I hate how videogame nerds hold up Mass Effect as some kind of story-telling triumph on par with anything that Hollywood can offer (to quote G4). Here's a hint: if the female's clothing looks like it's spray-painted on then it's probably not going to stand up as literature. Mass Effect is lowbrow space-opera in the vein of Buck Rodgers or the original Battlestar Galactica.
But God-damn is it fun.

And for my part, I hate when people undershoot.
Start at the start. Mass Effect isn't Catch 22 or Brothers K. Not close. Not Casablanca either. Heck, it's not even "This Man, This Monster!"
But if you put it head to head with an average summer blockbuster, which feels a good deal fairer, it comes out in the lead. By a fair margin, even. There's good characters, clever one liners, decent twists, and some very dumb bits, which is par for the course.
It bugs me when people praise a game's plot to the high heavens for being the above, yeah, but the opposite course is just as irritating.
You are both quite right. I think I channeled some of my hatred for G4 into my previous post.
Love me.

I don't think anyone in the world has ever claimed Mass Effect to be an excellent story by literary standards, but compared to most mainstream movies, and compared to basically all videogames, it is topnotch.

Happens to all of us. You see someone being stupid, you go a step further than you planned in the opposite direction to compensate. The whole "I don't want to be confused with those idiots" thing.

Some people are ashamed of being associated with Mass Effect fans.
In ME1 the option to play on Insanity is greyed out. I assume I have to beat Hardcore first. Is there any way to get around this limitation?
Think so.
Punch in the console command to unlock the achievement on a preexisting save file.
That's PC only, though.
Oh ok cool, just looked this up on the wiki. I'll do that, but it mentions something about rendering your profile invalid. I assume this just means I won't be able to earn any more achievements (which I don't care about anyway). I'd still be able to use that save for ME2, yes?
I have played ME1 through so many times trying to get a good save to carry on.
And if you want to "cheat", load any of those games into ME2, and then first chance you get, use a save editor on the ME2 save to change what you did (or didn't do) in ME1.

I think the Mass Effect story compares well with Star Trek - it's about on level. Is that pulpy sci-fi? I guess i like pulpy sci-fi, then.

Why I fear the ocean.
but it is still "very excellent", top tier by video game standards and one of the coolest sci-fi settings ever

Beware, as I believe this also stops you from getting any new achievements.

Related: Oh my god Casual sucks. I'm running an Adept this time around, and I don't need any powers for it! I may bump it to Veteran just because.
all it is is goddamn immunity spam

i get that some achievements are fun but man you get nothing for them.
I have played ME1 through so many times trying to get a good save to carry on.
I've edited the shit out of my saves.
You also get a bad ass N7 gamer pic. I'm still using it.
I just did this out of a morbid curiosity.
You are a bad bad person Dox.
