Doesn't matter how good SS is when sites start handing out awards this year it will be overlooked. Video game journalist reviewers are not going to give game of the year to a Wii game. They didn't to Galaxy 2 and they won't here. Maybe we'll luck out and Uncharted 3 could clean up some GOTY stuff, just not at Gametrailers.
Huh? It won best platformer over at GameSpot. Red Dead Redemption and Starcraft II won GOTY and Reader GOTY respectively.
X-Play had Epic Mickey on the list:
Game of the Year
1. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
2. Disney Epic Mickey
3. Mass Effect II
4. NBA 2K11
5. Red Dead Redemption
6. Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty
Mass Effect II won.
IGN's list:
Halo: Reach
Heavy Rain
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption Super Mario Galaxy 2
Mass Effect II won.
You seem to espouse some bias against the Wii instead of the fact that it may have just been not the preferred title of the specific audience these awards aim at. Galaxy 2 was great, but against Mass Effect II and Red Dead Redemption? It just felt like more Galaxy to me, while I personally felt Mass Effect II was a full well-rounded experience. (Never touched Red Dead myself, not my thing)
This year Skyward Sword will go up against Skyrim, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Portal 2, Uncharted 3, Batman: Arkham City, Xenoblade, Witcher 2, and Mario Kart. Tough crowd, and from what I've played so far, it's great, but not number one in that list. Zelda's great, but I admit I've never really felt for Link or his supporting cast. I'm in it for the dungeons and gameplay. I think that's what prevents recent Zeldas and Marios from really clinching it these days. People want a larger, more character-driven experiences.

To be fair, Galaxy 2's problems when it came to the year-end awards is that it came out at the start of the year, and everyone forgot about it. It's the same thing with the Oscars... movies that come out before, say, fall have a very, very hard time getting nominated.
So a knee-jerk talking head says something inflammatory. I'm having a hard time getting worked up about it, and I'm really looking forward to Skyward Sword.
At any rate, while the forums were down we missed a story about the most epic bullshittery ever:
"I'm going to go to the restroom," said Microsoft's Cherie Lutz, "but when I get back I really want to hear this new idea."
"Oh yeah, it's awesome, can't wait."
Twisted Pixel chief creative officer Josh Bear had responded with abounding confidence, if only to mask the truth. Because the fact of the matter, the fact that he and CEO Mike Wilford were all too aware of, as they sat in Redmond, WA Tex-Mex restaurant The Matador, was this: The idea wasn't "awesome." It was nonexistent.
The developer had scored a major meeting with Microsoft to pitch a new game developed exclusively with Kinect (then "Project Natal") in mind. It needed to be big, it needed to be smart and -- most pressingly to Wilford and Bear at that exact moment -- it needed to exist.
It wasn't that Wilford and Bear weren't prepared. It's just that the original idea they wanted to pitch (one that was actually first conceived for the Wii) wasn't a good fit for the device, which they only became aware of once they saw it for themselves.
"It was really cool, but it didn't have the fidelity to do what we wanted, it couldn't really track finger movements," Bear said. "I was like 'Oh shit, we're going to pitch this whole thing and they're gonna know that it's not possible with the hardware.'"
It was just a few moments after this realization that Microsoft took the Twisted Pixel execs to dinner to hear the pitch. They were suddenly empty handed, but the meeting was still a great opportunity for a small studio, and it was one that Bear and co. were loathe to leave on the table.
Wilford and Bear struggled in The Matador's lobby to come up with something -- anything they could pitch. It was then that Wilford recalled an old Wii concept of Bear's that the team had shelved involving controlling a marionette with Wiimotes.
"I had no idea what the game would be, but then I read somewhere that Miyamoto was going to do something with Mario and it was going to be like, marionette Mario," Bear said. "We didn't want it to look like we were ripping Miyamoto off for the 50 millionth time."
The two agreed that it was probably their best shot at salvation, but it was barely even a mechanic, let alone a whole concept. In fact, the first opportunity they had to flesh the idea out at all was when Lutz excused herself to the restroom.
"Mike's kind of chatting with other Microsoft people, and I'm like, frantically looking around the restaurant just trying to think of ideas," Bear said. "To my left, there was this painting of a skeleton cowboy and I looked at it and just -- literally -- I was like 'OK: Skeleton cowboy that needs to get revenge on posse ... marionette. Fuck it.'"
The skeletal work of art that inspired The Gunstringer.
Lutz returned to the table and Bear proceeded to pitch her on the painting hanging directly behind her head.
"Yeah, Cherie, so, we've had this idea for a long time, umm, a marionette, and you use your hands like this, and you're a skeleton cowboy," Bear said. "I was lying my ass off, and Mike was just sitting there backing me up."
Microsoft loved it, and work on what would come to be known as The Gunstringer began almost immediately.
A year or so later, Bear would sheepishly admit to Lutz how she unwittingly greenlit a concept that was mere minutes old. Though initially a little ... irritated, Lutz was quickly able to laugh it off.
"So it's kind of a running tradition now, when we meet with Cherie and the Microsoft crew, we say 'OK, look around the room, what's the next game gonna be?'" Bear said. "The last restaurant we went was this weird French-Asian place and there was a geisha statue. I said 'OK, Cherie, it's Kinect Robo-Geishas, is that cool?'"
It seems to have changed quite a bit since the E3 where the controls straight-up didn't work due to radio interference. At least it looked graphically interesting then.
Now it's...well, it's the first Zelda game I'll probably never play. Which is kinda crazy.'
EDIT: And Webb actually does have a point. Imagine how they'd be able to expand on their watercolor motif on a modern system with modern graphics.
Nononono Unbreakable, I could understand you not being interested in the new Zelda or whatnot, but don't agree with Webb, it only strengthens her succubus ways.
Seriously though, I agree that the extra power could expand their watercolor art style, but that wasn't the point Webb was making. She wants Uncharted: Links Fortune, mature, gritty, realistic. We'll probably get a new realistic Zelda on the WiiU, but that's just not what Nintendo's going for.
Your point was good, but your point =/= Webb's point.
In other words, she's terrible and has terrible opinions. :P
For the record, I think Webb is absolutely spot on. Though I loved the years that I played Zelda and other "Nintendo-era" games ... I've really gone tired of the aesthetic. I know that's what Nintendo is going for, and I know that plenty of people still enjoy those games, but please don't dismiss those of us who think otherwise as being "terrible".
My tastes tend to be cyclical. Right now, I happen to dig a lot of games with that "mature, gritty, realistic" look ... a la, Deux Ex: HR, Gears 3, and soon Skyrim. I know a few years ago, I was big into games with that "mature, fantastical, epic" feel (a la many JRPGs) and now I'm bored of that. A few years from now, who knows what I want? Maybe I'll dig the retro/Nintendo-era look and gameplay again. Anyway, Webb is just telling us her opinion. Fantastic! Can we move on now?
So a game called X-Men Destiny is coming out this week. This is interesting for a couple of different reasons. First, Activision buried the living fuck out of it. I mean, there's been pretty much zero previews for this, even though it's the goddamn X-Men from goddamn Activision. (Probably because the people who played it at PAX said it blew chunks.)
And then there's the developers: Silicon Knights. You know, the guys who took over a decade to make the fairly mediocre Too Human? Now they've pretty much proven that they can't hit a deadline.
...if I were Dennis Dyack, I'd be very worried right about now.
I know we have our own personal white whales and shit, but 'abandoning' Eternal Darkness to make a trilogy of Too Human (which they've apparently abandoned anyway) doesn't make me want to give a shit about anything they care to make at this point. Even if it was ED2.

Destiny hurts me because the premise is awesome: Make your own mutant and choose a side! X-Men or the Brotherhood!
I was thinking all Mass Effect X-Men! As it stands, it's more of a DC Universe Online... offline, with less customization.

Uhhh, Mass Effect 2 came out like January of that year. I don't think Galaxy 2's early release prevented it from taking home the Oscars. I think people just really, really, REALLY like ME2 and RDR more. I am one of those peopl.
@Automaticzen is correct, I feel. Skyward Sword may be totally awesome and the best Zelda game ever, but it's not Uncharted. Or Arkham. Or Skyrim. Or even Saint's Row. Or Assassin's Creed! Deus Ex! Skyward is finally reaching the point where it looks cool and interesting to me, and I already know that unless U3, AC and Skyrim suck all the balls, it won't be in my top 3.
Competition is a bitch when you look at games that are on more than one console.
We're asked to pick a character and given a choice of three individuals in the crowd. The first is Grant Alexander, a run-of-the-mill jock with dreams of being a pro football player. The second is Adrian Luca, the unfortunate son of the lead of The Purifiers, an anti-mutant group. Lastly is Aimi Yoshida, a young Japanese girl who is spared a future of being imprisoned at a mutant confinement camp and smuggled into San Francisco.
...
At this point the game jumps into its character development suite and asks us to select from a list of base abilities. On offer is energy manipulation, shadow abilities and brute strength. Since this selection dictates Aimee's skill progression for the rest of the game we spend a few moments picturing which of the X-Men is most bad ass. Turns out it's Nightcrawler, so shadow powers it is...
The crux of the upgrading system is based around acquiring and developing X-Genes. This is the strand of mutant DNA that gives all the heroes in the X-Men universe their powers. These genes can be earned from characters or found hidden around different environments.
Additional X-Genes can be equipped to augment your chosen character's standard set of powers, allowing the player to mix the powers of other heroes and create an all powerful hybrid. For example it's possible to take Nightcrawler's powers and mix in Quicksilver's super-speed and Wolverine's healing factor.
Well, I guess there's some hope. Activision runs weirdly hot and cold when it comes to pushing games... I seem to remember they did next to nothing for the James Bond game that came out at the same time as the Wii Goldeneye redo, and from what I heard that game wasn't half bad. And it was James Bond, for chrissake.
Then again, Activision's all about deadlines, something Silicon Knights has precious little experience with.
Edit: Picking a favorite between Mass Effect 2, RDR, and Mario Galaxy 2... geez. I'd have a better time deciding which one of my kidneys I like better.
I refuse to care about X-Men anything until they can feature in a primary role a mutant whose only ability is that they can change the colour of their eyes at will.
It's nifty and all that they can feature mutants that they can weaponise, but it's just too damned convenient. Boring mutants may not sell books, however don't expect me to give a shit just because somebody ends up with a Deus Ex Machina power.

His mutant power is he looks a bit like a bird and his bones are weak. He cannot actually fly.

I think it's interesting we're focusing on Skyward Sword's lack of innovation but we're not really discussing Uncharted's lack of innovation as well. Outside of a engine improvements and some AI adjustments, I was hard pressed to find any real gameplay differences in Uncharted 2.

Well, I mean you could try to compare them directly like that but since Zelda is traditionally an action puzzle game with zero narrative, and Uncharted is a game that is primarily grounded in its narrative, it seems kind of silly.
Zelda games are 100% about the gameplay, while Uncharted games are at least 70% about the narrative and acting, conservatively.
EDIT: And yeah, Marvel has already done that "useless Mutant" bit to death, it's just you don't see them because they frequently don't become members of a globe trotting superhero team.

Uncharted won't have any innovation. It'll just look very pretty with some really great characters.
See my previous comment:

Innovation tends to come from smaller titles. Big titles take a safe experience and boost it up: bigger set pieces, decent writing, good characters, etc. Uncharted 1 & 2 are mostly the same. Occasionally you get lucky and a big title does something different (Assassin's Creed) and then vastly improves on that (Assassin's Creed 2), but then they'll pretty much just refine what they've got.

But then you'd be comparing 2 games to 15+ games.
It's a much harder comparison, yes, but if you just want to pick the last 2 regular Zelda games to the current Uncharted games ... well, it's a wash on both games.
At least one good thing came out of Too Human. Developers have seemed to stop promising "epic" trilogies before their first game is even finished. Probably realizing it's not up to them at all if they get to continue, and nobody has fond memories of a game with only 1/3 of the plot and ends on a shitty cliffhanger.

Ah, Arkham City. That's my GOY and I haven't even played it yet. My 360 is yearning for it in ways none of my systems have yearned for a game since DKCR.

Going to have to disagree there, Tim. X-Men: First Class had a bunch of mutants(sans the cool guys of course) with boring powers and the whole time I was wondering "Why didn't they cast mutants with better powers?"
It tells you something when Beast of all people was kicking ass.
Beast...the guy whose power is to be hairy and acrobatic.
