My 4G Evo that I got over a year ago looks like it's broken. It's not taking a charge (already tried multiple batteries and the charger tested on another phone). What I think happened is that part of the plug from my car charger got lodged into it and then broken, since that plug doesn't seem to fit very well anymore and the charger wouldn't work on another friend's Evo.
So my question is this: Is there any point to taking it to the repair center? Didn't get insurance and I'm guessing the warranty expired/won't cover this. So if I get a new phone, can I get any sort of discount? Signed up for a two year contract and only one year has passed.

Your best bet is to just take it in to a store and ask. You're going to need a new phone either way.
Your question basically boils down to "My phone is broken, should I take it to a place that fixes broken phones?"
The answer to that question is obviously yes. Worst case scenario is your phone is beyond repair. Best case scenario is some guy opens it up, pops out the piece of your car charger that broke off in there, and sends you on your way.
Sometimes, If you're lucky and have taken care of your cell phone bills in a timely manner and have been with your carrier a long time (I know at least Verizon does this), they consider you a "Valued Customer" and become eligible for early upgrades. You can go and get a new phone for the reduced price if you renew your contract. I have been eligible for this twice, and the second time I did not even know until I went to the physical store and they looked up my account. So that seems like your best bet - take your phone to your carrier's store, explain the situation, and see what your options are.
I'm my experience, the micro usb ports on HTC phones are very weak. I had one break on me as well (honestly I think its a very poor design for frequent use applications such as charging in general, but that's another story)
If you can't get a free replacement, you can keep using your phone until your contract is out by charging the battery directly in a special charger.
I personally switched to inductive (wireless) charging for my HTC phone and highly recommend this option if you don't mind spending a little more...
