So I made a new character. I'm mainly thinking of taking him in a kind of ranger direction. He archery and sneak, to try to thin out the opposition to make it easier to carve them up with dual blades, which I've found to be pretty fun, as its a mix of stealth and stand up combat. My question is, since I'm not focusing on pure stealth (im not even bothering with backstab, I just want sneak attack on arrows) and that the main focus of the guy is dual swordplay, should I be wearing heavy armor instead of light? I find that I take a lot of damage in stand up fights, mostly against boss type characters. I got obliterated by a certain spectral draugr and had to turn the difficulty down to take him out.
I started investing into light armor and the light armor part of the smithing tree, but I'm worried I'm taking it in the wrong direction. Keep in mind that I've done the mage college and companion quests with a different character, so I'm thinking about doing the bard college, thieves guild and maybe even dark brotherhood with this new guy. I guess the good news is if I do change my mind I can fix it via console.
Heavy armor is fairly impractical with sneaking. Also, the stamina penalty kind of hurts. In light armor you can invest more in health.
One issue I've found with light armor is that if you are playing properly, it levels up super slow due to not getting hit very much. Resolve by training it often.

With the perk in sneaking to reduce sound, and the Heavy armor perk to eliminate weight and stamina loss you can get your cake and eat it too. I did all of the thieves quest missions silent as can be and wore dragon plate the whole time.

Hollllllyyyy shit. This game is much harder, when you aren't slinging spells around. First dragon I fought kicked my ass until I started creeping around in the rocks above it.
Only thing that saved me was that apparently I had put so many arrows into its wings, that it couldn't take off. So it just snorted and paced around, randomly roasting the rocks to try and root me out, while Lydia recharged to a sliver of health and harassed it from behind.
Was decidedly badass, however. And now I have a new shout.
Which on that note, I have to ask about a shout, how does
Animal Allegiance work? Does it create an animal to fight for you? Or does it make nearby animals come to your aid? The shout makes it seem like it summons one.
God, I want to like this game; to love it even. But the combat! Oh, the lamentable combat.
If someone could only transplant the visceral excitement of battle from, say, Dead Island into Skyrim, I would be forever consumed. But until then? I will keep a safe distance, appreciating the fine detail and polish from afar, awaiting the day when striking an opponent elicits a reaction one might expect from such an action.
I'm not sure if I can stand by your argument if you're using Dead Island as your example. I mean the only thing it has that Skyrim doesn't, is a near realistic damage model for enemies. Otherwise I can stagger enemies, 'dodge' out of the way, perform directional based power attacks. Can BLOCK that you can't do in Dead Island, plus you can do an attack whilst blocking to force an enemy to be staggered.
And this is just bread and butter melee.
Except I hit an enemy and they.. stagger. Or stagger. Or stagger. Or possibly stagger. Maybe they'll even stagger if I crit!
Dead island things actually responded to what you hit them with, crumpling this way and that, losing limbs and generally being actually affected by what you were bludgeoning them with.

Re: conjuration - Again, just sit there casting soul trap on a corpse with a spell in each hand. I literally went from 10 conjuration to 100 in about 20 minutes, maybe less.

I'm doing ok with sneaking and heavy armor, although starting out its tough. Reasonably certain there's a stone that can help with the weight of your armor, not sure if it affects sound. I can see a strong argument for taking the light armor side and using the console to just give you daedric for the weapons though. Personally, I'd recommend going heavy armor, and using a set of theives guild armor if you really need to be sneaky (and aren't expecting combat).

By about level 30 most smiths and the occasional "trinket" vendors usually have 6-10 on them at any given time. Prior to that, yeah, you're usually going to see 2-3 tops in the 20's or so. Prior to that you're probably SOL for ebony ingots. But unless you just powered up Smiting off the bat you won't need them then anyway.
One annoying thing about Daedric armor is that none of the damn vendors have ebony ingots. THE JERKS!
The chick in Whiterun usually has a lot.
So does the dude in Riverwood.
It's random sometimes but they tend to be the most consistent.
Prior to me getting Daedric I saw it all the time, now that I had it I had to run around and nickle and dime the amor mats from general vendors! Also because I had chested my previous set of armor while out looking for some ebony ingots and being half armed an ancient dragon swung in to say hello.

I just wish you could cast at least cast a left-handed spell while using a two-handed weapon. My two-hander spellsword in Oblivion was really fun, and one of the only ways I could have fun as a mostly melee fighter.
I'm really loving dual wielding so far. Hated it, until I realized you could use both weapons at once to do some sort of crazy "maul the shit out of the enemy" attack.
That reminds me, do dual daggers benefit from the 1h dual wielding perks? I've heard rumors that they don't.
Not to mention location damage didn't really stop Fallout 3's combat from being boring either.
Well it made it really easy to be awesome until broken steel added ridiculous bullet sponges that you had to vats shoot the f out of repeatedly in the face with the best weapons to make a damn dent.
But its a different game entirely from morrowind using a different system based on a different franchise. And Dead Island while I love it so was entirely a combat based RPG, thats all it has going for it, the rpg mechanics and weapons are mehtastic for the most part and the story entirely laughable.
Also F3/NV/Dead Island are about Half the length of Skryim with probably half the total size of the continent.

Same with the Orc chick in Markarth, etc. Long story short, you should, in a matter of less than 20 real minutes, be able to purchase all the ebony you need for a full Daedric set, providing you have the coin.
Well, FO3 could have been a lot better with competent AI and actual challenging fights requiring the locational based damage. Instead of just basically headshotting everything, all the time, erryday.
And come on, saying those games are 'half the size' or whatever is ignoring the fact that the people who did the work on the modeling and terrain and such probably never even saw the combat code. Those were all monkeys in a different room and they've had several games to refine it to ... something.

They do not. In fact, dual daggers are, from what I can tell, a playstyle you're intended to use for any real combat. Equip two daggers and do the power attack with no points in the dual wield perks. Then, equip a sword in your right hand and a dagger in your left, then power attack again. The speed difference is enormous, and the dual wield power attack becomes lightning fast with points in the perk for it.
The DW power attack with daggers is useful, though, because you can get up to three bonus damage sneak attacks with it if you can get the power attack off right; I've killed a 900 HP draugr with that alone, and I have under 50 One-handed with absolutely zero perks in the tree.
When shit gets real, though, I pull out a sword I keep around and dual wield that way for the faster power attacks and main-hand damage. If shit gets Multiple Bears, I'll pull out a shield I found that has a block bonus enchant.

Because that was always a feature of Fallout 3, Fallout 3 and NV also have vats to specifically help you in doing that.
I know they where sort of replicating the feel of turn based combat in fallout ("shoot for the eyes!!") with the whole VATS thing...
My point is they had the know-how in the organization to implement that in the underlying engine, so in the elder scrolls they have specifically decided to maintain the D&D style of simple hit points and critical hits. Interesting choice...

It's really baffling to me how people say they hated the other TES games but like Skyrim. Really the only two things that are better than Oblivion to me are the unique dungeons and the less min/max required leveling system. Beyond that they're largely the same. Certainly not so different where I can grasp hating Oblivion but loving Skyrim.
While I actually liked oblivion, I was still disappointed by it. So far, I find skyrim to be much better. I think part of it is that the atmosphere is just so much better than oblivion, it feels more like morrowind in that regard. Really minor detail that I liked: when I first walked into a mine, it actually felt like the mines in morrowind. There were miners in there working. It looked just like the mines from morrowind, with the scaffolding and everything. In oblivion, you couldn't tell the difference between a mine and a regular old cave.

You should try Storm Call. I don't know if the ranking has anything to do with it, but I got its second word and it's fuckin' awesome. Bit of a long cooldown, but if it isn't awesome causing an immediate terrential downpour.

Now I just roll through dungeons like Link in Wind Waker.

Really? I'm only level 27 atm but I've run into at least two smith vendors (Makarth and Whiterun) that sell ebony. Although it's only one ingot each.
Only downside is that to get there, you either need to be a sneaky thief, or run through a quest first.
Or just go all rambo on the place, and butcher the innocents that own it.
Because that was always a feature of Fallout 3, Fallout 3 and NV also have vats to specifically help you in doing that.
