My online gaming experience is extremely limited.

The worst verbal abuse I have been exposed to is on TF2, and even that is pretty tame compared to what I hear about (but have never heard myself) in other games/platforms.

I think a better solution is not to play online FPSes.

Its a rule that has served me well in avoiding angry children, general online trash, and not wasting my time with an over-saturated dull genre of games that get pumped out every few months.

I love playing games with these shitbags. I, much like Jerry, am an asshole and as such I'm unable to be offended by anything these people have to say and I find it pretty goddamn hilarious when they explode over the dumbest stuff. Stuff that I happen to provide. I actively seek these guys out and do everything I can to ruin their day.

Does that make me a worse fuckhead?

If slightly tarnished by Tycho and/or Gabe's recurring pet peeve of a plant, overlapping with distinctly unsavory individuals who are fond of said plant, and whatnot.

That's not even a gripe on my part, FWIW. I've been reading PA since I was eleven years old, I'm used to T&G's little recurring quirks, like that.

It just made me snicker, and go, 'heh', for a second. Barely impacted my enjoyment.

Edit: Because I'm not the one calling the shots on this here webby-comic. But it seemed to me, just for a second, a moment, even, that the dudes called 'NOBAMA_2012' and such loudly informing us how they're going to hang themselves some N-Words, while I'm in MW3 or Reach, are heinous enough to warrant a mute.

They aren't, probably, because I am completely retarded

I often find myself questioning this myself. I mean, as often as it comes up, which isn't terribly often. It's not like PA is campaigning against plant lovers. Just every once in awhile, over years of following the comics and blog, things come up which indicate an anti-plant stance.

At the end of the day, though, I get the impression it's not about the plant itself or the use thereof. It's more about the people that not only enjoy the plant, but seem to base their entire identity around it. Let's face it, even among us mature plant lovers, most of us have gone through a phase where we thought the plant was the coolest thing and we wanted everyone to know.

I personally think the guys are smart enough to know not every plant lover is like the stereotype. Just like most WoW players don't like being associated with the vocal minority that makes up the stereotype, plant lovers suffer the same problem. Most of us aren't so bad, but the loud ones give us a bad name. Like WoW, you would be surprised how many people you know and respect enjoy our past time, because they aren't like the stereotype at all.

This is a humor site though, and stereotypes are a part of humor. If they started writing out disclaimers to their jokes, they'd spend more time on that than on humor. So it's up to us to not be sensitive to it, and realize that guy exists, and we're not that guy, and just hope everyone else is smart enough to realize, we're not that guy simply by association.

As for the racism angle being more important, it's easier to laugh at a harmless if annoying plant lover than it is to laugh at someone so broken they think it's OK to hate other people based on race.

  • AurichAurich ArizonaRegistered User regular
Indeed, these people are largely shitbags. I hear and agree entirely.

They are, however, only shitbags. The racists on XBL are hateful shitbags.

I would not have even blinked, if he had included the hideously relevant topic of XBL racism earning MUTE STATUS.

He has addressed the crazy racists on there before, too, so it made me scratch my head a bit. You can see how it may have given me pause, there.

It really doesn't concern me, though. And I'm certainly not going to split some hairs about it.

    Postscript:

"But Professor, you silly retarded goose, we DO NOT NEED to talk about Racism in Gaming! And neither does Jerry?"

    Nah.

It is a Thing. It is definitely, without a doubt, a Thing, that Needs To Be Addressed. It impacts our community. Everyone should address it. Every single gaming webcomic with a huge community should frequently address the topic, and raise awareness.

As Archimedes said, give me a microphone, and a place to stand at PAX, and I'll open up the convention with, Guys, we need to talk about Racism. On Xbox Live.

The mistake you've made here, and I'm trying to be genuinely informative and not rude here, is thinking The Gents care. I recall a podcast (the one with the cigarette pre-order bonus for the quit smoking game) where Tycho mirthfully mocks the idea of making comics that deliver an important message.

If I may be so bold, and I'm being less polite here (:P), I think you're just ruffled that the weed I suspect you enjoy has been painted in a decidedly ungenerous light.

Yes, but you're OUR fuckhead, a force of evil used for the purposes of good.

Or you could look at it as just feeding the fire burning down your house in an attempt to spite it.

There is deep philosophical shit in this discussion. All I got to say is these 14yr old shitbags, the ones that are spouting shit dirty enough to make a man that fantasizes about ostrich alien tentacle porn (Tycho) cringe, are our FUTURE. They will not grow up. Ever. Because the stupidity they throw at each other just fuels them to greater stupidity, the worlds most destructive perpetual motion machine.

They are our future... we have no hope.

There's a print, which is like a shirt, but unwearable.

On the topic of mute everybody, I tend to play in parties over live which mutes everyone outside and contains my squeals of joy in the cone of awkward silence.

I must admit, I really do love the comic more when Jerry takes the stage.
If they know you’re a girl that gives these monsters an obvious avenue of attack. If you’re just a dude they need to be more, “creative”.

What's the obvious avenue of attack? That they can make fun of you for being a girl? That's fucked up.

If you're a girl, they insult you by calling you a girl. If you're a guy, they insult you by calling you a girl. Ugh.

True, but they could do a remake similar to Tycho's rant on the dark powers he would invoke to get Gabe to shut up about warhammer online. Redo the font, use two pictures to each side, etc.

I see it more as something that the visual design being so uniquely PA that most of us who read the comic would recognize it on sight and get a warm feeling to fill the empty cavities of our souls with memories of better times. The hell with anyone who doesn't get it.

Pretty much the exact same reason that I wear my "I R Epic Fail Boat In Space" shirt. To confound everyone else.

While I would like to believe that he was playing it straight - and, to be quite honest, he wouldn't be the first long-winded, lucid user of substances I have heard of - I think Tycho was being funny when he said that.

He probably wouldn't condone illegal substances on a media outlet he owns.

Condoning the trafficking and usage of controlled, very much illegal substances is hardly the done thing, after all.
