As someone who never played Birth by Sleep, I don't understand any of that spoiler text :P
I really need to go back and play it sometime... Which means getting the PS4 collection (the first chance I've ever had as I didn't own a PSP or PS4). Which would require me to have time to play more games
KHUX plot update time again. This time, we get to the end of the Cinderella movie story. Lady Tremaine is quick enough on the uptake to realize maybe Cinderella is the mysterious blonde girl who looked exactly like Cinderella from the Ball. So she locks Cinderella in her room and starts showing huge signs of losing her Heart to the Darkness. Sure enough, when you head up there, she has manifested a Heartless version of herself and her daughters that's going to totally murder Cindy. This boss fight is tougher than the last couple because it's a rare chapter ending boss that's multiple serious foes at once. All three enemies have the "get to attack on your turn once you've hit them enough" mechanic going on. One of the henchgirls hits you while the other heals all three enemies, and the Tremaine Heartless hits you multiple times (she traps you in a cage... get it?) and does some pretty bad status effects. Amusingly, this follows the pattern of the Werewolf attack where it's something just stapled on to the plot and none of the characters notice or really care for the most part. Once you show up to save Cindy, she runs past you and ditches you in the room with the thing. Once you kill it, you walk back out and see the ending of the movie. Next time... some actual plot that isn't just regurgitating a Disney movie? WHO KNOWS.
So there was a shorter story update (only 5 levels compared to the normal 15 to 20 we normally get) that had a bit of a bombshell in it. There's a flashback to the scenes with The Master from Back Cover where he instructs Ava to create the Dandelions. He says that 5 of the Dandelions will recreate the Unions AFTER the Keyblade war AND one of them will get their own Book of Prophecy.
Then we flash forward past the war to the Keyblade Graveyard. In what I can only call a MASSIVELY insensitive move, those five Dandelions are meeting there to get things going again. We of course know that Ephemer and Skuld are the first two of the five. Then the third shows up. It's Ventus, pre-BBS.
3D's time travel rules would still have the issue of Ven apparently being older than a man who, at the time of BBS, was afraid of dying of old age before his plans could be completed.
Maybe if there's a magic time door like Merlin can make. Or if Ven here is a prophecy-made copy, like the various Disney worlds are in Chi.
A not-so-secret organization of keyblade wielders.
In the time before the War, the six remaining apprentices of a man called the Master of Masters each set up a coalition of keyblade wielders under their own banners, to collectively keep the peace. One of their rules was that fighters from diffeeent coalitions shouldn't fraternize or organize.
So of course, one of the leaders broke the rules.
It turns out the Master left her with a secret mission, to form a seventh, secret group, out of keyblade wielded feom the other coalitions, in order to form friendships across the coalitions, and possibly prevent the groups from completely collapsing once the War began.
She calls this group of children the Dandelions to evoke the idea of seeds being scattered to ensure the future.

There's this backstory in KH (I believe it's referenced in 1 and explicitly stated in BBS) that the world was lost in darkness but there was light in the hearts of children that brought it back. The cell phone game is actually telling the backstory that that fairytale is based on. The children who kept everything from going into darkness are the Dandelions.

Now that he's summed up the series main plot, the same creator has now summed up BBS for people who ended up confused by that plot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpVbB2L74lc
(I love these)
KHUX story update time, kind of a big cool one this time. But first, the rest of the Just a Pancake parody videos. My previous post was BBS, in the spoiler are KH1, CoM, 358/2 Days, and 2 in that order. Enjoy.
A couple of updates I didn't bother to detail involved our hero getting involved in day to day Heartless hunt missions. There's teams of other wielders doing these with you, and in one of them they complain intel was bad and you can see they have poorly chosen keys for the boss fight, which was a nice touch. In between the various hunts, we flash back to the post-war meeting in the Keyblade Graveyard. The 5 new Union members picked from the Dandelions have been arriving one by one. First Ephemer, then Skuld, then Ventus (!!), and now... Brain? It's uh... an odd name. He's a weird fedora wearing type who seems pretty sketchy, but doesn't do anything obviously bad in this first meeting. Well... except he IMMEDIATELY suggests breaking the rules they were given by Master Ava, which sounds bad... but then again, doing what they were told allowed a massive war to happen. I'm not so sure anyone has these guys' best interests at heart here, so actually going off book might be the best idea. The others disagree after some hesitation, so Brain relents. It is reestablished in this scene that the new Union members will have their memories of the whole war and everything that led up to it erased so that they won't be upset? depressed? whatever? about all the death and mayhem. It is pointed out by the group that if they forget the war, they won't have any wisdom gained from it to say... avoid another war or anything like that, but the Union leaders will remember, so they dismiss that concern.
At the end of these hunts, you have a dream of lying in the Keyblade Graveyard, apparently fatally wounded? !Kyubey shows up and hugs you, then a sort of heavenly light appears and Ephemer walks out of it. He says he's here to "fulfill the promise". It is entirely unclear what this means. The dream ends and you head for the Square where two wielders from different Unions are in a heated argument. It goes so far that they draw on each other and attack, but our hero rushes in and blocks them both from hitting each other. He argues (we've been talking more and more in the story now, I like it) that Keyblade wielders should never fight each other, only the Darkness and monsters. They argue back that anyone who steals the Light from them is a traitor and therefore an agent of the baddies. More wielders show up and claim the Keyblade War has actually started and Unions are openly fighting now! Skuld shows up and argues the hero's side, but then things take a turn. Master Aced (the Bear Union) shows up and outs Skuld as a Dandelion to the wielders who have assembled to watch the fight and argue. He says that she's a hypocrite who just wants to make the Dandelion secret Union the strongest one, which stymies her calls for a clearer head until our hero steps forward and says that he's NOT a Dandelion and also feels the fighting has to stop. Aced asks what Union you're in (not his) and then immediately draws and duels you. The Master Keyblade duels continue to be my favorite boss fights. But just like the other two, they hold back a bit storywise. In this case, when the duel ends, you wake up in your room and !Kyubey says you were just sleeping for a few hours. So the war hasn't started and a Union leader didn't just try to kill you... yet? Another dream? A premonition? Shit is... getting worse all the time.

2018? Seems awfully ambitious. I think I'll believe it when the game is in my PS4, and the theme song is playing with the intro, maybe. Or maybe not until I'm playing the tutorial stage.

Word is SE will have an actual mm/dd/yyyy date (or yyyy/mm/dd) at E3 this year.
I picked Birth by Sleep back up again in light of all this
I'm on V of my TVA playthrough
I still think this game is not great! I enjoy the bite sized length of the worlds and the fact that there's no gummi ship but everything about commands, command melding, and the command deck just strikes me as the most unnecessary shit, and the jumping is so floaty and bad

I super loved the command deck, and I loved leveling them up and merging them and upgrading them and sometimes randomly getting a surprise better thing. That whole system just grokked with me.
From the previews of KH3, it's going to be a synthesis of BBS and DDD combat systems, so that's the direction the series is going in.
Monsters Inc. is a good replacement to Nightmare Before Christmas and thematically fits Kingdom Hearts very well. Getting power from screams = darkness, getting power from laughter = light. Oh and the bad guys can kidnap Boo to give you something to do there AND Darkness powered up Randall would be a great boss battle if they go there. And a battle taking place in the door room would actually be so good I kind of worry they won't do it.
I didn't post any KHUX story times while this thread was dead, didn't want to just post by myself in here a bunch of times. But there's been some happenings. As a reminder, pre-Keyblade War, there's 5 Unions set up by the Master to perform various tasks. One of those tasks is to establish the Dandelions, a group of Keybladers who WON'T get into the upcoming Keyblade War NO MATTER WHAT. After the Keyblade war, the Dandelions are set to recreate habitable worlds and re-establish 5 new Unions. Each Dandelion Union has a leader picked out and the leader gets a book of laws from the Dandelion founder, Master Ava. There's Ephemer, Skuld, Ventus (!), and Brain.
In the new update, we finally meet the 5th Dandelion Union leader. It's Strelitzia. She's a girl with long red hair who it turns out, is an admirer from afar of the Player Character. She noticed you during the arc where you became close buds with Ephemer and then was actually present for a bunch of the story scenes since then, just out of the camera's focus. Basically, she's Stitch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87bEIrhaaSc
When she realizes that the PC is NOT a Dandelion, she knows that means you will be dead meat when the war gets going and decides to A) finally introduce herself to you and get you to join the Dandelions so you won't get killed in the Keyblade War. She goes to find the PC as you go on yet another Heartless hunt. However, she's ambushed and killed (!!!) in an abandoned warehouse where her !Kyubey suggested the PC might be. Her Book of Law is stolen as she lies dying. Then we flash forward to the meeting of the 5 Dandelion Union leaders. The 5th is Lauriam, aka the human form of Marluxia.
So... either Brain or Lauriam or even Ventus (?!) is a murdering imposter set to ruin the Dandelions right as they get started. The future plot is completely SNAFU.
An E3 release date would likely indicate a holiday date. I was hoping it'd be sooner.
Back half of the year would be so perfectly ideal for me.
The front half of the year is so jam packed with games I don't see a single day that I won't be playing a new release until at least summer. And if DQ11 is a summer release as it might be then not until AFTER summer. This year is so god damn insane.
I'm avoiding watching the new song video because I want to hear it when I first pop this sucker into in and watch the opening video. Re-live those teenage me memories.
Also Monsters Inc is awesome.

All this talk about whether or not the Monster Inc world is a waste of a slot and I think we're missing the big picture.
Navigating it sucked in KH1, and making it a bunch of minigames in 2 was the right idea, it's just that the songs sucked and the rhythm gameplay was too bland
