So, who wants my thoughts on Metal Gear Solid 4 from Crying Wolf through Screaming Mantis?
Because boy oh boy I got some thoughts:
Crying Wolf, once I figured it out, was awesome. Using night vision to see her felt cool, and it reminded me of a high tech version of The End's fight from MGS3. Just sneaking and crawling and listening and waiting for your opening.
ALL of Shadow Moses has been incredible, from the intro through to the end.
The split-screen Vamp vs. Raiden fight was unbelievable. Just incredible. Every aspect of it was badass.
I have NO idea what Naomi's deal is, but I feel ok with that because I don't think anyone else does either.
Piloting REX was fucking incredible.
REX vs. RAY!? How I managed to NEVER have that spoiled is beyond me, but it took me totally by surprise and it was INSANE.
The whole movie after really drove home how fucking nuts Liquid Ocelot is. The FOX...DIEEEEEEEEE! -- just kidding! Moment was crazy. The Raiden stuff was crazy. It was so good.
Now I just defeated Mantis, and it's still awesome. It's starting to get sad, melancholy really. I think Meryl just took some of my ammo or something, we don't know where Johnny is, and I'm about to get microwaved to bits. This should be insane.
I really hope they eventually explain what the BnB's deals were. The way each fight ended is bizarre and even Snake seems confused.
Also, I just remembered how freaked out I was by:
gross jello Big Boss skull that has been kept alive for years. God when it lurched up, especially after playing MGS3 so recently, I just couldn't believe it. So freaky.
Although Im waiting for a twist, because I KNOW Ive seen a picture on the Metal Gear Wiki years ago that showed an older Big Boss, that I believe was from MGS4, and i havent seen it yet.
So I'm braced for insanity.
Also I hope I get to see Mount Snakemore again because I couldn't process it at the time.
Finally - if someone could explain Outer Haven to me, or just tell me to wait until the end, let me know. I know it's based off of
Arsenal Gear...and its "free from Patriot control"...but it was also stolen from the Patriots...so wouldn't be like, EXACTLY under Patriot control? And wasn't Outer Haven something Big Boss formed?

Be prepared to have the insanity levels taken to 11. Everything will be explained. Oh, set aside an hour or so for the ending, and make sure you're not disturbed. Know how The Return Of the King had a never-ending ending? It's sorta like that.

It's an Arsenal Gear, not the Arsenal Gear. It's kinda implied there's one for each of the Patriot AIs - the one in MGS2 housing only GW. Haven definitely is not the same Gear, but it does have GW on board, which confused the hell out of me. I think you're supposed to infer Liquid removed the AI that's supposed to live in Haven, and installed GW (which he now has total control over) in it's place?
As for where it came from, I think Haven is just an older model; it only has room for 3 guardian RAYs and it's actually much smaller than Arsenal Gear.
Also yeah you are in for some good (bad) times ahead. Set aside a few hours to finish it off, you won't wanna be interrupted! ;D
Beat the game over the weekend. I think I may be able to go back and beat the final boos on normal. Easy gave me a chance to learn his tricks a little better.
I was really hoping that during the final boss fight or ending at some point
Snake would show up during one of the breaks in the fight with Armstrong. Like, he'd been on Armstrong's trail too, and his path finally crossed with Raiden's in Pakistan. Instead of just suddenly winning, maybe at the end of the fight Snake pops in and does some crazy platinum thing to distract Armstrong enough that Raiden is able to make like that dude from Temple of Doom and yank out the nanomachine heart.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

its probably the only spot in the game where the dodge move is pretty critical, so just do it when he so much as looks at you funny
Ocelot can be stun locked though in the first phase of his fight with "strong" punches, and there's only three phases. Still, he's certainly a formidable final boss.
So I totally didn't even know that Sundowner has an optional second phase to his fight. Apparently if you block his shield ram or slice his shield across the three points when he has it up, you can quickly and very, very carefully, cut off the little arms holding his 6 shields up, and once they're all gone, his music gets lyrics and he actually turns into a real boss.
Does anyone have any hints as how to go about (Achievement spoiler)
cutting off the Ray's tail? I assume it has to be during the first battle, but it doesn't seem to have a hitbox when I attack it - no sparks or damage or anything. The camera insisting that it wants to point at his feet twenty yards away doesn't help.

After starting the last boss fight with zero health items and failing about 50 times, I finally realized...
that you can keep the health items from the Zandanstu sequence into your next attempt.
Just focus on successfully completing the cuts to get the items. Don't worry about the fight as a whole. Once you've picked up the items, immediately open your codec and speak to the girl to save your game. Once you do this, any further deaths will restart you with the health packs you picked up during the attempt where you saved. Then you can just ninja run past the projectiles every time afterwards.
It also took me forever to realize that you have to be behind him when he glows green to correctly hit the blade mode target without getting countered.
Also, does anyone else remember some concept art from Vanquish where Sam was going to have a robot wolf sidekick with a chainsaw? Glad that idea actually made it into a game.
EM Grenades worked wonders. Parried the giant wheel of scrap metal death and told that shit to get out of here. Haven't died yet in this playthrough.
....except for falling off the roof before the dark tunnel. Three times. That crane jump part suuuucks.
Such a great damn game. I wish I would stop finding things to spend BP on, though, because I want to save up for the Fox Blade. But Wigs (Finally got 20 arms tonight) and upgrades. All of the upgrades.
underwhelmed me. It was a bunch of nonsense, and not in the usual thematic Metal Gear style. It was just plain nonsense. And the fight was okay. Kind of annoying, but also kind of fun. I guess I just expected more from a collaboration between KojiPro and Platinum. The base combat is still fun as fuck, and I mostly enjoyed the other bosses. The last act just took a nosedive for me.

I agree about almost everything you said.
The last mission though, is just plain crazy awesomeness. The actual final boss fight is a bit more annoying than awesome.
Did Platinum have to work with what Kojima's group had already started, and piece together a working game, or did they rebuild it from the ground up? As I played through the game, it felt to me like a DNF situation. Platinum kinda came in and did what they could to piece this thing together and get it out on time.
Not that it is a bad game, it just doesn't feel like 100% Platinum quality.

I wonder that as well. We know it was Platinum's request to move the timeline from between MGS2 and 4 to the end, to give em free reign on enemy design wackiness, but even when it was MGS Rising, Raiden had his new body and only one eye, and he was fighting a Mastiff. I bet it is a case of reusing stuff that originally served a very different purpose; the new mechanical looking body was probably supposed to be a precursor to his MGS4 one, not an advancement, little things like that.
I've no doubt the final boss had no place in the original version.
Aaaaaaaah yes, I remember Vamp now. Maybe Ill look through that database now...
And Peace Walker will be on the 360...although now that I have a PS3 Im looking for a deal on the HD collection just so I can have the whole MGS series under 1 console...

And after some serious reading - why was everyone clamoring for years about a Grey Fox game, when CLEARLY - clearly - the best game ever made would be a 1970's Ocelot game.
...or hell, get Platinum on it. Make it post MGS4, and make it Vanquish with Revolvers.
I know Ocelot is dead after MGS4, but I would totally play as a guy who someone uncovered the TRUTH about him, and wants to be him to clear his name as the world's greatest villain and bring something positive to the name Ocelot.
And then he is sassy and shoots EVERYONE.

Clearly, the best idea for a MGS game is "The Boss and a younger Cobra Unit during WW2"
But I would accept 1970s Ocelot. It would probably have to overwrite the events of Portable Ops, which I don't think Kojima considers canon anymore. Which is a shame. There's some good stuff in there, and it hinted at some stuff in MGS4 since it released between 3 and 4.
But yeah, let me play as Ocelot. Give me a "twirl guns" button.

So how is Revengeance? I was excited for it but I remember hearing that it was only like five hours long to beat and that is way too short for $60.
It's about 10 hours for one run through the story, actually. The clock only times successful combat encounters and nothing else. Video, codec, running around, failed combat, retries, etc are not timed. There's also a lots of VR missions.
There's a lot of game here, and more importantly, it's all quality.
Also fuck judging a game on how long it takes to beat. But that's a discussion for a different thread.

I've never played a shooter that gave you so much mobility. Felt kind of half done though.

Prepare for one of the best "genre shift" final bosses too. Spoilers, seriously.
that fight was harder than MGR's final boss

I ended up just sort of walking up to the top and jumping off and it worked.
Wow. Just wow.
This is nice, indeed.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this at one point in development hell and guaranteed to fail? And then they brought in Platinum to fix it?
If so: Well done, Platinum. Well done.
You rang?
Sweet, can I borrow it?
Seriously though, why is it not on psn?
Tempted to subscribe to Lovefilm (Amazon rental service) as a cheaper alternative to buying games outright.
Still the coolest thing I've ever built

I see no reason why she'd need to go back and be all sexytime with him in the end.
Also I thought Vamp was gay but I guess that was just the internet talking.
In order to save money Im going to try Peace Walker next since I already own it. We'll see how long I hold out.
I'm still not sure how bisexual = vamp, but...
And yeah,
Peace Walker is pretty damn awesome! What platform?
