The wireless radio on my HP OfficeJet J6480 has apparently died, so I needed to hook it up through wired (ethernet) connection. I plugged the printer into an available port on the router and proceeded to install the printer.
It installed effortlessly on my new MacBook Pro running OSX Lion, and I was able to go through the install process using the software from HP's site to install the printer successfully on my desktop running Windows 7 64-bit (freshly formatted and fully updated).
I went to install the printer on my wife's laptop running Windows 7 64-bit and the process appeared to go fine, but it will not complete the installation. I had it create a shortcut on her desktop so that I could attempt to add the device later, but even running that gives me the same error.
I run the "add a device" shortcut, select wired network connection using an Ethernet connection, it checks the network configuration and finds the printer on the network with no problem. I select it and click next, it runs network diagnostics that don't show any errors, and then goes to the "printer setup - installing your printer" screen. The status bar gets about halfway before a big red X shows up and the windows displays:
"Printer setup has failed to complete.
Clik retry to try installing the printer again or click Next to continue installation without connecting to the printer now, I will connect later."
The first time I tried it I clicked next and it created the shortcut. Now if I click retry it fails again, and if I click next it just closes. The printer does not show up in the Devices and Printers menu.
I don't understand how my desktop and MacBook can see, install, and print to the printer just fine while the laptop cannot complete the installation. I have rebooted the computer and it does not make a difference.
Please help!
