No Wireless Connection on Laptop

Long story short my mum fucked with the settings on her Compaq laptop (very new) and now it doesn't detect wireless. The wireless network is fine, this is most definitely NOT a problem with the router or the connection or the toaster or other related appliances. There is zero detection.

She was trying to stop java from constantly bothering her to update (which is also something I could get an answer on because that shit was in her and my face every five minutes) and I believe she began blindly shitting about with the start up functions. She tells me she was clicking boxes and I asked her if she had any idea what she was clicking and she said no and then I threatened to kill myself.

What should I be looking for as far as wireless, start up processes, and child lockout?
How do I actually access these because I'm not too deft with computers myself. Control panel was not fruitful.

DETAILS:
It says there is no connection at all and that a cable may be broken
It's Windows 7 64bit
Computer is like a month old

I'm going to ask the obvious here, but did you try calling Compaq's help line since the computer is so new?

    MSConfig
    Normal Start up

    Device Manager
    Network Adapters
    (View - show hidden devices)

Make sure your network adapter is physically there, if you have any adapters with #(numbers) after them remove them EX
    Microsoft 6 to 4 adapter #4

dont uninstall adapters without numbers after them, also make sure your wireless is turned on from the function key hotkey. That'll be the fn key + whatever f key has the wireless adapter symbol on it (f11?)

I would also check that the wireless adapter wasn't disabled. It should be somewhere like Control Panel -> network and internet -> view network status and tasks -> change adapter settings.

If she was trying to prevent the java update program from booting up during startup, she could have accidentally done the same with essential wireless-related services. Check that the startup types of the services match those on this list, (if you're running Win7):

[edit] Also, go to msconfig and make sure none of the windows services have been unchecked.
