My wife's computer useage and mine interfere enough that I'm going to build her a new computer. One of the things she does is works for Le Leche League (LLL), a non-profit organization. It turns out through LLL she has access to this:
$8 is considerably less expensive than $100 (newegg's price for xp), but this product at TechDoc is not a full license, it's an upgrade license.
I've never worked with a windows "upgrade" disk before. It seems that the "upgrade" disk requires that a previous version of windows be installed on the computer. Am I reading that correctly? If so, how "installed" does it have to be? W98 is a real pain to install, could I potentially just stop after I get to that "hey, here's your OS with no video drivers installed" windows screen and then install XP over that?
Where can a feller go to get a 98 or ME license?

IIRC, every version of Windows up to and including XP doesn't require that the old version be installed to use the upgrade, just that you have the key from the old version. Vista is different and crappier.
I guess you could try eBay for a 98 or ME license? Neither is supported by MS anymore, so I doubt you can buy them new.
