I have ire for people who use the phrase 'militant' to describe 'passionate' or 'loud and annoying'.
Also religion is not helpful in spreading good ideas, its helpful in piggybacking on good ideas everyone already inately understands, articulating them well, then lumping about 90% destructive and harmful bullshit in with it which is considered morally and ethically equal to the good.
I think the vehicle of spreading good ideas that you're looking for is 'education'

Also 'obscure' passages is a stretch. The best (and some genuinely beautiful and stunning) passages in the abrahamic texts are few and far between, lost amongst the drivel and the dastardly, you dont have to look far to find some heinous stuff.
Anyone who says "religion is bad" is an idiot, as the definition for what religion has been, is, or could be, is so impossible to pin down its pointless to confront. Instead you confront the specific ideas of religions. And in terms of the abrahamic ones, they are based around texts, and you can and should be opposed to large swathes of what those texts say if you have any decency. If you dont believe all of the texts, then by the definition within those texts you arent religious in that sense, but you can obviously be in others, the ontologies of the Abrahamic religions is far from solid and specific, which is why its stupid to 'oppose' them.
You also should recognize the difference between those specific texts and the cultures of religions over human history.
