Re: live music, I get a lot of sketching done during a weekly jazz night at a bar. Turns out jazz musicians are pleasantly humble and socially awkward; I've made good friends by chatting inbetween sets .
About a year ago I decided life's too short to be a slave to my insecurities and it's working out pretty well.
Friendly and happy as I am, I have no desire to hang out with anyone.... EVER! My family and my wife fullfill me more than friends ever could.
Though, the last group of cool people I met were in my Japanese class. I met 3 designers there who were far too similar to me and a friendship bloomed because of our similar interests, we even traveled to Japan together. So, I suggest going to a class/workshop which you find interesting. Odds are, you'll find someone there who are like minded.
Ah God. Meeting people at places where there is live music is literally like a nightmare for me. I love music. I love listening to music. I could not give less of a shit about hearing a band live. It's almost one of those situations where it's even difficult for me to comprehend how anyone cares about it. So when I go to these types of events I feel so incredibly out of place because it seems like the people there are from another planet. A planet where people care about listening to stupid bands live.
I think it depends a lot on the music you like, and the types of shows you go to. I went to some weird chill art-rock band show with a co worker and while they were pretty good, I felt brain-dead and there was just no energy to the room.
Go to a basement show for a punk band where its hot and everyone's pushing and shoving and throwing drinks around, that's entirely different.
Or go see a metal band to punch people in the face(don't actually do this). All of those are totally different experiences that are merely enhanced by the environment and the music, its not so much about sitting around to watch a bunch of jerkoffs play the same stuff you've heard 100x already.
I am sorry but if the music involves an electric guitar I see no reason to hear it live. It's just the same shit (or more likely the same shit but slightly worse) coming out of speakers much louder than usual.
EDIT: ND - If you want to meet people, you're going to have to put yourself out of your comfort zone a little. Volunteering and parties are the typical responses, but don't forget that the event will reflect the people there. Want to talk to smart people? Go to a lecture or a exhibition opening. And don't worry too much about having only a small group of close friends though, that's pretty much the norm.

this is an incredibly ignorant view of electric guitars
synths? synths I could accept you having this view.
You an F1 fan Mustang? I didn't know that. Cool stuff. I have actually been thinking about doing a series of portraits of drivers. The only thing stopping me is how incredibly weird looking Fernando Alonso is.
I am, I've been wanting to do a Senna portrait to frame with a signed program that has been sitting on top of my book shelf for a while. I just keep holding off because my skills aren't up to scratch yet and I'm frightened I'll pump out some naff looking 'carnival art' type of thing.
A justifiable concern to be certain. I feel that way about everything I draw or paint ever.
I think next year I am going to be going to the Korean GP as well as the new US GP. Very excited, never been to an F1 race before. Though of course...both are a year or more away.

Oh man, you're in for a treat. Try to get on the pit straight, there is nothing like the sound of an F1 start. I used to go every year when we had the race in Adelaide, but haven't been to a race since Melbourne in 97. Me and the wife were thinking of going to the Singapore or Melbourne race in 2013 when our girl is a little older.
I'm really looking forward to the Austin GP, the track is looking like it's going to be pretty great.
Yeah...too bad it's in Austin. There are so many amazing places in the US they could put it...and they chose Austin. Don't get me wrong, Austin is the nicest city I have been to in Texas...but that's not saying a whole lot. Well it will be a road trip... and those are always fun. Singapore is one I would love to go to but it might be hard to convince my buddies to do three races so close together. Maybe I will see you there in 2013.
(I could make this post longer by talking about other, less-awesome topics, but I feel like I should make and effort to lay off my standard old man griping about random shit.)
EDIT: Whoa, earthquake aftershock just went through.

Did you know that someone could strangle you for this and it wouldn't even be considered a crime? It's true!

Impossible. I don't have a neck...my head just sits directly on my shoulders.

Electric guitars? No. No.
I love it when the strategy for making your commercial work is just "make it hella good and they'll remember it."
Erhm, whoops, sorry.

If one of those long haired Ringu girls popped out on me I'd probably just kick it in the face, but I never found The Ring to be that scary.
