The biggest bummer right here. Me and my friends operate on a strict "Kill each other as much as possible on our way to the goal" policy in NSMB. Well, a specific group of friends do. What I'm saying is I really like the option of being a dick with no consequence to myself.
First pick was +20% xp. Seemed like a no-brainer. I'm eyeing the +2 hp one next. The extra equipment slot looks amazing, but I can grab it muuuch later.
In a game like this with basically infinite xp, I don't think a bonus like that is essential. It helps, of course, but if you're like me and defeat every enemy you come across, it won't matter too much. I haven't really felt underleveled so far playing that way and I'm about 15 hours in.
It's definitely a good idea to grab bonuses like the +2 hp one early on, yeah. The extra equipment slot is a huge boost though..it's definitely a huge advantage early on to have the additional defense from pants plus a neat bonus like +30% attack or so.
There's no clear cut answer, really. The bonuses are all pretty great, in one way or another.

Technically Luigi uses some variety of fox for his leaf powerups, though it has the same functionality as Raccoon Mario. Not sure why, just a weird quirk for that one powerup.

Luigi is given an alternative Tanooki costume in this game, the costume more resembling a kitsune (a Japanese fox) rather than a Tanooki. While most languages, including the original Japanese, call this form Kitsune Luigi, the English translation still refers to it as Tanooki Luigi.

Nintendo’s Senior Localization Manager Nate Bihldorff remembers a happier time for game translations. During a recent interview with IGN on his contributions to Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, he briefly reflects on his experience with Mario & Luigi: Super Superstar Saga -- the first entry in the Mario role-playing game spin-off developed by AlphaDream which released on Gameboy Advance in 2003.
“[Back then] we would actually get final Japanese code and be able to play it and understand how it works and look over the final text. The way things work now is a lot more scattershot.”
In case you're unaware, localizers tackle an important area of expertise in the video game industry. They specialize in the rewriting of Japanese-developed stories, dialogue, and cultural references for an international audience. According to Bihldorff, as Nintendo shifts their resources to accommodate simultaneous international releases -- like the upcoming Pokemon X and Y -- localization and development for a game today often occurs at the same time. Developers submit in-progress builds of a game they're working on, with scenarios that could change the next day.
Despite the new challenges of this process, it’s clear that Nintendo’s internal translation team (named Treehouse) is one of the best in the industry. Each game they localize bears a signature mark of relatable dialogue and clever puns that few competitors can imitate.
AlphaDream's slapstick style helps provide direction. Much like prior entries in the series, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team uses expressive, beautiful sprite-based characters to display a range of emotions. The style and scenarios fit right in with classic episodes of Merrie Melodies or Tom and Jerry. In Superstar Saga, Luigi masquerades as Princess Peach and covers his face to hide his bushy mustache from suspicious enemies. In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Luigi loses a battle to his younger newborn self. Both scenarios use exaggerated gestures and reactions to convey the comedy.
But how often does Bihldorff have to re-create characters because of the significant cultural divide? He told us it’s actually quite rare. “Conceptually, all the characters are generally just one tweak away from being awesome. It’s a matter of making it fit better.” To illustrate his point further, he uses two characters from Dream Team, called the Massif Brothers, as an example.
“We ended up making them have these crazy meathead Russian accents. They certainly weren’t Russian in the Japanese. It was actually born out of the fact that there are scenarios involving them flexing their muscles and screaming out these massive punchlines that are giant letters, maybe four Japanese characters wide,“ Bihldorff said.
“The text was so big that these punch lines had to be really short. I ended up landing on that accent because the Russian accent can truncate sentences so much just by removing articles and entire sections of normal English. As it turned out, with their mustaches, they kind of looked like classic Russian strongmen anyways, so it fit naturally. They were already meatheads in the Japanese [version]. We just changed them a little bit to fit our language.”
Nintendo Treeshouse translations often contain contemporary dialogue and subtext to add flavor to some of their characters, but then what’s the biggest challenge when writing for an RPG like Dream Team?
“With an RPG, you have so many ancillary characters. You have to get a unique personality in them with five messages. They have a message when you first meet them, a message when you complete chapter two, a message when some other event happens, an end of game message, and that’s it, “ Bihldorff said.
“That’s their whole personality. Keeping them interesting enough that people will want to go up and talk to them – especially the modern gamer who maybe doesn’t feel like they have time to talk to everyone – 'Send me to the next dungeon, man, I don’t have time for this' – keeping dialogue appealing for that guy is a constant challenge in localization.”

I'm liking the game, but can anyone tell me if the music improves?
The music in the desert area was the only music in a Mario game I've really had get on my nerves.

I'm not a big fan of that track either but other than that, the soundtrack is great, imo. The song that plays during battle is catchy as hell.
On the localization of dream team: I always play games set to their language of creation. For Dream Team, I gave the localization a shot, and it's really, really good so far! Quite charming in fact, I'd advise you to give it a try. That's only referring to the german translation of course, haven't tried out anything else.

I played Superstar Saga and parts of Partners in Time in German and it was incredible, the localization team did a fantastic job. Shitty translations are so abundant these days that it's great to occasionally find a real gem like this.

Why can't they make a game like Mario & Luigi for Wii U? It's a shame their flagship home console doesn't get some of this crazy imaginative Mario RPG shenanigans.

3D is automatically turned off during that sequence, by the way (I think someone here or in the 3DS thread was asking about that).

Eat that, dirty American pigdogs! (mwhuahahahaha)
It is an odd game, but lots of fun.
Currently playing: GW2 and TSW
In retrospect, I should've probably gone with +1 additional attack at every level up, but the additional equipment slot was just too good to pass up.

Because once again, localization team thinks we are morons :P
"Well, they know what a Tankooki is because someone dropped the ball with Super Mario Bros 3, but clearly they can't know what a Kitsune is!!"
Honestly I'm surprised they didn't just label him "Ninetails Luigi" or something :P
