Coping With Steam: Reinterpreted Artistic Commentary on Our Shared Affliction
Most Frequently Asked Questions
1. Steam's search tool is cumbersome and not very informative. Is there a website, other than Steam's, I can go to find out what's on sale?
2. Can I register this copy of (Insert Game Here) on Steam?
Here's a list of games you can register on Steam. You can always add a non-Steam game to your Steam games list, so that people can see you playing it. You can also use this to add your own shortcuts with fake names to your Steam games list to make it look like you're playing Episode 3. Hilarious
3. If I buy a game pack that already includes a game I own, can I gift that game?
Not usually. You're welcome to ask in this thread, although if you Google it it'll probably be answered even faster.
4. Why isn't __Insert Game Here__ available in my horrible little corner of the earth?
Many Steam games might be unavailable in your country if you have the temerity to live outside of the United States. This is not Steam's fault. Regional game availability is determined solely by the publisher, who should be the source of your ire. Gifting works regardless of region so you might find some helpful person in North America who can gift you the game.
5. How do I get an invite to the Penny Arcade Steam group?
The most convenient way is to just post a link to your Steam profile page (getting one of the swank signatures described below makes it easy) and ask for an invite.
Some Words on Gifting
If you receive a game or pack via a gift or a contest,
remember to thank that person either through a PM or by announcing it in the thread. We are classy gentlemen and will act as such.
Steam's new gifting features allow you to store up games in your gift bank when you purchase them, instead of having to email yourself the gift link. It'll be an option during checkout.
An Important Word on Contests
If you decide to run or participate in a giveaway contest for gift copies of games, please remember that all entry submissions must now be made via PM. The forum mods have stated that pages of the thread being filled with pictures, videos, etc. submitted as contest entries will lead to such contests being banned. So please, for the sake of the thread – take it to PMs.

Steam Price Guide
Do you have the misfortune to live somewhere other than America? Steam hates you! Luckily,
this cool website with prices for Steam games all around the world is here to help, so you can know if you want to ask an American friend to buy the game for you or not.
AUSTRALIANS!!!!
You need this program.
It reconfigures your Windows IPSEC settings (run it as an admin) to block out all but the servers which don't count towards your download quota on Steam. Now supports a bunch of ISPs through a graphical interface.
Basically guarantees you won't add to your download quota with Steam.

Download TCPview:
TCPView
Then, use TCPview to close all Steam TCP servers (this is important, NOT the UDP ones, just the TCP ones). Steam will then reconnect to a different server, which will hopefully get you a better speed. If you don't go faster in a couple of seconds, retry until you get a speed you like.
This shit totally needs to go into the OP, I've tipped this to so many people already.

Steam Signatures
With such a cool service, someone must have done some extra things to build on it. The forums have one such man, who made some super cool Steam signatures.
Suds is his name and killing is his game. Except for the killing. The signatures automatically use backgrounds for the games and the correct icon. Pretty neat, and they're 100% free!

Steam Calculator
You can also use a script on
his Steam Calculator page to see how much your Steam account would be worth if you had taken advantage of some obscure, arcane combination of special deals that nobody could ever have taken advantage of. Or something sort of like that.
Steam Roulette
Having trouble picking a game out of your burgeoning [strike]backlog[/strike] gamebank to play? Let VicWhiten's
Steam Roulette decide! Just type in your Steam community ID (easier if you set up a custom URL on your Steam profile page), and Steam Roulette will read your library and randomly pick one game every time you hit "Spin the Wheel!" It even connects to Steam to allow you to install or start the game with a single click.

I picked up space siege and have played a bit more into it, until the first cybernetic upgrade. Game is pretty decent so far. Good pick up for cheapo, but I guess the time has come for a new daily deal, so its kinda pointless to talk about it. Its definitely not worth full price.
CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
I suggest trying out Witcher 2, it's quite a different game from the first one I think (didn't play The Witcher for more than an hour maybe, couldn't stand it either). They actually hired an English writer this time (and the story/dialogues are really rather good) and I thought it it felt very much like a Bioware game.
Here is a list of the platformers that I have. Most of them are 2D, which is what I assume you're going for.
A.R.E.S.
Aquaria
Blade Kitten
Blocks that Matter
Blueberry Garden
Braid
Capsized
Cloning Clyde
Commander Keen
MDK/MDK2, maybe? It's not a 2D one, but it's 3D. Psychonauts as well if you're going into 3D ones.
NyxQuest
Oddworld
Rocket Knight
Serious Sam Double D
Super Meat Boy (you did ask if there were others, that were not just Trine.... ) VVVVVVVV counts too (yeah, I know you did some Let's Plays. Figured I'd go for completeness though)
Terraria, I guess..?
Toki Tori
Tommy Tronic
How's that.
There's also one based on Half-Life and one of Halo that are free to download on the internets. I don't remember what they're called, but I'm sure you can Google them and get them.
I haven't tested it, but I think anyone can post in the broken threads. You just can't see it.
Re: Fallout2
If you don't start out as a melee character, in the Cave of Trials, when you're talking with the guy, you can ask him over and over "why do I have to fight?" or something, I forget what the actual line is, and he'll eventually relent and allow you to not do it. It takes a while, and it's almost easier to just suffer through the combat if you're pressed for time. But you can skip all that stupid combat and get right to the Power Suit.
Edit- 33% off their entire THQ catalog as well, excluding Space Marine and Saints Row 3.
CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
Metro 2033 for today.
At a guess - Red Faction, STALKER, Titan Quest, COH will go on special sale for the rest of the week.
Hopefully they do a Supcom 1 sale though. It's 50% off, wouldn't mind getting it cheaper. If not, time to complete my TA/Supcom collection!
Also:
Short of a deal on Dow2 Retribution that's better than the last few ones, I don't think there are any THQ games I'd be interested in getting.

You could pretty much say the exact same thing about everything that's ever been on sale anywhere.
And I think I may have sprained something when I jumped at buying it at that price.

God I hope Titan Quest is a daily. Have been in the mood for a dungeon/loot crawl for a while and been a while since one has been on sale.

I believe this was eaten by the buggy old thread, but I completed Portal 2's co-op campaign (minus DLC) with a friend last night. GLaDOS had some really fantastic lines, but overall the "plot" was really lacking. I was also expecting it to start during a certain point of Portal 2's singleplayer campaign, but it seems to be completely isolated from it.
We totally broke the first room of the last area, too. I found out later, through this video, that this is how it's supposed to be done.
The box never did that for us despite our trying to retrieve it that way, so we assumed we were supposed to get to it later. We ended up
It's the first real "I don't think that's the way you're supposed to do it" moment I've had in a Portal game.
Also, yay, new thread.

Getting started with BATTLETECH: Part 1 / Part 2
You just know its going to go on sale too. If I waited one more weekend to play it I could have gotten some co-op going for sure, but there's always Retribution.
Would love to see Space Marine get a sale. If it drops around $30 I will be all over it. Same goes for Dawn of War Platinum if it drops around $10. I was even just thinking last night how we were due for a Steam sale since I seemed to have money. Those things tend to time out together.

God Damnit Steam. I spend my last 5 euros on Universe Sandbox, thinking that there won't be anything until Midweek Madness, and then this happens. On the plus side, I still can't afford Dawn of War II unless it has a special sale.
Another thing, after seeing that STALKER was on sale, I thought that Call of Pripyat would be too, disappointed to find that THQ didn't publish that.

Space Marine and Saints Row the Third are both excluded from the "Entire Catalog" sale. So it'd be an absolute miracle if either of them went on any kind of sizable sale. Maybe you'll get a 10 or 15% off, but I even doubt you'll see that.
From the last thread but I noticed it only after reinstalling windows 7 so it could be a new patch with either the game or windows. Its bloody hideous though and seems to get worse over time indicating a memory leak. And they say saints row 2 was badly optimised.
So I'm not holding out much hope that Saints Row The Third will get any daily discount, especially considering how that might aggravate the folks who've already preordered it at full price.
I'm also not expecting Space Marine to be a daily deal since it's still a bit too new, but then again maybe they'll throw it up for something like 15-20% off just to see how many units they can move. Of course, that would pretty much just be price-matching Amazon since Space Marine is a Steamworks game.
And yeah, at this point I'm at a loss as to what THQ games I want but don't already own.
My hopes and dreams hate you, but my wallet loves you, so that's a wash.
That's what I never understand about these sales. Wouldn't you want to put things that aren't in the pack on the daily sales? Its one thing when its a company's entire catalog, but it looks like THQ just picked games out of a hat to put in there.

Also buy Metro you apes it's incredible.
I just wanted to say that you appear to be the only other person in the world who bought Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. And that other people should do so.

it's good stuff
I wonder what else will pop up during the week to taunt me. Do we think Saints Row 2 might end up as one of the daily deals for 75% off rather than the current 33% or something? 'Cos that would definitely push me over the edge into Newell-Serving territory.
