    Topical!

  • HorseshoeHorseshoe Registered User regular
topical in that way of being so entirely by accident

which come to think of is often how those things go with dc comics

    so

    good job everybody!

I have always seen Captain Atom as a bit of a deconstructed representation

What he represents is of course the terrifying American WMD power during the Cold War.

The deconstruction comes from his own introspective ways, and how he feels like he has become seperated from everything else as a result of his power. Perhaps a metaphor for American being on an economic pedestal compare to the rest of the world? Except Cap is more self-aware maybe? and thus explores these themes.

I like to think about Superheroes in these ways, since for me one of the big draws of the genre is that it takes debates and questions from our lives, then expands them massively into fights between brightly coloured and powerful heroes and villains, providing a unique insight into these issues.

There's a paragraph just like that in my dissertation!

something about dc comic book characters has always seemed very subconscious to me

for example captain atom is absolutely what you say

but i don't think his creator in the 60's actually sat down and thought

"i'm going to make a character that represents how dang scary nuclear rockets are but gives us a way to humanize this fear and understand it through the transformative medium of comics"

after 20 more years of tense nuclear standoffs alan moore comes along and he actually does think

"you know what i'm going to write a captain atom that is overtly the militant cold war threat that the character personifies... and i will make him aware of that"

this made doctor manhattan an incredible character and it also made captain atom a better character

it gave we the readers something that resonated strongly, encouraged interpretation, and asked us to search for meaning in our funnybooks

basically i think the former is how DC comic superheroes tend to be by default

characters that go about their brightly colored costumed heroics while being incredibly charged with the power of the collective unconscious

but since the emergence of the "graphic novel" in the 80's and the advent of comics being taken a bit more for serious

we have had writers who actually have things like deconstruction in mind when they work with these same characters

which i think is pretty dang cool

    dmsigsmallek3.jpg
  • SolarSolar Registered User regular
Yeah me too, and I agree that it mostly seems like subconscious influences

Which is pretty cool, and means that comics can tell us a lot about the period in which they were written, I think

  • HorseshoeHorseshoe Registered User regular
unfortunately it also means alan moore is going to be a dick about it and say that comics sucked before him and that since him the comic industry has done nothing but leech on his ideas

    dmsigsmallek3.jpg
  • SolarSolar Registered User regular
Well Alan Moore is a comics genius

But he is kind of a dick about that whole thing, yeah

  • HorseshoeHorseshoe Registered User regular
the price we have to pay for things as incredibly good as swamp thing and watchmen is getting flipped off forever by the guy who wrote them

    dmsigsmallek3.jpg
  • SolarSolar Registered User regular
well unless he is going to hurl himself through my front room window and tear comics out of my hands as I read them

Him flipping off the industry doesn't really bother me

Besides, as much as I don't agree with some of his criticisms, it's nice to see somebody giving the industry shit for a change

A lot of the time, comics "journalism" is just extended advertisement for comic companies

  • SakutianSakutian Registered User regular
I've always found the exploration of mankind's duality which is a subject that has been explored by countless comics to be of great interest. But that is just me.

oh heck yes there's lots of that

also solar i do like how alan moore hits the comics industry with a vicious burn now and then too

    (especially when he is correct)

it's just kinda tough to be a fan of his sometimes

    dmsigsmallek3.jpg
  • SolarSolar Registered User regular
It is, though it has to be said that Alan Moore is actually known to be quite pleasant to fans of his books when he meets them

He just doesn't like the way the industry uses them or fucked him over

I think I read an article where he said that if people do enjoy his work, then that's all he could hope for and he's glad that they do so.

Also he bought a load of Christmas hampers with his own money and walked around his home town, giving them to homeless people. That seems like a nice thing to do.

Add that to the vicious burn thing and generally speaking I like Alan Moore

You know I had the chance to meet David Finch once and have him review my portfolio. A nicer guy you could never hope to meet. He is really down to earth and likable. I enjoy his artwork quite a bit too so it was a big nerdy moment of joy to sit across a table from him one on one.

Just thought I'd bring that up since you guys were discussing people in the indsutry.

Because you went outside yesterday and it was beautiful and then you found a dead thing.

If you were down south (east) you'd go outside, it would smell a little "off" and then you'd fry up that dead animal. I kid. But only a little.

the BIG upside is that i am not sick as hell because that is the water that supplies my dang house

i have no idea how a calf climbed up on top of the cover and fell through the board

going to have to rent a pump from one of the equipment places tomorrow

    then shovel out the bottom

    yech

i guess another upside is that we're finally going to get a modern well drilled and plumbed for my house

so that i won't be living of this backwoods 1850's water supply anymore

Oh and Justice Leage Doom wasn't very good. I did enjoy the nod to the DC relaunch by including Cyborg in the roster though.
