I'll be interested to see Bravely Default gameplay, and that's about it.

No Versus, which is expected and depressing at the same time. That fucking game is never releasing, is it?

Maybe it would be done already if Nomura and his team were actually allowed to work on it till recently, instead of being pushed onto countless other projects and leaving it on the backburner?
At this rate, it'll already be the Swan Song of this generation.

FF Art Director plays Skyrim, is envious: http://www.giantbomb.com/news/final-fantasy-xiii-2s-developers-discuss-feedback-twitter-and-admiring-skyrim/3824/

That's the kind of headline that NeoGAF furiously masturbates to.

But on the upside, it sounds like they really are taking great strides to change their policies. Acquiring feedback from their games as they are developing them, rather than just shut themselves off until said game is finished, is certainly a significant strategy.

Had they done that with FFXIV, it might not have ended up the disaster that it is today.

As for Versus, I'm going to take a guess that they're saving it for E3, making it the game's biggest, content-filled unveiling yet.

Of course that probably also means it won't be out until 2013, which....well it might as well be a PS4 launch title, which it won't be.

Oh my God I hope Square Enix gets better soon.

Ffx was grandia without the positional combat.

    Ffxi was every mmo ever.

Ffxii was ragnarok online, .hack, a wide variety of korean mmos or whatever else. The gambit system was at least squares, but it was lifted from the mana series.

Ffxiii was persona, flat out, up to and including mc death = gameover. Paradigm shift was pretty much just hitting the 'change strategy' button in persona because the characters act vastly different based on their strat.

Tweaking existing systems isn't exactly being creative, which is what I am more or less lamenting. Because it seems whenever they do find something good, they then abandon it to try aping something else in a halfassed fashion. How great could xiii been if they just stuck to the damn x-2 system even.

I'm thinking they said versus would be an actiony game? That should be interesting. Type-0 plays like God Eaters so Ill be curious to see what style they copy for versus.

(Also, crystal bearer had a style to it at least. Not one I can offhandedly label as an imitation. I'm curious if anyone knows otherwise.)

As for xiv, I again blame outsourcing. China style mmo all up ins.

So what? Final Fantasy was a clone game from the start.

The whole series is basically "like Dragon Warrior, but something you'd actually want to play".

Wait wait wait. I know we have next to no details, but people should be freaking out a little at least.

Type 0 is coming to America!

Not to be Buzz Killington, but all we know is that an International Version of Type-0 is almost definitely being worked on. International Versions of Squeenix games tend to be ridiculously named, as they barely go anywhere outside of Japan. So.....

Huh. A direct quote would be nice, I guess, but everything I see says "International" except like one sentence in the Andriasang article. Regardless, I'm not going to believe it until I see an official statement because Type-0 looks way too good and I want it to be a sure thing before I get hyped.

Why would they release an International version before the game has gone international? If they were just re-releasing it without a western release, they'd just call it something else, like Final Mix.

And come on, Type-0 was ALWAYS going to get a western release. It's not a Nintendo game we're talking about, it's Square Enix and Final Fantasy. The question was what platform would it come out on. Chances are, as a PSP exclusive, it'll stay on a Sony system, so that means PS3 or Vita. I'm hoping the latter because fuck the people that always whine about portable exclusives and want them ported to consoles.

Square Enix are capable of some pretty stupid decisions (DQX is still meant to come to Wii after all) but I don't really think that's a possibility. The PSP is dead in the west and piracy is rampant on it. What's the point of even bothering with it? They'll get far more media attention as a Vita exclusive than they would staying on the PSP.

I remember when I was very young, and renting SNES games at the local video store was still a thing to do at the end of the week. I noticed something that said Final Fantasy III with what looked like a little white, squinty koala bear leaning on a dagger like a boss. I figured "what the heck, I'll try it". Life changed forever that day.

FFVI is the game I judge not only other FF games by, but every RPG I play. The only other games that I've come close to having as much fun playing are Super Mario RPG (fucking awesome game) and FFVIII.

If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten in your presence.

This is the absolute best part of the game. See how many hunts you can complete without the final level of the sphere grid (which you gain access to once you've beaten the game), I managed 45.

For all I hate on the FFXIII battle system, its at least serviceable and if 13-2 has a similar one I won't dismiss it on that alone.

What I do hate about 13 is the weapon upgrade system in general. I really dont even know what they were thinking with that.

It was in an interview with a french magazine or something? Since Vagrant Story had a 'middle aged' male lead and didn't do so well, they decided 12 wouldn't do well with a middle aged male lead. So they changed it to Vaan.

yeah, because some unknown game made six years previous didn't do so hot, that decided it had to be changed. Oh square.

All management across the world does that though, not just S-E. "X doesn't do too well with the market, but Y is super hot right now. Add more Y.". Where X could be something stupid like female protagonists, and Y as inconsequential as the colour orange on the bloody box. It's utterly stupid to be sure, but sadly it exists everywhere.

But one of the nitty gritty questions to ask is: just how much of it is actually true? Does the general japanese market really only prefer the androgynous teeny-bopper, or do they only like it because that's what they're told they like?

Not really, a lot of companies spend millions a year on focus group testing and that can greatly affect changes they make to their products.

That being said I can't say one is superior to the other since focus groups depend on the quality of your focus groups.

FFTA2 is actually pretty enjoyable, from a story perspective. The villain is just kinda there, and the FF IX it pulls at the end is annoying, but it's mostly nice, and doesn't try to take itself too seriously.
