...and it looks like my PS2 might die too. I've been thinking about getting an used console off ebay. How reliable are older PS3 models? Mine was a 2nd generation 40GB and it must've lasted 3 years or so. I think the only PS2 game I might play in the short term is FF12 if it helps.
Don't suggest a 360, I have a HUGE Rock Band DLC library so I don't think I might switch consoles any time soon.

I think the older G1and G2s were known to run a little hot, and a few failures, but nothing on the level of the 360. I'd be more worried of getting screwed due to eBay though and would rather pay for a new slim. Just me, though.
If you can hold out until Black Friday there should be some decent deals on new PS3s. Granted, I don't think I could with Uncharted 3 hitting, but still. Radio Shack will have the 160gb PS3 for $199, and will throw in a $20 gift card. Better deals are possible at other stores, at least as far as a larger gift card or other extras thrown in. Probably won't get much cheaper than that for actual purchase price.

Admittedly I'm not super familiar with Sony's policies, but could you not get them to fix it? Even if there is an out-of-warranty cost, wouldn't it be cheaper than getting a brand new one?
Don't buy a used console, not from the internet, not from a game store. I beg you. Just don't. You'll be so much happier saving that little bit extra to get a fresh unit.

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious.
