Despite sharing the same title, this movie is not a remake of but rather a prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter film of the same name, taking place immediately prior to the events of that film. It follows a team of Norwegian and American scientists who discover an alien buried deep in the ice of Antarctica, realizing too late that it is still alive, consuming then imitating the team members.
It just came out today and me and DrIan went and saw it. We were pretty disappointed! and not just because of the abundance of bad CGI.
We also had just seen this baby last night on the big screen so it was especially fresh in our minds.
Apparently you can tell who's been infected in Carpenter's film by whether they've changed clothes or not!
Whatever, let's discuss the new movie or trade theories on the ending of of Carpenter's.
Just tell me; did it at least maintain the whole "audience doesn't know who the thing is" deal? Lots of tension, suspicion, not knowing who it is?
Or is it just a CGI splatterfest jamboree?
Yeah you don't know who's the thing but they don't really take the time to set up any of the characters apart from Winstead so you don't really feel the consequences for anybody. (granted, you get broad strokes for the characters in Carpenter's, but there are more people to keep track of here). As for the tension and suspcion, it's in there but you don't get the great sense of dread where you're constantly wondering who could be the thing and when could they have been infected. It felt a lot more random here.
If there's any significant issue with that aspect of the film, it's largely how the script goes about setting all those gruesome deaths up. One of the best aspects of Carpenter's film was how seemingly accidental many of the deaths ended up being. The creature wasn't some stalking serial killer of a monster, but rather an animal acting on some kind of defensive instinct. Any time someone was seen being attacked in the 1982 movie, it was a result of someone discovering its hidden identity, and responding violently. Here, the monster stalks, and stalks, and stalks, constantly hunting everyone down like a slasher film bad guy. It seems less bent on survival than just killing everyone in sight.
That results in a few too many weak jump scares for comfort, often resulting in a break up of an otherwise dread-filled scene. The Thing had maybe two or three real jump scares to speak of, and they came out of nowhere. Here, they're predictable, and rarely anything more than a big loud noise meant to startle the character and, by proxy, the audience. It's cheap shit, and sacrifices too much of the dreadful atmosphere.
Man
It sucks that this sucks, but it sucks even more that it exemplifies everything wrong with modern horror
And going into this movie knowing Carpenter's made it worse in some cases.

So we know that two people survive the Norwegian camp, and that one of them speaks Norwegian and doesn't understand English. Do you know how many Norwegians in the camp know both English and Norweigan? ALL OF THEM BUT ONE! And that guy is gone for half the movie only to appear right at the end.
The other guy, the one who flies the helicopter is a guy WHO FLIES IN AT THE END OF THE MOVIE, HAVING NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE. It isn't Joel Edgerton, or Mr Eko (can't remember the guy's name), WHO ARE BOTH HELICOPTER PILOTS. On the one hand, having a guy just appear at the end is terrible, but then again I can see the writer putting it in to throw off people who are going through the movie knowing what to expect based on Carpenter's film. Still, fuck that.

Tell me more QuestionMarkMan! Does all the established chaos in the base happen, at least?
Off the top of my head;
a nasty looking circular hole in the corridor outside the ice block room - I always figured from a tentacle or something.
And one guy slashed his wrists and his throat before freezing to death.
...also, the interior of the base ends up frozen. There a good reason for that?
The movie takes place at a Norwegian camp and most of the people there alternate between speaking Norwegian and English.
Don't know about the hole.
Slashed wrists guy is in there.
Well, the base gets destroyed and it's during a snowstorm, but the timing of it is weird. Russell visits the base the same day the Norwegians come to them in their helicopter, and the base was pretty much destroyed the day before I think.
And you also get explanations for the axe in the door and the thing creature with the two heads morphing into each other.

Didn't even know they were doing a remake. Too bad it sounds like it sucks
:^:
So I did not!
The original was so good. The effects were good times.
Also I saw 50/50 last night and I really liked it
movie phalla sounds good
I have secret dreams of running a dr. who phalla, but I'm not really experienced enough to make it happen.
It would be good though! Village is Cybermen, mafia is the doctor and friends, etc.
saxton hale is an unaligned vig
but a Thing phalla would be great too
also now that I think about it, a Dark Souls phalla would be cool
It' s a prequel
That's the title of my memoirs.
