Hideo Kojima Interview regarding the HD Collection:
PlayStation.Blog: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was designed for PSP — a portable device. What changes did Kojima Productions make to the upcoming PS3 version so it could be enjoyed on a high-definition home console?
Hideo Kojima, Director, Kojima Productions: The PSP obviously has fewer buttons than the PS3 controller, and it had some limitations when it comes to control. Using the DualShock 3, movement of many things improved…as did, of course, [the addition of] rumble support.
On the PSP, it was also hard to tell some textures apart. Now, rendered in HD, they are much easier to see. The in-game text is also easier to read.

PSB: Your process of “transfarring” will allow PSP players to take their Peace Walker save files from one console to another, and we will also see similar cross-play support with the PS Vita and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Is this the future of gaming, and would you like to explore beyond what already has been announced?
Kojima: Peace Walker is the first step. It is a PSP game in HD that lets one go back and forth between one PSP and a PSP. The next step is to take PS2-quality games, such as Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, to HD and then to take them to Vita transfarring.
My next step is games that will come out for the PS3 from now on, so I can take advantage of this technology with the Vita with content that is exactly the same. I hope that cloud service is available now, and it would be ideal for me if transfarring were to serve as a bridge between the two services.

PSB: Just before E3, a glimpse of what will be its new graphic engine (FOX Engine) was shown. What would you say are their greatest visual benefits? Is there anything that stands out in this technology that you can tell us about?
Kojima: For now, FOX Engine has high performance in developing games on multiple platforms; I think that is the most prominent feature. At this point, it is not an engine that has anything particularly prominent when compared to what’s on the market. From now on, we hope to add features and functions that stand out from other engines.

PSB: Okay, PS Vita has already been revealed. Are you interested in the console? What are the features that draw your attention most to a portable device?
Kojima: As for the multitouch pad on the back of the console, I do not want to force users to use it. The PS Vita has cutting-edge technology and it’s the best there is – especially with integration with the PS3 – and I am very pleased I can offer it to users.

PSB: With the commercial success of L.A. Noire, and the return of cyberpunk with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, do you believe that there is a market for a new Snatcher game?
Kojima: L.A. Noire is a game that I really like, but unfortunately I have not played it. I think it is coming out in Japan today, so when I return, I intend to play it. This idea of an open world in 3D is very good, and I would love to do something like Snatcher, but I do not have the time or the means to do so. But if anyone else would like to develop it, I would love it.
NOTE: A few hours after this interview, Hideo Kojima, in collaboration with Suda 51 and Akira Yamaoka, announced a radio drama called “Sdatcher” based on Snatcher.

PSB: What qualities do you think a game designer needs to be hired in today’s industry?
Kojima: Right now, it’s very similar to movies: You need a lot of money. So rather than doing what you want, doing what you like, you must have a clear idea of marketing and sales. That’s what’s happening to us with FOX Engine; you do not need be an expert in programming to develop a game, but if you have a question, you still need an expert on-hand to provide an answer.
As for expression, that has reached a high level. Video games are trying to reach the peak of entertainment, so game makers should be clear that things like emotion and sound are among the many things that have to be involved.

PSB: How has your perspective from your business point of view and as a game developer changed, now that you are Vice President of Konami Digital?
Kojima: I would like to not change. My priority continues to be to create and produce my own games. Now that I can do this well, I can generate more time to help in other company products, especially in creative ways.

I wonder how the Peace Walker version handles random soldier generation. In the PSP game, it grabs you random dudes when you do a "search" and generates them from the IP addresses the handhold can find. How does that work on a console that never moves, or is physically connected to the network and doesn't have wireless enabled?

I saw, I think on IGN, that if you pre-order or get the Collector's Edition, I can't remember which one, you get a code that will let you download it from the PSN store. I'm nto sure if it's an HD version or the classic.

There's two ways to kill The End before fighting him, right?
When The Boss(?) wheels him out in that little dock area, you can try and snipe him when she leaves him there or you can save, set your console to like... ten years ahead, reload the save and he'll be dead

Those are the "methods" I remember hearing about, but I always just fought him.

I had this question as well. I don't see any mention of it on this limited edition listing on Amazon, or as a preorder bonus, which just doesn't make it feel as much like a "collection" if that makes any sense.

I also found this article mentioning an Ultimate collection, but I don't see any mention of it on Zavvi's website.

So this is actually coming out soon? I swear I heard somebody mention a week ago that it got delayed until 2012.

I'll probably wait to hear how PW plays. If they properly rejiggered the controls, then I'll be all over this game.

    Metal Gear thread?

    (that joke never gets old)

I must confess; in a month filled with Triple-A titles with crazy current graphics like Uncharted 3, Skyrim, and Zelda Skyward Sword (well, that one's not exactly "current gen", but it's going to be as pretty as one), this might be the one game I'm the most excited about.

Frankly, I keep dreading something will go wrong, because it all sounds too good to be true: Fully remastered graphics, 60 fps, the ability to turn off black bars during cutscenes, redrawn icons and portraits, AND online multiplayer? Plus all the extras from Substance and Subsistence as well as the original MG 1 and 2?

If this goes smoothly, this will easily be the ultimate benchmark for HD re-releases. Seriously, who else is going to put out that much effort? There's a Devil May Cry Collection coming up and I already know Capcom's going to mess that up. Not like it had a chance anyway seeing how it includes DMC2.

I'm just bummed the Limited Edition wasn't a meatier package to justify the price; with Newegg selling the game at $40, it would take a seriously diehard (and stupid) person to spend double that amount just for an artbook that's half the size of the Japanese one.

You seen their LE? A 450 page artbook, a Snake figure, and a voucher for MGS1. That would have gotten my extra dollars.

In any event, I feel I should start things off with a confession.

I like Twin Snakes better than the original MGS1.

    http://youtu.be/Vl8U5BiU0q8

    I know...it's stupid.

But it also has plenty of awesome moments, so I can forgive an anime side-flip here and there.

I would also like to request a gif of said side-flip, if possible.

Along with that gif of Ocelot in MGS4. I've seen it before, but can't find it for the life of me now.

Like, you can't get the Japanese version and expect it to work on your UK XBOX. Not sure about US-UK though.

I want to play this, but I refuse to wait until next year.

Some are, some aren't. Best idea is probably to google it, though it might take a couple of days for someone to confirm it.

Oh and one thing I forgot in my last post to the OP. The Vita versions are scheduled for Early 2012.

Edit: Okay, Play Asia just confirmed that the US version of the Collection won't work on PAL 360's.

Man, you guys are lucky. I was looking forward to this for ages, but they delayed it until like, February here.

Then just order it from videogameplus.ca like I did :) Shipped out 3 days ago too so should be here this week!

    100% agreed.

I didn't even know about the remastered graphics, 60fps, redrawn icons and portraits! Super excited now :D

I also agree with Prof. I like Twin Snakes better than MGS1, Snake does a backflip off of a missile for god's sake!

Have they mentioned how they're doing the controls for 360?

The 360 doesn't have pressure sensitive face buttons, so interrogating enemies (or slitting their throats) wouldn't work properly in MGS3, nor would aiming in 2 or 3

Nothing mentioned on the internets anywhere, but general consensus is that aiming and firing will most likely be handled with the left and right triggers. Not sure on interrogating. Probably one button to grab the guy, push another button to slit his throat.

Or maybe, one button to grab the guy and half-pull RT to interrogate complete-pull to slit throats.

I can't even imagine how awkward this would be when combined with the rest of MGS's controls

Or maybe they developed some completely new control scheme to deal with the Xbox controller, I dunno. Gamecube didn't have pressure sensitive buttons, and I don't remember Twin Snakes being overly complicated.

    Wasn't MGS2 on OXbox? How'd that go?

Substance was released on xbox. I had it and it had some minor issues, like spots where the framerate would shit the bed on the tanker with all the rain and transparency effect around the edges of hair looked like poop. Controls were fine though.

Still, I'm getting this on PS3. I already have MGS1 which plays in it and of course 4. Not being able to play Snake Eater on my slim was 90% of the reason I was pissed at my ex for stealing my BC PS3.

Also incredibly excited for Peace Walker. Love me some Big Boss.

So, I've never played Peace Walker, as I didn't own a PSP. I know this game is pretty big on co-op, so a few questions...

    1) Can the game still be enjoyed if you play most of it on single player?

    2) Should we exchange gamertags to set up a co-op game? I'd love to meet up at a specific time and play together tomorrow, if anyone else is down.
