I just started going to the gym today, in an attempt to avoid a heart attack before I'm 50 (I'm 41).
Anyway, it was more dull than anything has ever been, and I'm English so I know dull.
I need more music to make the time go, and I am horribly out of touch.
I basically like melodic indie rock and old punk. Old 80s and 90s indie stuff like early REM, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Throwing Muses, Cocteau Twins etc.
Nowadays I find I like things with a melody, or somehow 'pretty'. I guess I'm just a sucker for a hook.
I live in Japan, so I never get exposed to western stuff. And I'm happy to listen to complete trash if I like it, because I'm totally out of the interviews and appearances and heavy rotation on the radio that makes that stuff so annoying. I just like the music or I don't.
The only new music that has appealed to me recently has been: Mumford & Sons, Arcade Fire, LMFAO, Lonely Island, Adele, Kate Nash, The Streets. I sometimes hear stuff that's supposedly amazing but all I can hear is the influences: I looked at the NME top albums of 2010 and I'd heard of about 5 of them, but the number one just sounded like The Fall to me. I like The Fall, and already have most of their albums, so that was a minus.
So - indie ok, utterly mainstream ok, vaguely original, poppy, tuneful, perhaps playful. Help?
I'd get some magazine's top 10 albums of 2010 but I don't even know what magazine might have taste like mine. Rolling Stone? NME?
Help!
Edit: wiki is leading me to think I quite like indie folk - I like a few big singles by some of the groups listed there, such as The Decemberists and Edward Sharpe, as well as Mumford & Sons as mentioned above.
I figure I could take a bear.
Posts
Franz Ferdinand, Super Furry Animals, Belle and Sebastian (maybe, it tends to be pretty but fairly maudlin), The Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, New Order, Reef (maybe?), Silver Sun, Skunk Anansie.
Can't use Spotify in Japan, sadly.
Anyway, here's some tunes I enjoy a lot and it's not 20 years old. I'm not going to sort them by theme or genre, but it's all pretty melodic and catchy without being J-Pop nonsense.

Those are good artists, but I've heard all of them and know which I like, thanks. I was hoping for new new music.

Rilo Kiley could be just the ticket too, although their albums swing about in quality. The lead singer has about six hundred side projects too, so you can follow any given line to its logical conclusion.

I'm trying to find something more on the LMFAO end of things, I suppose 3oh!3 fit the bill.

The Libertines are awesome too if you can ignore the media stupidity that's surrounded Pete since the second album came out.

Modest Mouse are also a great band who don't afraid of anything.

Assuming you have heard of the White Stripes (who would've been pretty hard to miss even in Japan, I'd bet), you could check out what Jack White did after:

A band I personally love and that you are just about guaranteed not to have heard of (because the furthest from Belgium they get is the european festival circuit), and that might be up your alley: The powertrio Triggerfinger

I haven't finished listening to it all though.
Don't like 3O3 though - I like silly goofy fun dance music, not 'I fuck ladeez and boyeez' stuff.

It's not pretty, however. "Running Into Mirrors" is the most pop conscious (and best, imo) track on the record.

Their style varies a bit depending on the record, but the ones that I like I really like, and they should fit your critera decently. I would especially check out the above song, 'Sugar', 'Out of Control', 'This is the End', 'Tear You Apart', 'Hazy Shade of Winter', 'All wound up'.

Yeah. Minnesota Public Radio streams, and they play lots of indie, underground hip hop, electronica. all kinds of great stuff.
