I'm most likely going to play an argonian that specializes in magic with a bit of light armor and sword and board (since there aren't any spears) and then just play it by ear. Probably end up with insanely high alteration and enchantment or something, I don't know since I just sort of do whatever needs to be done.
I've been trying to convince myself that I'll focus on Conjurations and Illusions, but realistically I'm mostly going to want to set things on fire and strike them with lightning.
I might try Argonian this time. I've never played with them before, and they look really nice from what I've seen of the Skyrim screens. It also makes the lore fit a little better.
I'll be going Bosmer assassin, bow spec, with a side order of magic (most likely illusion, but i'll try them all a little).
Sneak-killing entire dungeons in Oblivion was the only thing that kept my interest in the combat. My usual go-to of Warrior architype bored me to tears in that game. Hell, it bored me in Morrowind too, but I lost interest in that game pretty quick 'cus I don't dig swamps, y'hear?
There are no spears? How do you fight dragons without spears?
There haven't been spears in the base game since Morrowind.
You mean since one game ago? yeah, that wasn't like.. multiple iterations. Also, Oblivion was fucking terrible, so it isn't like I'd use it as a benchmark for progress.
I mean shit, Oblivion didn't have werewolves and such. So I guess they aren't in Skyrim either? Oh wait...
I've finally settled on an Argonian Archer. Obviously that goes against the base skills, but I'm getting the impression it won't matter past the very earliest part of the game.
I can't wait! I can't wait!

Nevermind, someone beat me too it.
Oh well.
Frankly if there were NOT werewolves I would be so upset. Hircine and his chosen are iconic to the Nords. Especially when the border island state in Morrowind basically spells that out for you.

Spears have only been in Morrowind.
I can't remember them being in either Daggerfall or Arena.
The Skyrim main theme better be playing constantly throughout this game. For added effect, the chorus should blare whenever I find myself on a snowy mountaintop, gazing meaningfully out into the distance.
Or maybe you could re-lock certain locks so that the owners wouldn't know that someone had been in that door/chest/whatever, and with the copy of the key you could get access whenever you wanted.
I really like this weapon shop, but the best daggers always seem to disappear from their inventory. Wax key for the win!
I hope this is true.
Edit: Turned in some old games since gamestop was giving a bonus on turn ins to preorder skyrim. I was NOT expecting as much as I got. So basically, I get to walk to the front of the line at midnight and pick up my five dollar copy of the game. ^_^
Lock picking in Oblivion is easy, but it's also tedious as hell. The run I'm playing now, I just took security as a main skill and walk around with 100+ lockpicks and brute force them with auto attempt. It's a lot faster than playing the minigame. I'm glad they're switching to the Fallout version. I never found that one particularly tedious.

I'll be playing a shield-bashing, sword-swinging, ale-drinking, dungeon-plundering Nord. This may change to dual-wielding or two-handed axe-cleaving but that's the initial plan.
Hey guys - I haven't played any previous ES games - I've got a question for how viable a thief character would be.
The game seems combat heavy (obviously.) Warriors can hack their way zombie-infested dungeons, and mages can burn their way through, but if I want to be a sneaky/stabby type, does that work in this game? Can you sneak up on the undead in these games? How does a thief fight a dragon?
ty in advance for any info
Others have touched on this, but also remember that you don't gain experience points for killing stuff outside of the practice you get to your combat skills. As such, it's quite possible and sometimes preferable to avoid enemies by stealth and save the combat for when you need to fight, when you know you can make quick work of an opponent, or if they have loot you want. In Oblivion, I evaded far more Daedra than I actually fought since they didn't really drop anything I wanted for the trouble of fighting them.
And when I did have to fight something face to face (rather rare), it was standard MO to make sure they had more poison than blood in their veins. Making those poisons also had the benefit of making your alchemy skill good and therefore your healing potions quite potent.
Finally, you'll be able to use the money you have from all the burglary and treasure hunting you've engaged in to buy training in combat skills if you need to hit harder or be sturdier in armor. So as long as you don't blow all your cash on skooma and whatever the whore equivalent is, you should be able to prepare for dragons.
I'm probably not fucking around with companions anyway. Every time I bothered with them in FO3/NV I worried about them all the time or they got me into trouble. ("No ED-E, don't go pick a fight against the radscorpion with your tiny laser popgun, NOOOOOO!")
The dragonborn works alone: a lone wolf, a solitary eagle...
My brother is rather remiss that there isn't (we think) multiplayer component. I don't mind, since we have very different styles of play.
The leveling system kind of bothered me when I tried Oblivion, but I'm actually looking forward to getting chest deep into it in Skyrim. I'm not so sure that I'll be doing the poison sneaker build. I'm not a fan of poison in games outside tabletops. Something about it just doesn't convert well, in my opinion. I will most likely go with a high level of enchanting/enhancement. Have magicked gear and weapons, then enhance them six ways from sunday before the sneak attack. :P

My first character will be a Breton Mage who has a giant ego, take anything that can make him quick gold with as little effort as possible, and talks of himself in the first person. He will be called Jim Darkmagic and I will indeed try to play him in character.

Don't forget you need an undead dragon to ride and a half sister to spoon if you're going to pull that off proper.
If you read the article it says it went gold last friday.
And even then, it was already in stores by the time they announced it.

Of course the first mods will be Better Boobs or whatever, but what this game really needs if the Ride a Fucking Dragon mod. If Oblivion had one, Skyrim has no excuse.

I'm sure the first mods will be Better Boobs, Lightsaber, 1 billion gold chest at starting location, and Naked Mod. I don't know if that's the correct order, but it'll be close. Probably the black trenchcoat not far behind..

Then probably go with an Argonian focusing on conjuration and destruction.

Was fun while it lasted.
Least they got the chance to keep it up, just block it from view for now.
So clueless about anything else.
There haven't been spears in the base game since Morrowind.
Fists?
With heart, faith and steel. In the end there can be only one.

I wonder if they'll post a change log. I'm also guessing that this will be a multiplatform patch?

Oh well.
1. Should have been able to attack while on your horse. (At least with a bow.)
2. Your bodyguard should have her own horse.

I saw elsewhere talk of the 360 version having been patched earlier today.

But, going gold means it's done and shipped off to press.
They're pressing copies and sending them out in the next three days? Somehow I don't think so.
Or is this just them changing the term "gold" for their marketing, like "beta." :P
