Video encoder

I'm looking for a program to convert Fraps footage from a game to something I can put on youtube, I've been using any video converter but no matter what settings i play with it will not use more than 25% of my cpu (first it was only one core now its 1/4 of each core)

I know very little about video encoders so I'm not sure if that's normal or what

    Virtualdub.

    Virtualdub.
In fact, you can do screen capture with it. No need for any silly FRAPS stuff.

I guess more specifically XviD is a good codec.

Really? I've been looking to ditch fraps forever thanks!

Well, when you're ready to convert your movies for uploading. When you're actually recording, you'll want to record using a lossless codec like this one (you could record without a codec at all, which lowers CPU usage, but you'll get a massive AVI out of it).

Here's a guide to recording with VirtualDub if you need help figuring it out: http://www.genadmission.com/vdubguide.html

I think I'm doing something wrong, but virtual dub is taking up approx. 100MB/second of hard drive space and taxing my system (2500k @ 4.5ghz, geforce 560ti, 6gb ram, ssd primary drive) beyond the breaking point, and it only records blackness with no audio in games

I can't change any settings because virtualdub simply crashes

Edit: it doesn't help there's very, very little on the internet about this, near as I can tell everyone uses fraps and virtualdub to convert the output, instead of directly recording with virtualdub. I can follow the guide up until "Video->Capture Filter" at which point it crashes

I'd say its less of a headache just to buy a rack of 2tb hard drives but they seem to have increased in price to that of a human kidney

Sounds like the VH Screen Capture Driver isn't working very well. You could try the MSU thing The Anonymous linked.

If a game records as a black screen, you have to record it in windowed mode. It's partly because of the way DirectX works, and partly because of the way VD does screen capture. Also, recording without a codec will greatly reduce CPU usage - as I've said before, the tradeoff is a larger filesize (though if you're recording to a separate drive, which is the recommended way of doing things, that's largely a moot point).
