I got my dad season 1 on bluray for Christmas, watching it with him made me want to watch the rest all over again. It also got my brain turning over and over, thinking about what we have in store next summer (so fucking far away). Here are some thoughts I've pondered:
I kinda see Breaking Bad as the tragedy of Walter White; the story of a man who goes through a rise and fall very typical of archetypal tragic characters, ie. Brutus, Macbeth, any Shakespeare protagonist really... so with that in mind, one of the most important parts of the fall is the humbling of the protagonist, the moment when he realizes the mistakes he's made, and must be punished for it. I've been thinking that Walt must go through this for the series to end on a resonant note. He can't die the cackling Heisenberg, but I'm not sure I want him to revert completely to pre-cancer Walt. I read an interesting take on the season 5 flashforward to grizzled Walt that described him as a 'third Walt', something between Walt and Heisenberg; I found this intriguing, and I think it is supported by what we already saw in that flashforward... but back to the humbling moment. I think I want to see Hank take Walt down, but I also want it to come about as a result of Jesse's betrayal. We know their relationship is on rocky ground. And the last episode of 5A kinda seems to set them apart finally, but there needs to be something that draws them together again, whatever that may be. And then, I think, something needs to happen that finally, utterly and completely pushes Jesse from Walt; only at this point, I believe, will Walt realize the immensity of his actions, and by then it would be too late. He's done, and Hank gets his victory.
I went off on a bit of a ramble and I may have lost the plot a bit but I've had a lot of time to mull things over. Thoughts?
I agree that Walt has to have some sort of humbling realization, but I think it's probably going to be caused by something bad happening to one or both of his kids. Throughout the entire series Walt's been clinging to the justification that he's just doing this for his family; even when it became obvious that he was making things worse for them, he managed to blame all of their problems on Skyler. If something tragic were to happen to his kids that was unquestionably a direct result of his actions, it would destroy his only justification and he'd have to accept that he was just a selfish asshole. This could also explain the flashforward: something bad goes down, Walt goes into hiding, someone (maybe the Phoenix gang or the cartel) strikes out at his family, and Walt comes back looking for revenge.
But I also agree that a final confrontation between Walt and Jesse is necessary.
I've read other speculation that suggests...
Walt will do something to fulfill his promise that Skyler will love him again (was that in season 5 that he said she'd like him again someday?), which then leads into further speculation he'll turn himself in to aid the authorities in some manner. However, I cannot see Skyler coming around to seeing Walt in an entirely positive light again if something happened to either kid, so who the hell knows?
Whatever happens, I'm certain there is going to be a final confrontation with either Jesse or Hank and neither scenario is going to end well for any of the involved parties.

Seeing Walt get so overtly villainous and terrible and undeniably despicable to Skylar was one of the most gratifying parts of seasons 4/5, in that it finally made the "Skylar's a bitch" camp finally examine the nonsense they'd been spewin' for three seasons.

I just saw Citizen Kane for this article series I'm writing
you
wanna talk Citizen Kane?
There ain't nothing I could say about it that hasn't been covered by other better, smarter critics, but I love it. Favorite parts:
-That montage of the marriage falling apart, which is smarter and a better use of the medium than basically anything in the, what, seventy years since?
-The fantastic use of deep focus/shadow/camera moves, which are even more impressive when you consider the tech they were working with at the time
-The central theme that man is essentially unknowable, even when you have access to the events and people around him, was so far ahead of its time (in cinema, anyway) that it makes the continued existence of the bio-pic genre look sillier and sillier with each passing decade.

Not so great:
-The old-man makeup
aww, I was actually impressed with some of the make-up! I didn't believe that Joseph Cotton played old Leland
that montage was fucking mindblowing, and the deep focus and the way that they managed to actually make use of it so much was impressive, even though I knew that that was the thing about the movie
I actually didn't have much of a clue about the structure and how the narrative unfolded, despite knowing the Rosebud stuff, I found it a really engaging narrative
also, man, The Simpsons took a lot of stuff from that movie

Season 5 is unbelievable but the season 4 finale is still the best single episode of the series. It is a masterpiece of pacing and tension and plotting.

And how the fuck is Gus the only honorable guy on this show other than Jesse?
And then...

There's that scene in End Times or Crawl Space (?) where Jesse confronts Walt - and I was stumped. I absolutely could not decide if Walt was telling the truth because I couldn't believe that either Walt or Gus would murder a child.
And for whatever reason I had to pause and do some errand. I came back to the show and Jesse had the gun to Walt's head, and I realized Walt's the one in complete control of this situation.
I thought, would Walt be capable of killing a kid? No, I didn't think so. But...would Walt be capable of cooking up just the precise dose of poison to send a kid to the hospital without killing him. Shit, that sounds exactly like something Walt might do, the sneaky bastard.
