Mechwarrior Online: A thing that is going to happen
For the longest time this was presumed stuck in legal hell and left to die a slow death. But today it seems that it's becoming a reality to be released in the summer of 2012!
After two years of near-total silence about the fate of the MechWarrior reboot, Piranha Games have announced MechWarrior Online, a free-to-play, team-based multiplayer BattleMech sim. It’s also going to tell the story of the Battletech universe in real-time, starting from just before the Clan Invasion of 3050. Each day, players will do battle on behalf of the universe’s major factions, and each day in the game will represent a single day’s action in the fictional Inner Sphere. It will go live in the second half of 2012.
The PCgamer article can be found here. The game's website is right here. The devblog is a pretty neat read and also a recap! It seems to me like they're going for something like World of Tanks, only with giant robots rather than those peasant vehicles.
Are you excited for this? I know I really, really am.
I'm happy that it's Free to Play, too. Doesn't make sense that I am, but it seems to be a profitable model to companies and offer flexibility for me as a consumer.
The devblog goes into why they picked F2P for their model, and it basically comes down to that they got overwhelming interest in it, and more importantly a lack of publisher interest in a ''standard'' game like Mechwarrior 4. I hope it works out for them, because I'm really excited to see this happen!
This is fantastic. I'm really interested in how the real time player affected world is going to work.

YES YES YES
I really hope this does well and is good.
A lot.
Mechwarrior 3 was my first PC game (I had a mac and some crappy games and also warcraft before but those aren't counting) and I played the shit out of it from the ages of 13-16 or so. Got really into the community on the MSN gaming zone
The way it's looking to me is that the players will be Inner Sphere mercs, so no clantech just yet. 3048 is just outside the Clan invasion anyway, so maybe those'll get dropped in later.

I actually meant clan as in like a guild.
Merc Corps in this game.
Which is cool.
Armless but not Harmless
Everyone has to use mechs without obvious arm systems like the Catapult, Yeoman, Raven, Fafnir, and so on
The MW3 engine was the best so far, superior blend of graphics, weapon balance, hit detection, movement animations, etc. MW4 screwed up the weapons and the graphics became too focused on scenery.
I've reserved my Callsign ("Ruckus") and will be breaching your fusion reactors from the cockpit of my Hunchback on Launch Day. And if it comes with Jumpjets, you best be keepin an eye on the sky.

Nothing inspires fear in your enemies like a trashcan with legs
Cause some of them heavy mechs look silly.
