so one of the instructors at my school is out for what is probably the rest of the year because he's going into chemo treatments because apparently the dude has leukemia
which, you know, kinda blows
but he's in one of the best cities in the world for treatment and has a great specialist and they caught it early
now, he's a filmmaker by trade, and is very very into cinematic experiences and storytelling, and doesn't have a huge gaming background. I actually went to his office when I found out to give my condolences and see what I could do to help. He asked for a list of games to play while he's laid up for the next whole lot of months feeling awful. He likes strategy games and loved Myst (if that tells you anything about how out of date he is) and he said he enjoyed... that one game, the shooty one where you're a soldier in a war. After balking at him - the guy is one of the heads of the art department at a premiere gaming school and he referred to it as "that one game where you're a soldier in a war" - I sussed out that he meant one of the recent Call of Duty games)
I'm doing him one better and getting a bunch of students to donate games. Personally I'm giving him Red Dead Redemption and Bioshock to show him how cinematic games have become, along with AoE3 and Civ4, Company of Heroes and Orange Box for 360. He's got a decent laptop and access to any console imaginable. Another student donated Psychonauts, Sly Cooper and Viewtiful Joe.
What other games should I get in front of him? This is the perfect opportunity to really educate a guy on the state of the medium and the potential of games as storytelling devices that is directly in charge of planning curriculum for a university dedicated to teaching games.
Things to keep in mind - he can only see out of one eye, which doesn't really limit much in a feaux-3d medium, but he's out of practice and doesn't have great hand-eye coordination. Plus he's going to be feeling sick as fuck, so games that initialize vertigo are bad. Also, he doesn't currently have a steam account, although we may get him one and just donate through that.
I want to find a copy of ME1 and/or 2 and some of the Telltale adventure games, but I'd love to hear some suggestions. If you guys want to donate, let me know and maybe I can get a steam account going for him.
Posts
also, thank god, i thought this was gonna be about you
e: condolences to him and his, obviously, but i had a real moment of panic and now i look like a dick
maybe SotC might be too close to that vertigo clause, but cinematic as hell.
Steam Switch FC: 2799-7909-4852
You know, if he can sit through the lengthy and frequent cinematics.
hence RDR
it is one hundred percent up his alley
I don't think the dude would be much into jrpgs, to be honest
Not RDR.
That was a fun game.
it's a goddamn perfect game for this sort of thing
and civ, well, fuck, if there's one game to make you lose track of time and forget how shitty you feel, it's the goddamn civilizations series
This may not be a great suggestion and admittedly I haven't even got very far in it, but maybe Amnesia for a bit of horror done well in games?
Braid
Deus Ex
L.A. Noire I guess
Assassin's Creed
Alan Wake
That's all I can really come up with at this moment in time
Also yeah I thought this was about you Rank, I was scared.
I had a series of minor heart attacks when i saw the title, rank
don't do that to me
gimme a week and a knife
Heavy Rain
LA Noire
Beyond Good and Evil
Shadow Complex
Silent Hill 2 (good for slow reflexes)
Fallout 3: New Vegas
Dark Souls
Neat Storytelling:
The Last Express (very myst-like, he'll love it)
Blue Lacuna
King of the Dragon Pass
...others. most of what i got right now is text adventures
er, is he a console player? WHAT SETUP FOR GAME PLAYING DOES HE HAVE? HAHA, READING!
nothin' like being batman to make you fight off cancer
that game is just fucking awesome.
holla'
yes yes
maybe asylum wouldn't? Certainly less swooping around such.
http://www.audioentropy.com/
plus, twin peaks references
It gives my stomach the heaves after a while
He'll probably dig Snake Eater
Machinarium and Amnesia would be nice I think. Depending on if he's not a pussy like me when it comes to Amnesia.
Mass Effect 1 and 2 for all the choices, consequences and story. The Uncharted games would be nice. I'd recommend Braid, too.
And it looks like he might get a kick out of the Modern Warfare games.
edit:
Maybe the Dragon Age games, too.
busy for months
but really, if he gets a steam account I'd donate somethin
If you want to give him a strategy get frozen synpase.
Last time I saw they were having a two for one sale as well.
Satans..... hints.....
I mean the story and the set pieces (when they had them) were so good.
But trudging through the forest killing countless numbers of axe men ended up being so tiring, I'd be all, get on with the story already.
Satans..... hints.....
Just try not to get caught up on item collecting the first time you play it. I mean what exactly do you get for them? Fucking achievements is all.
heck, near the end of the game I had no ammo so I had no choice but to run from some groups of enemies
EDIT: dammit I did not realize other people had suggested it as well. poo.
There are many games that rely heavily on cutscenes to forward stories, which is fair enough, but that is relying on existing cinematic and filmmaking know-how. I would imagine you want games that utilize not (just) cutscenes to forward the story, but where the story advances are embedded in the gameplay itself.
it took me several iterations of the civ games to come to this conclusion, which is unfortunate
but they are just not for me
