The other day I slammed my left index finger in the bathroom door. Within an hour or so the whole nail was purple, the finger was a bit swollen, and it hurt like the dickens. The nail is definitely going to come off, as it looks the same as my right ring finger last year after a particularly brutal fencing bout.
However, it hurts like a motherfucker right now and is really super tender. Somebody suggested driving a white-hot pin through the nail to let the pressure out, but I don't think I have it in me to pull that one off. Any suggestions on what I can do to make the hurting stop, short of drilling into my nail or just waiting for the new nail growing in to pop the old one off?
In highschool my buddy dropped a piece of wood on his hand and that happened. He just sucked it up, the swelling went down eventually and the nail fell off revealing a nice new nail underneath.
I wouldn't go with the white hot poker idea. Let your body do it's thing. It knows what it's doing.
Often the physician will pierce the nail to relieve the pressure. The physician might use a red-hot paper clip, an 18-gauge needle, or an electrocautery machine. While the procedure sounds gruesome (and looks dramatic when the blood starts to spurt from the hole), most children feel great relief and no discomfort. The hot tool glides through the nail like butter.
Pasted from the first google result. The idea is to drill through the nail, to the pocket of blood under the nail. I imagine you have to be careful not to drill in to the actual nail bed, as that would probably hurt.
*sigh* Guess I'm out of luck. I was hoping for a quick and easy folk remedy. Lock her up, nothing more to see here.
For this kind of thing a hot paperclip through the nail is about as simple and folksy as you get unfortunatly. If you don't want to do that, just keep it iced. 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off all day.
When someone crushed my finger with a hammer, i was too afraid to try the hot paper clip. After about 30 minutes , i decided it couldn't hurt anymore so gave it a shot. At this point though, the blood had already dried under the nail so it wouldn't come out through the hole i made and relieve the pressure. My point being, it might too late to even consider this an option.
it'll grow out, and like the dude before me said, the blood is probably dry by now, that happens pretty fast. The pain will fade soon, and you'll have something to frighten small children with for a few months, but it'll grow out. Happened to my middle toe last year, I kicked the hell out of it on a rock. Its more annoying for you because fingers are used more, but the pain will fade soon enough. Stick with keeping a bandaid on it to remind you not to use it too much, and maybe a couple of ibuprofen.
