This has always been my experience with Steam's offline mode sadly.
Some games don't actually need Steam to launch them though so if you navigate through to your steamapps folder and try running a games executable directly from there you might get lucky.

I have found that it's sometimes necessary to put Steam into offline mode manually once while you are connected, that you may play it offline in the future. So, everyone should probably do that.

Yes. Everyone try offline mode at least once (probably once per time you install a game).

I try to go into offline mode periodically on all machines to be safe. After getting burned once by it on a trip, the last thing I do on my laptop before turning it off is putting Steam into offline mode (if I have Steam up). Hmmm, maybe there should be an option in the client somewhere to automatically do something of that sort every time you exit steam (not put it in offline mode, but make sure offline mode is available next time you turn it on).

I wouldn't be surprised if offline mode's functional inconsistency was due to the thought from certain developers that "offline mode" is code for "User A is playing all of User B's singleplayer games without paying for them".

It can be a pain in the ass when your internet goes down or you move and have to wait a few days for your ISP to get you up and running (which I just went through), because it's pretty easy to get locked out of your games if you aren't careful.

I shall be that one man on your playlists not playing Skyrim. Maybe I'll be playing Spacechem. Maybe it'll be Scoregasm. I just installed Beyond Good and Evil for the first time... it could even be that.

    But it won't be Skyrim.

Rest assured all of you who can't play Skyrim and need someone to feel kinship with, or those of you who need to laugh at those less fortunate than you, I am here for you all.

You can install from disc, but you still (probably) have to download a lot of updates.

I once bought a retail box for a Steam game. I tried installing it. It told me that the files were corrupt or something and it was going to download the whole thing from Steam now.

    Yay discs!

You've got horrible luck, man. I've had one corrupt disk since I started buying PC games...maybe it's more common than I expect, but still, horrible man.

I can't help but imagine the rather fantastical scenario that there wasn't anything wrong with your disk, Steam just didn't want you saving the bandwidth, heh.

This is a response to something from 5 days ago, but...

I had this happen with my Skyrim install. I picked up the game at midnight, as I wanted the cloth map and figured the disc install would be super quick anyway. Win-win, right? I put in the disc, and it immediately takes me to the Steam download window. And I'm downloading 5 gigs, not some patch. I took out the disc, restarted Steam, but no matter what clicking the install button just lead me to a Steam download.

So yeah, Steam just didn't want me saving bandwidth.

I forget how to do it, but if you look up "Install from disc" in Steam help, there's a way to force it to install from disc by using run. I thought that, when I tried to install CSS from a disc when I had a super-slow internet connection, but as I said, you can force it.

I was at Target last night getting some medicine for my little one, and swung by the electronics area. Mercifully, Skyrim was sold out. Otherwise I think I would have brought it home, and told my wife they threw it in with the prescription, then hid in my basement in shame as I went dragon hunting.

There really is no reason for anyone to be playing Skyrim right now. It's going to be $10 or $15 bucks on a Steam sale at some point in the future so frugal folks will save their money and wait.

Buying anything full price on Steam is the same as being mugged on the streets.

My backlog (Not my "gamebank") is big enough that I have a lot of older AAA titles to get through while I wait for newer AAA titles to go down to ludicrous prices. More games than time, and I've got a lot of free time.

Not for quite a while really. It'll either be (if it's $40 now), $30, $26.40, or maybe only $36, depending on whether it's 25%, 33%, or 10% off in the Thanksgiving and Christmas sales.

It'll only hit crazy prices next summer.

A good point about the backlog, @Centipeed , but I couldn't resist Skyrim. The rest of my backlog can wait, damn it!

EDIT: What Minor Incident said. It really is a fucking awesome game. Seriously.

Not like that's a bad thing.

We're a mere week and change from blowing through 2 threads in 3 days.

To save some time/pages: if the sale price is $5 or less, we're probably just going to tell you to buy it.

Edit: though that's for older stuff. No, a hot new release will be lucky to see a 10 or 20% discount. I wouldn't expect Skyrim to be much less for some time to come.

With Skyrim "the conversation" is half the fun. Seeing a pack of sabre cats fuck up a giant is fun, but shift-tabbing to go tell @Lord_Snot about it after he relays a story about his latest dragon encounter makes the whole experience even more awesome.

Those pop-ups from friends in the corner saying "holy shit, you won't believe this!" are part of why Skyrim rocks.

Or, you know, people want to experience a game now, not in...16 months. Which is probably the minimum it would take to drop to 15 bucks. It's a mugging when you offer your money willingly to experience something? Do you only shop at the dollar store? Only watch movies you've borrowed from friends? Only eat food that someone else prepared for you? I understand not wanting to pay the full price for a game, but calling others fools and victims seems a bit dickish.

I guess it helps to have no (1 actually) friends who are playing Skyrim, or mostly having almost no friends at all who play games. While waiting for the $10 GOTY of Skyrim in 2013 I will be playing my $2.50 Alpha Protocol.

I think I'll try to pick up Skyrim during the Xmas sale. My research on whether my laptop can handle it has had mixed results. But there is a chance it can, so best case there'll still be discussion going on while I play it, worst case it'll wait in my game bank until I get a new computer.

Sure, but the fun of playing a current game is that a lot of people are doing it and that you can take part in the conversations. This is especially true with Beth titles on PC, because they quickly develop a very active community. And yeah, it really is a cracking game. The UI is balls, but the actual game is fantastic.

The thing about Bethesda titles is that the community tends to stay for a while. Picking it up in a 6-9 months will not hurt your ability to talk about it with people on the internet.

How is the UI different in the PC version? In the 360 previews, it seemed really intuitive, if... list-based.

From what I've seen it isn't different at all and the main complaint is that it makes poor use of screen space.
