Hey guys - I haven't played any previous ES games - I've got a question for how viable a thief character would be.
The game seems combat heavy (obviously.) Warriors can hack their way zombie-infested dungeons, and mages can burn their way through, but if I want to be a sneaky/stabby type, does that work in this game? Can you sneak up on the undead in these games? How does a thief fight a dragon?
ty in advance for any info
Of course it works!
Attacking from stealth gives crazy bonuses - if you take one of the Sneak perks, your dagger attacks from stealth do FIFTEEN TIMES the damage.
Archery is an obvious choice for thief type characters as well.

Thief strategy in Oblivion: enter somebody's house while they sleep. Crouch in the corner facing the wall. Press auto-walk. Go and make yourself some dinner or watch some TV. Come back to find you are now a master of stealth.
Archery and ALCHEMY, are your friend, as well as illusion. You dont have to be a 'pure' thief without magic, but if you want to be, go into alchemy, a poisoned bow or dagger should deal with most things in the game, and illusion has lots of stealth-based perks if you arent averse to magic use.
..Morrowind books, yay. I was hoping those were online someplace. I have the Oblivion book set (From that dude who printed them out and made a hardcover book out of it.) but I'd been meaning to hunt down the Morrowind ones too, so I can read them all. Such good lore, if nothing else.

So what you're saying is you've got The Lusty Argonian Maid sitting around your house somewhere?
It is still a pretty bad precedent to set with the perk trees, because points are short enough as it is. For example, I was planning to spend 6 points in the conjuration tree to get up to double summons but if it turns out I need to level both undead and atronarch summons to get to that point then there is no way I can fit that perk into my build. It gives you fewer options and makes some of the trees a lot less appealing for no good reason.
Any of the perk trees you see connecting at the top require both branches to get the topmost skill. So yes, you'll need both summoning branches to get double summoning.

Most Oblivion books are actually Morrowind books, the lazy bastards didn't bother writing that many more.
Every lock in Oblivion was pickable with a level 0 character/skill/whatever. It was a waste of time, because there were MULTIPLE ways to watch/listen to the pins so that you could never fuck up and break a lockpick. Hopefully there is some actual chance/skill involved in lockpicking now, so the actual game skill level matters as much or more than the ability to notice some easily perceptible visual or aural cue.

So many people say Oblivion lock picking was easy, but it was hard for me
Fallout lock picking on the other hand I found really easy so I'm glad they are using that system.

That's not true.
You need 100 Conjuration, Elemental Potency or Dark Souls.
Because of the generousness of a fellow PA'er and the wonders of the forum secret santa, I am now the owner of Skyrim. However, I've never actually beaten Oblivion. I did a large chunk of the main quest once and then actually completed the Dark Brotherhood quests, but that's about it, other than general exploration and such. In my newest playthrough I've just reached Cloud Ruler Temple and done enough of the Dark Brotherhood to get the second entrance to the base. I've also gained access to the Arcane University and become Arena Champion.
Other than hunting down daedric artifacts (I have a few, skeleton key and azura's star namely) and the famed 100% chameleon suit, are there any other quick things I should try to do to assist myself in completing the main quest? I'm also finding myself gravely poor all the time, despite my entry into the thieves guild and subsequent theft of anything that isn't nailed down.
Or should I just say fuck it and power through the main quest as fast as possible?
I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but in my quest to make the perfect backstory, I must know
Is there an established reason (preferably in the early game) that you are a prisoner?
You were
Caught trying to pass into Skyrim illegally.
I thought it was more because
the leader of the Stormcloaks was being captured in the area you were crossing, and you were taken under the assumption that you are affiliated with them.
I'm gonna make a Breton Mage-Archer, which was my Oblivion character, or an Argonian fist fighter, which was my Morrowind character.

Or maybe you could re-lock certain locks so that the owners wouldn't know that someone had been in that door/chest/whatever, and with the copy of the key you could get access whenever you wanted.

That would be awesome.
"Yeah, that's my loot. I just keep it in his chest."

I hope it doesn't look awful like in Oblivion if it is in.
You can see it being used in one of the gameplay trailers, the 3 parter they released a while back, it looks fine.

Then probably a female wood elf archer, and a female orc sword and shielder.
Also a big demon looking Argonian with destruction magic.
Same, though I'm going to try and focus on Conjuration and bound weapons.
What's the purpose of that?
I mean..if you picked the lock, it's open, so why would you need another key for it?
To....lock it back up? Leave no trace etc. ?
I have no clue.
presumably, the door/chest would be locked again after a while making itx so you need a key out something. I would love this to be true.
I'd be pretty pissed if I found out someone broke into my house and stole my chest of gold and phat loot, and would want to replace the lock asap
That would be awesome.
"Yeah, that's my loot. I just keep it in his chest."
Well in Oblivion there were a whole load of doors, mainly in castles, that all had the same key to open them.
I always just stole the key from a guard but this provides another way to do it.
Same. At least 2 hours!
And because I am new to this type of game, do wandering animals etc re-spawn after a certain amount of time?
