Which isn't that far away. You wont be able to "join in on the conversation" like you can with the non stop people playing it now but in 8 months the game will be just as good as it is now and at 50% off.
Sure, but the fun of playing a current game is that a lot of people are doing it and that you can take part in the conversations. This is especially true with Beth titles on PC, because they quickly develop a very active community. And yeah, it really is a cracking game. The UI is balls, but the actual game is fantastic.
How is the UI different in the PC version? In the 360 previews, it seemed really intuitive, if... list-based.
From what I've seen it isn't different at all and the main complaint is that it makes poor use of screen space.
It's fine. I'm sure someone will tweak it and offer a UI mod, but it works a lot better than Oblivion's out of the box. Lots of keyboard shortcuts, which I appreciate.

Part of the problem with the UI on the PC is when you try clicking things in menus or conversations, and instead of selecting the option you're actually pointing at with the mouse, it will usually selected the last highlighted object.
Plus, list based menus can take a while to scroll through when you start getting dozens of items, ingredients, potions and all that.

Yeah I forgot to mention that. It's my biggest annoyance. Luckily it usually just makes an NPC repeat what they just told you.
There really is no reason for anyone to be playing Skyrim right now. It's going to be $10 or $15 bucks on a Steam sale at some point in the future so frugal folks will save their money and wait.
Buying anything full price on Steam is the same as being mugged on the streets.
My backlog (Not my "gamebank") is big enough that I have a lot of older AAA titles to get through while I wait for newer AAA titles to go down to ludicrous prices. More games than time, and I've got a lot of free time.
With Skyrim "the conversation" is half the fun. Seeing a pack of sabre cats fuck up a giant is fun, but shift-tabbing to go tell @Lord_Snot about it after he relays a story about his latest dragon encounter makes the whole experience even more awesome.
Those pop-ups from friends in the corner saying "holy shit, you won't believe this!" are part of why Skyrim rocks.
Haha I was talking to Lord Snot last night and we both killed the same dragon and found the word wall at the same time, even reminded him of the chest there.
and this wasn't planned or anything, complete coincidence. Made so much more awesome because we were chatting at the same time

If you're playing later, I'll be sure to chat you up with tales of my heroism against packs of wild bears and vampire ambushes!

If it's in an XKCD comic, then it must be a super smart idea!
Although my particular method (A 6 month gaming lag) has its downsides: You still need to spend a relatively high amount of money on your PC.

Finally tore myself away from MW3 multiplayer for a bit and decided I would "just watch the intro to Skyrim and then go to sleep." Hours later I'd escaped a dragon, killed various packs of bandits, found the remains of a slaughter at an outdoor shrine, hunted foxes and deer with a bow and arrow, waffled between big weapons and armor and robes and magic repeatedly, and cleared out a dungeon hidden inside a mountain. So tired today. So tired. And yet it was worth it. The game looks beautiful and I've always loved how filled the open worlds are with things to see, do, and appreciate in Elder Scrolls games.
Strange: For some reason people in my contact list was unable to contact me when I was Online. They kept sending me messages through Steam but no warning or chat window appeared in my screen. First I blamed my connection but reinstalling Steam seems to have solved the problem.
yea i tried sending Forar a message last night but it said he was offline despite his page showing him in game
Ive never played Oblivion and I played a bit of Morrowind - and loved it - before I lost the discs. Since I probably cant play Skyrim... how good is Oblivion? Should I pick it up?

Damnit!
Anyway, in regards to Skyrim, as much as I'd like to snag it and be on the cutting edge, I've got Batman due out in a week, so picking up a game that might take dozens or hundreds of hours to finish (to varying degrees of finishedness) seems ill advised. I've already put money down on the former, I figure I can at least wait to see if it shows up in the Winter sale, at which point I might have cleared a little of the backlog up as well.
Edit: Oblivion for $5 seems pretty ideal, might just snap that up anyway. Barring a $1 event or something, I doubt it'll get much cheaper during the big sales.
Forar on

I like it, but my experience with it is basically the beginning couple of hours several times over. I will say this though, Ive apparently spent 2.6 hours playing it and all Ive done in those 2.6 hours is kill 5 fish, a rat, a wolf, a couple crabs, a conjuror guy who came out of nowhere (fuck you and your imp conjuror dude, youve got nothing on me), two highway bandits. Alright, most of that time was spent trying to hunt down the fucking fish (and I still dont have enough dead fish to satisfy the quest I was doing...) but still.
Its enjoyable, and I didnt realize I had spent so much time hunting fish, plus I find it a nice change of pace from BF3.
@APODionysus, did you see my admonition to get over to the build thread like five plus pages back? It got BOTPed. Dunno how long it's been since you were in the market for a desktop, but it might be less than you think to build a Skyrim rig. (Apologies for not linking again. Stupid smartphone.)

Honestly, I find it to be the weakest Elder Scrolls game by far. The world is very samey in a way that makes you feel exploring is not worth the hassle, and most of the quests are pretty boring.

Oblivion is worth it for the Thieves Guild questline alone, IMO. Assassin's Guild questline was great, as well.

Yeah, I saw it, thanks @IoIo. I almost certainly will be active in there when I get closer to purchase time, but first I need to put money aside as my current budget would be.. unh.. zero dollars. Im going to start actively picking up shifts at work and extra shift tips will go entirely into my computer fund. I will still need a fair amount, I think since Im basically starting from square zero (Ill need everything - monitor, case... even a desk). Im shooting for around June since by then I can dump my money on the computer itself and ask for a desk/chair for my birthday.
I'll probably make some feeler posts over there soon, jsut so I can get an idea what my target is - and get some advice on where to learn the actual assembly process

Oblivion is a middle ground between the structure of skyrim and the openness of morrowind.
It also exists in one of the less interesting areas of the world and so the art direction seems kind of bland in comparison to Morrowind or Skyrim. The world isn't uninteresting and is pretty beautiful once you hack the game so it runs as well as it possibly can on new systems (there is a lookout over the capital from one of the mountains and with infinite draw distance its pretty impressive). The main quest is fairly interesting, imo more so than morrowind.
On the down side the mechanics are not good, combat is still as boring as morrowind except its harder to exploit things. The leveling of enemies makes areas ridiculous and annoying in many instances similar to the old cliff racer problem.
Oblivion is probably worth 5 dollars for the main quest as a one and done.
Note: Never played the expansions
Skyrim is(so far) much more impressive

For some reason this is just funny as hell to me.
Ill get skyrim eventually, but not until patches, mods, and price drops hit.
Morrowind gets no love.
yea i tried sending Forar a message last night but it said he was offline despite his page showing him in game
yeah it does! I saw a video of it on RPS a while back, there's a demo too
My friends list this very moment consists of 2 Skyrims, 2 Saints Rows, and a Morrowind.
I find this to be fully acceptable.
I don't know if I could go back to oblivion after spending this much time with skyrim.
Damnit!

Oh damn, I didn't realize that. I'll have to check it out when I get done with some work.

If I ever want to go back and replay it, it'll be much less of a pain.
So that your shame might remain for the rest of eternity.
It'd be nice if they fixed the bugs that make online multi so unstable.
Oblivion is terribad next to Skyrim.
Still might get it though.
Should probly put that 5$ toward Saints Row though.
I will also be down for this. You can invite multiple people to a chat, right?

Well, I'm just a silly goose, and made my Skyrim-specific post in the Steam thread. I'll just see myself out!

Skyrim group chat? It'll be like hanging at the mead hall bragging to our fellow Nords about our exploits as we play!
I just installed Beyond Good and Evil after picking it up in a sale, and its running a mess.
The audio is not synced up with the video at all. Its not even close. So dissappointed. Anyone know a workaround?
