You guys are pretty good at this so I'll give it a shot.
When I was in primary school, we used to get a flyer every year filled with software we could ask our parents to buy at discounted prices. It was usually educational programs like encyclopedias or learn math type stuff. Anyway one time I remember there were actual adventure games available.
Isn't wierd how the smallest thing can just stick in your mind forever?
You see I remember looking at a game on there it's been stuck in my head since then. I haven't seen it since then and I haven't been able to track it down.
My memory of this is hazy at best so here's some clues...
- This was around 1997-1998. So this "game" couldn't have come out after then.
- I think it was a point and click adventure game but it may have been some kind of educational game, which would explain why I'm having a hard time finding it.
- Almost sure the name is either "Galleon" or "Man of War" but it could be something else.
- The game's centerpiece was a large ship from the age of sail or a pirate ship or something like that.
- It was on CD if that makes any difference.
Google search has turned up empty.
It's definitely not this...

or this...

I wish there was a comprehensive database of videogames like IMDB.
Not much to go on, I know, but it's worth a try since I'm starting to think I imagined it.

Was this for Windows? If there were any screenshots of it, was it in first person or did you move a character around the screen?

"The men complain about the food being rotten."
"Well, they can just eat less of it, then."
> Set rations to minimum
"The men are complaining about the lack of food!"
>Set the bos'n to maximum lashing!
>Mutiny. You have been set adrift.

and I would search through games that they made.
but they're listening to every word I say
Sounds like the Oregon Trail of the sea.
I'll have to check this out.
oh my god, reader rabbit!
So I heard about Moby Games before I didn't know it is what it is. I always thought it just a game news site.
I'll try searching there and see if anything rings any bells. Thanks for this!
And thanks for the suggestions guys it wasn't the original Pirates or any Monkey Island game because I think would have remembered those.
What style of graphics was it? Cartoonish (Monkey Island) or realistic (1997-realistic)?
What kind of perspective? Was it isometric top-down kind of deal, where you could survey the area surrounding your ship?
Closer in, with Iso views of various sections of your ship (or areas of the port?)
Closer still: First person perspective with eye-level view of various shipboard areas, towns, etc?
Does the player represent the whole ship & crew?
Just the Captain?
Do you ever upgrade/trade out your ship?
Do you ever command multiple ships, or just the one?
Any little detail might knock someone's memory loose.
I think I've been trying to remember the name of Renegade: the Battle for Jacob's Star FOREVER. Did you play that one? Did it have horribly long loading times?

I spent many hours as a kid playing that and the ground version "The Ancient Art of War".
So good. Really I'm just pushing this obscure game.
It had a pretty brief life. It was terrible.
