I am sorry about the thing I said
For what it's worth, I'm praying like nuts for you guys
Okay, so Medicaid is only covering my wife until six weeks after she delivers. I imagine getting further insurance is going to be a bitch, to put it mildly. I don't make enough money to pay for half a million dollars in cancer treatment. Does anybody have any advice here? My wife is friends with the Director of Operations for cancer services network here in Abilene and we're talking to her, but we won't know anything for a while and I figure it's better to do something sooner rather than later.
like I told you via pm earlier, look into clinical trials. they are often little to no cost to patient.

You're gonna cry a bit, you at least can lean on each other through this. But you're gonna get through it. That's really your only option. You either move forward or you don't, so I'm sure you'll make the right choice.

However, keep in mind that they are trials. You're basically rolling the dice at that point for the sake of free healthcare, but it's potentially not even healthcare because it hasn't made it through trials yet. I can't emphasize enough that this should be an option you two should be hesitant to pursue unless you have exhausted all other options for getting proper care.

im so sorry for your situation. I find it especially depressing and horrible that I read your first post and thought 'i bet they have issues with medical care if they are in the US.' but this isnt the thread for debates about american healthcare criticisms really. I'll just say I boil with rage at that shit. last thing any sick person needs on top of a serious disease is far more financial stress than is necessary.

She also probably won't be eligible, pregnant and nursing mothers are almost never allowed to get involved in clinical trials except under very specific circumstances (i.e drugs for pregnant and nursing mothers).
That said, they are trials but most of the ones you'd be involved in are Phase III where the primary risk is that it isn't as efficient or cost effective as an alternative treatment. Phase I was the first in man safety trials and usually only open to young, healthy men where they look for toxicity, Phase II is where they look to see if it works and Phase III is a continuance of that assuming that they saw some success in Phase II and also a comparison against existing treatments.
So you probably won't be eligible for a trial over the period when it's going to matter, but Phase III isn't that big of a gamble as people have made out - it will be medicine that works, it just might not work any better than the current treatment.
I'm guessing that you're going to be looking at alternatives to breast feeding anyway, because of the cancer therapies so it might still be worth looking into, just don't be surprised if your not eligible.
It's classic Hodgkin's, the way he put it, there are 4 cell types and hers is not the "bad" type. There are obviously risks with beginning any kind of treatment, but until we get a chest X-ray, an MRI of the abdomen and a bone marrow biopsy we won't know what stage she's in and what treatment is required. If she's in Stage 3 or 4, she will need chemotherapy which is the riskiest situation while pregnant. Fortunately, the doctor seems to think that they can start radiation treatment while she is pregnant and quickly wrap up with a combination of radiation and chemotherapy after she delivers, and maybe get it all done within six weeks after her delivery.
Okay, now the problem. She's on PCCM, which is like a Medicaid HMO. We can't see any doctors without a referral from her primary care physician, and literally no primary care doctors will see her since they will only get a small portion of what they charge. So we're at a standstill right now; we can't get testing without a referral, we can't get a referral without a PCP, And we can't get a PCP without better insurance.

For healthcare plans, a primary care physician that can give a referral under the plan will be a doctor that's in their network. Charity clinics aren't going to be in their network.

This. We're at the Medicaid office right now begging to be seen by someone in their network.
My mother-in-law said on the way over that this is why the government shouldn't be involved with health care, with no trace of irony
I wanted to ask her where we'd be right now if we didn't have ANY insurance at all but I know that conversation is a road I don't want to go down today

This both sums up the problem with the American Healthcare System and why we can't get it fixed. And it's fucking horrible.

Yeah, my parents are basically the same way. It's infuriating. And then of course they're perfectly willing to try and game the system to save a few bucks but no goddamn socialized healthcare, that's unamerican!

You are the full time student child of/spouse of someone with insurance or you get a job that gets you insurance.
Cause here, you just sorta wander into a hospital and we treat ya.
But you have inferior doctors since you don't pay them $texas!
Yeah it's all bullshit. But whatever. We got a number of a lady whose job it is to help patients find a doctor. She doesn't work at this office. I feel like I'm on some fucked up Treasure Trail game where you get a clue that leads you to the next clue, with the hope that there's a doctor at the end who will say, "Yes it's okay for you get tested to see what stage your cancer is in."

I honestly can't imagine living in a country where getting sick or injured could bankrupt me. I'd be anxious and paranoid all the time.
