There will be no pass selling on the forums anymore, see other post for details.
Sorry for my post, I was busy writing it while you were posting yours. Please disregard my previous post on buying them through this thread, however my advice is still valid, and usable for any online to person transaction.
while that is good general advice, i would still be very hesitant to purchase a pass through any but official channels. we know there are new security measures being put in place with the badges, but don't know what they are (since announcing them publicly would allow forgers to copy them), so it's extremely difficult/impossible to know if the pass you've been sold is for real, since you won't know what to look for. finding out at the door is probably not an experience anyone wants.
Why are there still individual badges for 35 a piece for each day... yet 3 day badges are gone?
I am sure that they set aside a certain amount of passes for each category. Every convention does the same thing.
This is exactly right. Some people can't go for all 3 days, so single day badges are set aside. Yes, some people will just buy three single day badges now that 3-days are sold out. That's the benefit of buying early, save money and guarantee yourself a pass.

The first year I attended PAX East I ended up buying a Saturday and Sunday badge (twice). But I'm pretty sure that's it's the earliest they sold out of 3 days passes.
There are some people who are buying badges for boyfriends/husbands or girlfriends/wives, and those relationships may not last, or work may decide to fuck you like the fist of an angry god, sick children, grounded children accidents etc. Things happen, <edited for compliance by zepherin>
For one of the reasons above that's why I got a refund for my second pass. Someone else out there has it now and that makes me happy. And it got to go through the official channels so that makes me happy too.
I hope the counterfeiting does go down this year, it sounded like it reached mind blowing levels last year.

Bummer. I've been trying to talk some friends into going with me so I wouldn't have to wander the floor alone, but I guess now that's just the way it'll have to be. I'm sure I'll still have tons of fun though! Greatly looking forward to this being my first PAX. Hopefully of many!
Normally they post a news announcement on the PAX East site further in advance of selling out. I'm surprised I missed the title "PAX East" on my RSS for PA. Ugh, especially selling out a month sooner than last year, more warning would've been polite to people who did plan on attending but waited for financial reasons. I know they don't really care that much, though, whatever fills the convention center.

On January 6th they announced on Twitter they were 90% sold out. I was about to try and convince a few friends to attend this year but with no avail. I guess as soon as you state you're almost sold out, undecided people jump in.

They usually announce when they're down around 1000 badges or so left. This year they announced 10% (which is probably more than 1000). PAX is popular. It's going to sell out faster and faster every year. They DO care about people getting to go, but they can't exactly help that the convention is popular and that the popularity is increasing.
Pretty happy I grabbed 3 3-Day passes this Friday. One for me and two friends. Got another buddy to do the same and get his Saturday morning. Sucks they sold out, but that does make it seem that this year will be big with the early sell out.
Also @srsizzy, yeah, I jumped in right as I saw the 90% sell out. I was one of those undecided beforehand. :P

I waited until January 4th for financial reasons. I thought they would sell-out sooner...passes went on sale early November. Like others have said, the best way to guarantee a pass is to buy early (or ask as a gift -- I've found they make great Xmas presents).
I had to wait for financial reasons but missed out. We're trying to figure out now what to do.
Financially, it's not the smartest move, but buying a one day pass for each day is also an option I believe. Or buying two of the three days to make up for costs.
Dang, was really hoping to go this year. Was watching the forums and main site thinking one of those would of updated when passes were getting low. Guess the price of not usin twitter. Maybe next year.
i'm pretty surprised so many people are willing to forgo the whole event just because 3-day passes are gone. i would think that if you're not doing too much traveling you could just do one or two days, and if you are traveling, the $40 difference between a 3-day and 3 one-day passes would be sort of negligible compared to travel expenses.
The key lesson to learn here: Do everything in one's power to know one's situation when badges go on sale, then make one's decision on buying badges right then.
There's always a slew of these types of posts once badges sell out, no matter how fast or how slow it happens. Many folks will not get badges because they sell out and will have their reasons why they waited. It's not even that the reasons are bad, it's just the reality of a popular show that planning when the show goes on sale is the best bet.
For those who are choosing not to go any longer due to 3-day badges being sold out: badges will go on sale for PAX East 2013 somewhere around a month or two after PAX Prime 2012 ends. Start planning right now if at all possible.
Blah, I went and bought single passes. Mainly do to my wife already mid costume prep. I'll take the money hit as a reminder about pax events. Doesn't hurt too bad as my hotel and travel expenses were under 300.

I remember my cousin, who is from the Boston area and knows next to nothing about videogames, remarked that the local news featured the event prominently. PAX East, (and PAX in general), definitely has mainstream visibility, and I'm not surprised the badges have sold out.
I'm glad I bought my 3-day pass in early December. This will be my 3rd East, since I live only 2 hours away from Boston. I've only been to one PAX Prime, in 2010. I hope to attend Prime this year.
I'm very excited and April 6th can't come fast enough.
I'm actually going to skip this year - I really really wanted to go but I can't put my family in a sticky money situation to do it. It will suck in a month when money is better and I'll wish I was going, but we had a car die and some bills that couldn't be avoided so it just wasn't to be this year. Next year I'll be back with a vengeance. I had booked a hotel too - gotta cancel that today.
I'm just going to have to find a way to geek out in smaller doses during the year so maybe this will be good for me! I look forward to pax because it's the only time I play D&D, Magic, etc - maybe I just need to fix that so I'm not putting all my eggs in the Pax basket.
Question me this, PAX-fans, [Insert Philosoraptor here] if PAX 3-day passes are sold out, how are these still inventory for 3 one-day passes? Somewhat upset at this. If I can pick up 3 one-day passes, I should be able to pick up *some* kind of discount as there obviously is room for another 3-day passer there. This almost seems like exploitation...displeased.

If all anybody buys is 3-day passes, then there are zero 3-day passes and 3,000 of each other pass left. 3-day passes being sold out doesn't mean that there is no more room at pax, it means that there are no more 3-day passes. It's like a store being sold out of 3-packs of lighters, but still having single packs. You can still buy 3 lighters, but you have to pay more, because the discounted 3-pack is sold out.
If you want to cry exploitation, feel free, but don't expect sympathy for it.

Man oh man am I ever glad that I bought my tickets on the 1st. I waited too long last year and had to buy the passes separately. All I have left to do is book my flight and I will be ready for PAX. Think I am going to book my flight next week.
Hrm... since PAX was supposed to be our honeymoon, and I dropped the ball... I think I'll just get us each friday and saturday passes for PAX, and Saturday and Sunday passes for the anime convention since she loves anime and such.

True, but 10% left which is about 5k-6k lasted 2 days. Where as last year that last 10% lasted a couple weeks and Pax didn't sell out until about 3 weeks beforeish.

You cant compare previous years paxes to what happen for this one. PAX is going to sell out faster and faster every year.
This last prime sold out of 3days in 22days! It wont be long before East is the same way.
just surprised. i was going to order all my 3-day passes on friday. It didnt sell out this fast the last 2 years... any chance of more passes being made available?

No. They set the number of passes when they go on sale. PAX is not just PAX East, it feeds off the popularity of PAX Prime. As BR said, prime sold out in 22 days. 3 months is not really that fast. It will only get faster. Previous years are not any sort of an indicator of how something with increasing popularity will sell out the next year, except to say "it will be faster than this next year".

Well you can always work real hard to buy all 3 single day passes,or you can miss out on sunday since it closes early anyway.
