Overall plot:
“How to Make It in America follows two enterprising twenty-somethings hustling their way through New York City's fashion scene, determined to achieve their version of the American Dream. Trying to make a name for themselves in the city's competitive fashion scene, Ben Epstein and his friend and business partner Cam Calderon use their street knowledge and connections to make their way up. With the help of their well-connected friend Domingo and Cam's cousin Rene, who has ambitions of his own—a new energy drink called Rasta-Monsta—the burgeoning entrepreneurs set out to make it big.”
Characters:
Ben Epstein, played by Bryan Greenberg
Ben dropped out of design school and felt a bit lost with what he wanted to do with his life. His best friend and main hustler Cam urges him to open up a clothing line, called "Crisp" and now they must try and make ends meet in a tough, competitive New York clothing business. He, however, is constantly overwhelmed by his own insecurities.
Cameron "Cam" Calderon, played by Dominic Rasuk
A man who constantly grinds and hustles, he is quick to say "fuck the Man" until he IS the man. He is Ben's best friend, and the two couldn't have a stronger bromance.
David "Kappo" Kaplan, played by Eddie Kaye Thomas
David is a high school acquaintance of Ben's, and he's kind of like a young, inverse Ari Gold: he has tons of money, but no swagger or appeal to utilize it. He easily helps bankroll Ben and Cam's business ventures, if only for the prospect of getting laid.
Rene Calderon, played by Luis Guzmán
Rene is Cam's gangster cousin, who is also hustling his own brand, an energy drink called Rasta-Monsta (Cam and Ben have worked for him to pay back loans they've taken from Rene to help their own fledgling business). He tries to go the straight and narrow, but finds it tough to do that and go big.
Domingo Brown, played by Scott "Kid Cudi" Mescudi
Domingo is a player with good connections, who is generally around to give Ben and Cam good advice while simultaneously being a hopeless romantic. It is unfortunate, because for how good Kid Cudi's acting abilities are, his character feels very underutilized and almost pointless most of the time.
Rachel Chapman, played by Lake Bell
Rachel is an interior designer and ex-girlfriend of Ben's. Despite going on a trip to Senegal last season, she has returned to NYC and continues to hover in and around Ben's life. Easily the most aggravating character on the show.
How To Make It In America is surprisingly a very, very good show. Despite feeling like Entourage at times, it bests that show by being way, way more down-to-earth. While Entourage focused more on the life and times of people who were already quite rich and could throw around money easily, How To Make It In America is all about people struggling to find the "American Dream" in a very well-realized portrayal of street life in NYC. At the same time, this show has absolutely incredible production design, from the credits, to the interstitials, to the music, to the overall look. It's worth a watch for that alone.
The first season had 8 episodes, and is available on
DVD and
Blu-Ray, and the second season will also be eight episodes.

On the How To Make It In America Facebook they've released the second mixtape CD with beats and songs from the series and songs that were put together with a New York City vibe. It's damn good, honestly.
There's also a contest for the best shirt design, $5,000 for the winner.
If the president had any real power, he'd be able to live wherever the fuck he wanted.
Also, it let me see Lake Bell's boobs. Theyre pretty nice.
