The spiritual sequel to Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander, was released this week. I think it deserves a thread and I really don't feel like talking to people in G&T.
An RTS game on a massive scale, Supreme Commander features three different races that start off with nearly identical units in the early tech tiers and then diversify higher up. There are land, sea and air units for each race.
I haven't played much of it yet, but common knowledge is that armies can get
huge. A big part of this game is resource management. If you've played Total Annihilation you'll be familiar with the Mass (Metal) Extractors and Energy (Energy) Generators. It's a pretty good and fairly logical system. To power bigger things you need a whole lotta energy coming in. To build things you need mass with which to build them. And since, from what I've seen, you can't really run out of resources, you can build a fuckton of dudes.
Unit control has been improved from just about any RTS I've played. Units can be grouped in many different configurations and ordered to patrol, attack, guard, assist (in the case of support units), even attack simultaneously with another group of units moving from a different map location. Group a transport aircraft with your attack force and it'll ferry your team to the assembly point, starting with the slowest moving units.
It's a cool game, but my own personal feelings on it are still kind of mixed. It's very deep and smart in the way it handles unit control, but the goddamn units are so tiny that you have to constantly zoom in and out just so you know what dudes you're selecting.
People have raved about the ability to split control between two monitors, one zoomed in and one zoomed out, but it seems at though you might
need to use this method to keep a good handle on everything.
Let's talk about RTS games.

Never played but heard of TA. It looks good even though I don't play RTS's much.

Though I will always love TBS games a litle bit more. Jagged Alliance, X-Com, Master of Magic, etc etc. Those never get old.
pussy
I never made it that far, I always lost before I even got to make hovertanks, or even a second base.
It's like Sim City, I just suck at it and always lose.
It's really neat though.
Shit.
Yeah the UI is kind of large. I didn't think they needed to use quite that much room to display all of the queued units at the same time.
I do like the way you can drag around waypoints. Oh, and queuing units up while a factory is still building.
it's not worth it
this
So what i'm saying is, where are the cheat codes?
your = belonging to you
their = belonging to them
there = not here
they're = they are
Are you saying that your brother is a nazi?
Way to Godwin this thread, man!
okay everyone, pack it up... we're goin' home.
Actually it is, I'm currently using a 1.7 and if I want to play anything snazzy I have to steal my girlfriends computer.
It wouldn't be so bad if the Shermans were a little more durable, but they die in like two panzerfaust shots.
a sherman shouldnt be rolling through infantry, and if you do find yourself about to get zerged with panzerfaust pop a smoke screen
Errr... How to make smoekscrn?
Aslo I wasn't rolling through infantry, I was attacking one of his bunkers and the moved in behind me through the fog of war.
If you're going to build a new computer just for this game, I would recommend two video cards for the dual screen feature.
Not that I would recommend building a new computer for any game.
Who wants to play? I'll be an easy win I'm sure.
