Does anyone - anyone play the MGS4 Metal Gear Online anymore by any curiosity? Im just wondering if its worth downloading. Im going back to MGS4, are there any tips I should really know about it?
I'll address this since no one else has. Last I logged on (which was some time ago), there were indeed people still playing. But I'd gather it's primarily a small community with their own meta-rules and shit.
I really enjoyed the time I spent with it at release but my PS3 was stolen by a vindictive ex and I didn't get a replacement until like 2010. That said the online is very antiquated, harking back to the early days of PSN (it does not use the PSN friends list and you need to set up a separate Konami account).
I don't understand your comment on downloading it? If you have MGS4 you should have MGO. You can always log in to it and see for yourself. Though I would say don't waste your time, which is a shame. It really is a unique experience.
I would still play this game quite a bit, if my PS3 controller wasn't broken (and I wasn't too lazy/busy to fix it). MGO is awesome if you ask me. Love the quirky Metal Gear gameplay of hiding in boxes and laying down porno mags and what not, combined with what is actually a pretty cool third-person tactical shooter.
I just wish that they would have also brought back the original MGO with this HD collection
According to Game Informer, the next issue of of OPMUK confirms that Kojima is working on a new MGS game, which the cover refers to as MGS5. The cover refers to Rising as well, so it's unlikely that they're just talking about Rising as if it were MGS5.

I used to play, I thought the game was really quite fun. But the Konami ID BS is too much for me to bother with anymore. Huge updates and data that corrupts itself randomly all the time. Would love a revamped MGO with MGS5...

Being the proud owner (as of last night) of a shiny new 3Dtv, I find myself annoyed that this is not in 3D.
I swear to god, Konami, if you release Snake Eater 3D for PS3/360 you can just have my bank account.
Haha, I had forgotten what Big Boss was using for a lighter at the end of Chapter 5 of Peace Walker.
Now I really want to see his further adventures, but he has to keep using that lighter. Just kicking ass and chilling in Outer Heaven, lighting up his cigars with that thing.

How do the MSX games look in this? Do they fill the whole screen vertically and have black bars on the sides? Are the graphics pretty clear, or they they look blurry?
I'm trying to decide if I should wait for the collection to play them, or play the PS2 versions while I wait to buy the collection.

Yeah, I played the beta but never bothered with the full version because I knew how shit the experience was. If they'd actually had a clue and used the PSN like everyone else, it would've been huge. But no, they had to come up with their own shitty system so they could both collect their own data on players and avoid paying Sony royalties for the DLC. End result was a clusterfuck and led to only the most hardcore fans (of which there's admittedly a few) bothering with MGO.
I don't know why they haven't come out with a new MGO for XBL/PSN, aside from Konami just being clueless idiots this gen anyway.
AaronKI: Check out Giant Bomb's Quick Look, though you might want to skip like 15-20 minutes into it as they're absolutely useless at MGS2. From memory, they looked pretty clear but yes, they've got black bars on the sides. It's not like they remade it or anything, it's just emulated.
Awesome, thanks. I just wanted to make sure the screen wasn't going to be the size of a postage stamp or have some sort of smoothing filter on it. I enjoy seeing chunky pixels, so that's good news. (The bad news for me: It looks like a big enough improvement over playing the PS2 version in blur-o-vision on my TV to wait for the collection.)
I'm guessing you're not in the US? Well you can always import like me. Assuming you've got a PS3 anyway, Konami have decided to fuck over PAL 360 owners by making the collection region locked.
Having played through Metal Gear, I can confirm that they're in 4:3 with black bars on the left and right, and have that high definition chunk that lets you see every single individual pixel.
And in a testament to doing their homework, the devs even tweaked them for the collection, altering some text to accommodated the controls and system. Gotta give them props for fiddling with what a lesser man would have completely forgotten about.

I forgot too. What was it?
It was Zadornov's robo-hand, fingers held in the V position. The index finger flipped open and a little flame comes out.
It was a little big to carry in a pocket, but I guess it's good that Boss has so many pouches.
My little tribute to the series in true anime OP style! You know it's what Kojima was going for anyway in the Peace Walker trailers. Spoilers for 1-4 obviously.

Finally had this delivered! MGS2 looks soooo damn sharp and still plays great.
According to Game Informer, the next issue of of OPMUK confirms that Kojima is working on a new MGS game, which the cover refers to as MGS5. The cover refers to Rising as well, so it's unlikely that they're just talking about Rising as if it were MGS5.
Unfortunately, it just came out in the last day or so that this was all a little blown out of proportion because people didn't really read the story or something. Joystiq link: Here.
From the article itself...
Rather than boldly announcing that MGS 5 is happening, Kojima told the magazine that "I think we'll probably have to make it at some point, but what that will be, we have no idea." And rather than taking on the director job right away Kojima is, as ever, trying to free himself from Metal Gear. "As far as my involvement in the project is concerned, [it] probably won't be as much as it was with MGS1 - maybe I can do just one stage!" he said. Kojima told OPM that if he has other Kojima Productions staff make a game from the start, he won't have to step in to preserve his vision.
First part underlined for the obvious reason, second part for "Yes, Kojima, we know".
It's just as well, really, as the only real MGS5 Scenario I can think of is (general all-around story spoilers)
Taking up where Peace Walker left off which leads into, essentially, remaking Metal Gear 1, but from Big Boss' perspective. Maybe partway through for the 'second act', you switch to Solid Snake and play out the actual Metal Gear 1 storyline and finish it up.
While it likely has the potential for something kind of awesome, it seems a little unnecessary to me in terms of narrative, so I would be a little disappointed. That's just really the only area that I see as 'untouched but relevant' unless they retcon the hell out of MGS4's ending or do something -else- between MGS2 and 4. (That's where Rising takes place, storyline-wise, right?) Then again, I might be missing something pretty glaring.
Dooooo eeeeeet. In spite of all the AAA titles I've bought within the last 2 months, this has garnered the most playtime. This collection is worth every penny just for MGS3 alone.

MGS3 is SO GOOD. In fact, it's making my playthru of MGS2 feel long and drawn out because I wanna play MGS3 right now but I know that if I play MGS3 then I won't be able to fall back into MGS2's gameplay.
But anyway, MGS3 is one of my favorite games. It takes an hour or two to warm up, but the last 4 hours are brilliant with the final 1.5 hours being absolute excellence.
The sequence of events from the pre-climax to the ending are one of my favorite bits of gaming ever.
Unfortunately, it just came out in the last day or so that this was all a little blown out of proportion because people didn't really read the story or something.
Yeah, I came across that the other day as well. That magazine cover was ridiculously misleading.
Shit gets real pretty fast in Peace Walker. The controls are a little jarring, not being able to move in cover/while prone kinda stinks. Enjoying the game though :^:
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
I picked this up on release day and took a glimpse at each game to see how they looked in HD. I am really looking forward to playing these but i'm holding off.
Currently i'm playing MGS and Twin Snakes. I'm actually playing through one portion of the original, and then replaying that same portion from the remake. After I do that, I'll start with MGS2.

I FINALLY got my copy of this from Amazon. The first time they sent it, it got lost in transit, and the second time was delayed. But they gave me a bunch of promo credit for my trouble, meaning I basically got the game for free, so I'm still pretty happy with them.
Anyway.
I know there are a couple of specific MGS3 codec conversations that people think of first when they try to remember their favorites, like
The box, or Sigint's nightmare
but I think my favorite one is
The one with Sigint where Snake spends like, ten minutes nerding out over his M1911A1, describing all of the amazing modifications that have been made to it, how it's the best weapon he's ever used, and so on.
Then Sigint is just like "Well, I'll be damned!"
I don't know if it's supposed to be as funny as it is, but it's hilarious.
I FINALLY got my copy as well, though it was because a shitty site seemingly used the worst post on the planet.
I've started with MGS2 but having played MGS2 and MGS3 so much it's not funny, I'm finding this kinda hard to adjust to. I'm so used to pressing circle to select in menus that I find myself pressing it even though I know they've reassigned it to X. Alongside this, everything seems so huge. Subtitles and the item menus especially.

You know what's weird about that one?
The first time I played the game I was convinced, convinced that this was some VR simulation or sci-fi time travel story, because the 1911 would prove to be an updated model from the future instead of just "well, I guess whoever owned this gun really liked it and put an assload of modifications into it."
Something like if somebody handed Ezio a bat-grapple gun in Assassin's Creed.

Man, some of the achievements in this are kind of meaningless. The "PEACE WALKER" achievement in MGS3 is for beating the game without killing anyone, which is nice. It would be a nice challenge on Normal mode. But it doesn't say you have to do it on any particular difficulty, so I imagine you can just play on Very Easy and shoot everyone with the EZ Gun. On the other hand, some of them are fucking impossible.
Collect every Dog Tag in MGS2? I'd rather be thrown off a bridge.
But still, challenging achievements that I have to work really hard to get are better than easy, pointless ones.
3 is by far the easiest to get Platinum on (or just all achievements if you're on the 360). You can conceivably do it all in one complete playthrough. And I came this close to doing it, if it wasn't for me missing the water facepaint. It's one tall order to be sure, and I almost went insane from it. But it's totally possible.
The other 2 games are insane though, yeah. The dog tags? This means playing through on Extreme, and even with cheating with stealth/bandanna I don't think I'd want to fight those bosses. And Peace Walker? S rank every mission, and that's just to start! Not to mention there's a handful of multiplayer achievements too, so that could be a potential cockblock.
All the achievements boil down to "Wring every single drop of content from this game". As luck would have it, it just so happens that MGS3 is the easiest of the bunch to do so.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
No kill runs are also pretty necessary to get everything in Peace Walker.
Which is kind of a shame, as they give you quite a bit of lethal weapons to play with.

I'm not saying no kill runs are pointless, I'm saying the achievement is pointless because it doesn't care what difficulty level you do it on. An infant could do it in Very Easy mode, because you get a free EZ Gun.
The EZ Gun has infinite ammo, no suppressor degradation, a laser sight, and when you have it equipped, your camo index never drops below 80%, you can't be heard while running, and your stamina recovers over time.
Edit: Haha, typo on the MGS2 Dead Cell dossiers. "My predecessor... Gorge Sears.
It could be worse. Would you want it to require European Extreme?
No wait, it could be a lot worse. They could ask you to get Big Boss rank in 2 and 3. I would go completely bonkers over that and resign myself to never doing it. MGS4 was the only game I ever managed that feat, and only because they nerfed some of the requirements, and you could still cheat in places.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
I never beat MGS 2 past normal, because, while I love the stealth parts and don't mind dying if I get seen, fuck those horrible boss fights. They aren't fun, and I hate the controls. I don't remember MGS 3's bosses being even half as retarded.
Son of a bitch, I forgot how hard Liquid is in MGS1 original. Probably the hardest normal boss in the series.
The first time you fight him, you only have 2:30 to beat him. You have to know *exactly* what to do and where to stand to keep damaging him. He hits like a freight train and if you screw up and fall off even once or twice, you may not have enough time to finish him before the nuke goes off.
All the achievements boil down to "Wring every single drop of content from this game".
This kind of seems to be a Japanese thing, as there's plenty of games that come from over there (my personal experiences include the Yakuza series and the Dynasty Warriors series) and the above statement could be said for both of those as well. (Moreso Yakuza 3 than 4.) By the time I was done with Dynasty Warriors 7, there was literally nothing else I -could- do or unlock or 'grind towards' besides maxing out all the characters stats. Which....wasn't going to happen. At all.
