necessary.

    CYpGAPn.png
  • LuxLux Registered User regular
But it's different for people who have powers or are self-appointed vigilantes. I think Batman can deal with cops shooting, say, a hostage taker because they don't have any tools. But even if Wonder Woman is fighting Mongul, it's expected & established that she should be able to beat him without ripping his throat out.

But, yeah, the sword & weapons have to be used for something. It's something to mull over.

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
    That is the thing though

she doesn't just murder dudes willy nilly

she only kills if it is what the situation requires. If she can take someone out without murder, she'll do it. She snapped Max Lord's neck because he told her straight to her face(while tied up to the lasso of truth) she had no way to stop him and he would have Superman kill everyone in the next few moments after he recovered.

    CYpGAPn.png
  • LuxLux Registered User regular
Right, but the discussion was that if in the new DCnU, we should get past "Killing is bad" as a central moral. If we get further away from it with Wonder Woman, where she can just kill bad guys willy nilly (and again, why wouldn't she, she's trained in it), then it's going to take some work to reconcile that with her buds Batman & Superman.

  • SolarSolar Registered User regular
I like the "killing is bad" as a central model. It makes a lot of sense given the nature of superheroes and superhero morality, and is personally something which I support and so like to see in my heroes. It also makes superheroes distinct from other action heroes, because they actually make efforts not to kill their enemies rather than just blowing away anyone who is in front of them.
