I doubt anyone says that anymore. Actually outside of the some small circles in the US that wasn't said in the 1970's. Also bailouts were less than a trillion but that is me being a stickler.

Also curious where your numbers are from. Do they include UN and NGOS? World Bank and the IMF included?(Yes they are assholes but still money somewhere) Is it adjusted for inflation? What is the exact total? And what parts of aid are they counting? Does aid to Egypt count in this or not?

It's aid money given through DAC I do believe.

NGOs are not included in this, it's about governments giving the money through.. whatever channel they use.

So you are ignoring individual aid groups countries have and UNDP? UNICEF as well is aid money not through DAC. This seems very limited view on things here. Now don't get me wrong, I think countries who are able to afford it should give more. But a some of those OECD countries have billions if not trillions of dollars worth of need in their own countries as well. This is excluding political implications and working through democratic governments. Throw in how the aid is distributed, corruption in receiving countries and what the aid gets earmarked for.

Sucks when its super complicated huh?

Also, the BNP is not like the Tea Party, except for maybe some shared racism. The BNP are much smaller, have no backing from anyone of note, and are ridiculed in every news outlet as clueless thugs and racists. They certainly have no political power to speak of beyond a few local council seats.

There was a sci-fi story I read when I was a kid, about a kid who goes to visit his aunt on another planet, but instead of actually traveling they they just transfer his consciousness electronically, put it on a chip, and implant the chip in a cloned body. He later discovers that his aunt has been cloned and some bad person is holding her real body hostage or something.

I recognize this story but I can not fucking place it.

Yeah, I've never been able to remember what it was either.

Is it still the case that the U.S. gives more in pure dollars than the rest of the world combined, but since it's a smaller percentage of our GDP, everyone cries that we're heartless monsters?

    Not combined.

You give more than like the next 3 countries in line behind.

Basically it's the US giving 0.2% of its GNI (or something) then the UK giving about 0.65% of its GNI then a bunch of other countries.

I would say maybe. This isn't a should but more a could they question. How much of that GNI is not going to private corporations, families and non-governmental bodies? How much is going the government in taxation? Aid isn't just hey lets give x% of our GNI to a country. And how and where it gets distributed is a whole mess.

Basically I am say it isn't that simple of an issue.

It wasn't supposed to be a "if you die we make a new body for you" kind of thing though, if I remember right that's just how people went on vacation over long distances. If the "real" body died, I think the clone would die too, that's why it was such a big deal that the aunt had been cloned.
