@cardboard delusions mate I'd be very hesitant to just go and buy a new monitor because you're getting screen tearing in a couple of games. Unless somehow you know it's the monitor (I would be surprised if it is) I would be looking towards the software side of things. Have a look at the game dev's site for info on patches and recommended fixes for the screen tearing. Check AMD's site for info on app profiles and drivers, because I know for a fact that there has been known issues with AMD cards and screen tearing in The Witcher
Moral of story: Don't rush out and drop bulk cash on a new screen unless you know for sure the screen is, in fact, the issue
I want to get a new monitor to go up resolution and get a little more size, I'm between these two: samsung vs asus
I want to get the Asus to save the money I'm just scared that the quality isn't there. I have a Samsung now and another at home, I'd sell it because I'd love for it to have a new home. Also, anyone have any issues running off HDMI since the Samsung doesn't have DVI.
Pulled the trigger on Samsung, NewEgg should ship around tomorrow

Yet another build plan, now that I'm getting to the point where I might be able to afford it. (Is it just me or are these builds getting more expensive as I go?)
Hope I didn't miss anything. Also, two more queries if they'll fit here:
1. Any mixmasters in the house (no pun intended) know where I can pick up a synthesizer for one of the 5.25" bays? We've got an 88-key Casio that I'm desperate to make the most out of.
2. I've got an adapter to plug in the IDE hard disk from my old old desktop. Since it won't let me access My Documents, how can I get it to let me in (or at the least ask me for a name and password)?

You could save a bunch on the PSU. Corsair, XFX, and Antec all have PSUs in that range for $15-20 less which would do the job just as well. Seems a bit much for a 550W PSU. Also, I would try to shell out for a 560 or 560Ti if you can swing it. Downgrading to 8GB of RAM would help, I don't know your specific circumstances but most people don't need 16GB (for that matter, most don't use 8 GB even if they have it). This is what I normally recommend, but whatever is decent quality and cheap works.
I love the G500. I own two. I also dig the keyboard, interesting layout, fitting a standard keyboard into a tenkeyless size. I just upgraded to a mechanical, it's definitely a good choice.
The M4 is an excellent drive, good combination of price, reliability, and performance. Everything else just seems like a good choice, no explanation needed.
I'm a little confused about your hard drive issue: are you seeing it in Windows when you plug it in using the adapter?

@Ianator Solid build, but I would question the 550Ti. Considering the price of the rest of the build it seems like such a shame to put a relatively underpowered card in there. The regular p8p67 runs it's second PCIe 2.0 x16 slot (the ones for the GPUs) at x4, which will have a noticeable effect on any attempts to xfire later on, if you're so inclined.
A 1GB 6870 like This Asus one would serve you better. It's more expensive, but if you cut that RAM down to 2x4GB sticks you'll be laughing. Honestly, you will see more of a performance increase with the better GPU than with the extra RAM, assuming we're talking mainly gaming here.
The other option is if you can hold off for another couple of months, we'll see most the new cards being released hitting the market
Hm, what's the expected price range on that? I'm not looking to spend a whollllle lot.
I linked some info on the previous page, but at a rough estimate I would say $450-$400 for the 7950.
Assuming you're gaming at 1920x1080 or less, than I like This 6950 for bang-for-your-buck performance
I'm using two 1080p monitors. I'm just trying to get to the region where I can comfortably run things at awesome specs. Sometimes I have to run things at slightly less than full blown awesome.

Video Card: Guess I picked the 550 because they were all about $100 less than the 560s. Switched over to that ASUS since the EVGAs started at ~$220.
RAM: I intend to do a bit of media work, which is why I'm looking to get so much RAM in there. But yeah, I'll downgrade to 8GB, if only to have room to boost it later.
Keyboard: Thanks for the tips, @Pariel. I kinda just picked the most entry-level-looking mechanical I could find.
My old hard drive: I can plug it in and read it just fine, but it denies me access to My Documents (which is what I'm digging around in there for in the first place).

at 1080p a 6950 is a killer card. You probably won't be able to play metro 2033 on ultra settings but most everything else should be fine maxed with a bit of anti aliasing thrown in.

Well that becomes considerably harder if you can only spend around $250
Also, while I'm being a negative nelly, Ianator I don't really like that keyboard you picked. It uses the MY switches, which aren't as nice as the MX switches. My recommendation to you is do a bit more research as to how the different swtich types work before you jump into a mechanical keyboard. There's a shitload of types out there and there's no way we can tell you what you like.

I didn't notice the $15 promo card (pretty sure I though it was the rebate first time around), which makes it considerably better. Should work out to $51 in the end. Personally, I don't like MIRs, the man hours to send them in and times they don't result in cash make me leery. There's also the 550W version, which is $55 after MIR and comes with a $20 promo card. That's one heck of a deal (although it's not modular). None of the other ones I mentioned are modular, so if that's a key consideration then they're out.
Also, speaking of really good PSU deals: CX430 for $17 after MIR. Really good for a non-gaming system at that price.

Geekhack is definitely the best place to go. I don't think I'd characterize the MY switches as worse than MX. They're linear switches which actuate at 60cN (same as MX Blacks), but don't bottom out until 120cN (50% higher than MX blacks).
It can't hurt to do some research. Most people seem to start with Reds (linear, considered better for gaming) or Browns (tactile, in other words, there's a bump when it actuates).

My budget is actually more in around the 300 but it didn't seem like I got much more bang for 50 bucks.
Edit: Would I be better off Crossfiring another 6850?
Chaos, probably but it depends on what your mobo and PSU are. In terms of cost-effectiveness it's probably the best solution (I'm talking about xfire here)
Hmmm, ok well the first thing that I can think of is try and sell off your 6850, use the $300 you had set aside and try and pick up A 570 like this
Honestly what I would do is start saving my pennies now and wait for Kepler/the rest of Southern Islands to drop. If you're not happy with the 6850 and really want the best of the best, I think that's your best move

Gonna concur with Tef here, if you can resell it for a decent price a 570 now or maybe kepler/lower end southern islands depending on pricing will absolutely be the best bang for buck in terms of pure performance.

Not a build question exactly, but: Friend is looking to get a laptop and is demanding I provide suggestions. My suggestion of "Don't get a laptop, get a better desktop for less" isn't viable, but I don't know who makes good laptops and who makes crap. Anyone got a handy site I can rip off suggestions from or just a personal preference for about $600?

Ok so. I plan on building a computer. (or rather buying the parts, my friend is going to show me how to build it.) and I looked at the MMO Champions Gaming Rig to see what would be good. I'm trying to go top of the line with this but realized it'd be about 2,000 dollars if I had bought all they showed plus a mouse and keyboard. So I modified a few things. I was wondering if anyone could give a look over and possibly let me know if there are any changes I need to make or any extra cords or wires I should grab with it. I don't know if I'm doing this right (I'm not exactly computer parts savvy) so I don't know if what I have can even BE mixed and matched at this point. But here it all is. I'll put links below. I'm buying from a combo of Amazon and Newegg. Although I haven't yet checked everything to each store for the lowest price. Altogether I'm looking at around 1500. Which isn't bad really.
And that's everything. Mouse and keyboard are whatever right now. That's what I have so far. Like I said, I don't know exactly if this is all compatible with each other because I was trying to find a way to save some money by swapping parts out and I'm not sure if I made a mistake somewhere. So if anyone has the grace to check this out and let me know and (if I need to) make any changes I would be extremely grateful. I'm just afraid to do this without anyone checking it. Expensive. I don't mind spending another 100 or so if there are certain things I'll definitely need or if a part has to be swapped out. Or if there are any wires or the like I need. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks guys! Just use that little @(name) thing to grab my attention if anyone gets a chance to look this over. I need to head to work soon but I'll be back. Thanks again!

Well if you told me you wanted to blow your budget by 50%, I would've built a different system :P
For most people, a full tower isn't even close to necessary. If you like the look of the HAF, the HAF 912 is a pretty popular recommendation. Some thread favorites are the Antec P280, NZXT Phantom (available in multiple colors), Corsair 600T (also in white), and the Fractal Design Define R3 and Arc Midi.
That PSU is massively overkill for this build, but with the -$10 promo code and if you're lucky enough to get the $30 MIR, that's an outstanding price.
There is absolutely zero reason to go with AMD CPU right now (and for the foreseeable future). They're simply not competitive with Intel. Go with either an i3-2120, i5-2300, or i5-2500k. Performance difference between the 2120 and 2300 is negligible, but the four physical cores of the 2300 may be a bit more future proof. The 2500k is obviously the best choice if you can afford it. If you get the 2500k, pair it with a CM Hyper 212+, otherwise stock is fine.
If you can squeeze something like an 60GB OCZ Agility 3 into your budget, you could use it as a cache drive and make the overall system fairly noticeably snappier.

Good luck!
For just slightly more (but actually less if you get the MIR), you could get a 120GB OCZ Agility 3. Intel SSDs are generally pretty overpriced. That Agility 3 will be faster and give you 50% more space.
@atun88
Are you just going with the Zotac because it has onboard wifi? I would go with a more reputable manufacturer and grab a wireless dongle. I agree with TheCanMan, the Intel drives aren't worth it, the increased reliability isn't particularly worth the cost for most people. The Agility 3 is a pretty good deal now that the firmware's been updated (I guess I could be biased, since I own one, but it works great).
If you really want to stick to your budget, you can definitely drop to an i3-2100 without having issues gaming.

I have the 120GB OCZ Agility 3, and I love it. It's a really good SSD for the price. I use it as my OS and frequently used programs drive. If you are smart with your SSD, and minimize the writes (by doing things like moving your entire Users structure to a spindle drive), it will last a very long time.

Pulled the trigger on Samsung, NewEgg should ship around tomorrow
Case: Corsair Carbide 400R (Graphite) - Same as my last one.
Power: OCZ ZT Series 550W - Alec suggested this for my last build. Also, $15 Gift Card promo!
Mobo: ASUS P8P67 Rev 3.1 - Since I'm going bigger than 64GB with my SSD I'll skip on the Pro.
CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K - Naturally.
Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212+ - As usual.
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x 4GB) DDR3 - Can't find a super-compelling case for getting a 2x8GB kit at this point in time.
Graphics: EVGA 550 Ti (Fermi) - I don't know why, I just feel like an nVidia will get me further in the long run.
Monitor: Asus VS238H-P 23" 1920x1080 - I like this.
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200RPM - Will probably wait on this until prices go down.
SSD: Crucial M4 128GB SATA-III - I have no idea what I'm doing!
Optical: ASUS 24x DVD Burner
Keyboard: Cherry G-81 Black - A keyboard that will last forever?
Mouse: Logitech M500 Tiltwheel Corded - I still have nightmares about our first wireless mouse and the battery going dead whilst playing Doom 2.
OS: Windows 7 Professional OEM - Just seems like it'll give me what I need. No .edu email address, sadly.

Thoughts? the total ended up being 1200...damnnn way over my budget hahahah
Gonna concur with Tef here, if you can resell it for a decent price a 570 now or maybe kepler/lower end southern islands depending on pricing will absolutely be the best bang for buck in terms of pure performance.
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better

I'm in the GH community too, you could probably figure out everything you need to know from the wiki. I have a Filco w/ Cherry MX Brown, but end of the day it's all preference.

For the same total price on the case/CPU/mobo, I'd recommend
HAF 922
i5-2500k
ASRock Extreme3 Gen3
Intel just blows AMD out of the water above the $80 point right now, and this is coming from someone who has an x4 955 in his system.
EDIT: there's no reason to spend $85 on an NH-D14 when a Hyper 212 EVO will do the same job for $30.
EDIT EDIT: this 80 Plus BRONZE OCZ 650W power supply is $45 right now after rebate/promo card.

Well if you told me you wanted to blow your budget by 50%, I would've built a different system :P
Good luck!
For motherboards, the ASRock Z68 Pro3 Gen3 is a popular less expensive option, as is the Extreme3 Gen3.
If you can squeeze something like an 60GB OCZ Agility 3 into your budget, you could use it as a cache drive and make the overall system fairly noticeably snappier.
For just slightly more (but actually less if you get the MIR), you could get a 120GB OCZ Agility 3. Intel SSDs are generally pretty overpriced. That Agility 3 will be faster and give you 50% more space.
