X360 Headset and Ventrilo

My wow guild uses Ventrilo 2.1 as their server for server configuration reasons, this of course means we have to use the 2.1 client.
I have the Xbox 360 wireless reciever and headset. It works fine in windows. Input, output, it's all fine. I can hear, I can record etc. Ventrilo 2.3 works, (as far as I know). I have the realtek ac97 sound card otherwise.
When I connect with 2.1, I can hear the other people through the headset, until I try to use ventrilo. Be it by hitting the PTT key, or even clicking Setup. Then the program hangs, and will not close. In fact, you can't even end the process from the Task Manager. It does this both when i have all sounds going through the headset, and when I have the windows output to the sound card and ventrilo to the headset.
Any ideas on why this is or even where I can start troubleshooting?
