Anyone knows when Skyrim is gonna be released in Japan? Some pages point to December 8th.

Thoughts on how will it do.

I think it'll do fairly well, maybe around 30K-40K units at launch and somewhere north of 100K lifetime.
If you speak English though, I'd stick with the western release though. The localization of Fallout: NV (both translation and VA) was pretty much total shit; at one point I even ran into untranslated English dialogue.

Only a minority of people have my reaction. I can't even figure out why because I've never had problems like this with any game in my entire life, so it's as equally as frustrating simply because I don't know why it happens as the fact it happens in the first place.

Happens to me because my right eye has a stigma.

For some reason I can watch 3d movies in the cinema okay, but the 3ds? Not even 30 seconds. Not even 10 seconds. Instant headache.

Yeouch. The Japanese distributor (I'm assuming it wasn't just Bethesda, but I have no idea) fucking dropped the ball there. It's one thing to have a buggy goddamn game, but that's...just surprising.

But 3D honestly does have an overall positive effect on gameplay, just like it does in real life.

I've never seen this and in fact I've found it precisely the opposite: Highly distracting (especially when moving objects are involved) and actually makes life more difficult (Killzone 3 was just... I don't want to think about it). My problem with this is that our brains are pretty much already hardwired in such a way they can estimate things like distance in 2D - otherwise nobody would ever be able to jump accurately or effectively in Mario 64*. Once familiar with the controls, I don't need 3D to tell me how far away a jump actually is and frankly, from playing Super Mario 3DLand I found 3D more detrimental than anything else. This is aside from any headache or similar issues.

*Or the numerous "3D" tricks involving 2D art, such as a wonderful street drawing I saw once that made you feel as if you were falling down a several hundred feet waterfall despite only being painting on the ground.

The effect is pretty nice. I tend to think of the 3D as visual garnish, on par with something like parallax scrolling or mode 7.

There's also the simple fact that the 3ds allows you to play without 3d, which means that the games need to be perfectly playable both with and without it, keeping a developer from making a game that will really depend on 3d effects.

The main reason it can never affect gameplay significantly is because it can only ever be utilized exclusively as long as nothing is moving on the screen. As soon as the camera moves, you notice that closer objects move faster than farther away objects (parallax) and the visual effect is not needed.
There are sections in Mario 3D Land where it switches to an orthogonal view, and there is no parallax, and depth perception is the only way to tell whether that cloud is above you or in front of you. They're all in bonus sections, it's never necessary to progression, but that's one way to really ram home what 3D can do.

Right, that's basically the only direct application for it, and even then they purposefully put big buttons in these rooms to change perspective so that people who can't see in 3D can still get through them.

And I wouldn't call them shining examples of the limits of the medium or anything, they're just little bonuses.

Imagine a Vita version where the only way to unlock characters would be with single use codes that could only be gotten when buying memory cards.
And the only way to get Kratos, Jak, Ratchet or any other A-list characters would be by getting the 32 GB cards. :rotate:

Oh snap, the French might be ready to kick some ass.

    http://www.pcinpact.com/news/67318-ufcque-choisir-plainte-editeurs-jeux-video.htm
After the abuse of mobile operators or pay private copying, UFC-Que Choisir addresses another area: video games. No, the association does not turn into Families of France and does not want to eradicate violent games. The UFC wants the contrary, we respect the players by improving their user experience. Complaints were filed against three retailers
    and four game publishers.

After making two calls for evidence this year received nearly 560 responses, the consumer protection association has focused its attack against the publishers of video games on four points:

    - Bugs: "The increase and prevent malfunctions, so unacceptable, the normal use of video games: unexpected shutdown (the freeze) obliging the consumer to start from the last level reached, or worse, need to start the game fully due to a backup system failed. "

The UFC note that this review focuses primarily Electronic Arts (27% of stories), but Ubisoft (12%), Activision (11%), Bethesda Softworks (7%), id Software (5%), Atari (5%) and Rockstar (5%) are not far behind.

    - The additional content: "The publishers sell dearly what amounts to simple demos need to supplement with paid content. "

    - Internet in single player, if for multiplayer, it is understandable that the Internet is necessary for the single player mode, the UFC is questioned, especially for a simple activation. Of course, this allows you to download updates (especially for bugs, see first point), but the association noted above a "lax publishers' servers, which are far from efficient.

"Indeed, the connection failures (inability to connect for several hours) have been reported spontaneously by almost 13% of consumers c. 10% of them are explicitly platform Steam. "

    - The DRM and the second hand market: they have generally been removed in the music industry, except when it comes to location, the DRM is increasingly present in video games, even those purchased. This weapon supposedly anti-piracy is actually an anti-gun event.

"This practice is intended to kill the second hand market because the consumer who buys a set of second hand should invest in a new activation code making the game and gained as much as a new set. The UFC-Que Choisir has also found that this limitation is often not or poorly specified when purchasing the game, either on the box when it comes to buying a physical or on the website of e-tailer in the case of a purchase from a distance. "

According to the association, the game has to be especially mentioned the hundreds of testimonials received are Battlefield 3, Call of Duty Black Op, Dead Island, Fallout New Vegas and Rage. - An investigation of the DGCCRF and complaints

Faced with such a finding, the association decided to take action and file a complaint against three retailers and four game publishers "for deceptive business practices, regarding the information on single-use codes of access to certain elements of the game. "

The UFC has also contacted the DGCCRF to investigate this subject it to "determine the extent of problems (frequency and seriousness) faced by consumers."

Now we have more thoughtful, reasoned analysis on the profitability prospects of the Star Wars MMO from a seasoned analyst.

...did I say "seasoned analyst?" I meant "the rantings of Bobby Kotick."
Activision Blizzard (ATVI.O) Chief Executive Bobby Kotick told Reuters that stores may face a shortage of its new children's game this holiday season and tried to cast doubt on a rival's upcoming game that analysts say could eat into Activision's user base.

Activision, the biggest U.S. video game publisher by market capitalization, has been riding the success of its top franchises, "Call of Duty" and "World of Warcraft," but now analysts and investors are concerned about its lack of diversification.

Investors are closely watching the company's new franchise investments for the next hit it can cash in on over coming years.

Shares of Activision are down 5.5 percent year-to-date while shares of its main rival, Electronic Arts (ERTS.O), are up 27.2 percent. On Monday, Activision Blizzard shares closed trading 41 cents higher at $12.16 per share on the Nasdaq.

Speaking at the Reuters Media Summit on Monday, Kotick took subtle digs at rival EA, continuing the trash talking between the two companies that began after EA said its "Battlefield 3," game would challenge the latest "Call of Duty" installment in the fall.

Not unlike with "Battlefield 3," EA is trying to steal market share from one of Activision's big games by releasing its own multiplayer game based on the "Star Wars" movies on December 20. "World of Warcraft," Activision's most profitable franchise, generated $1 billion in revenue for the company last year.

Kotick not only downplayed the notion that EA could steal users from "World of Warcraft" but also questioned whether his rival would make money off the "Star Wars" game since it has to pay Lucas Arts for the licensing rights.

"Lucas is going to be the principal beneficiary of the success of Star Wars," Kotick said. "We've been in business with Lucas for a long time and the economics will always accrue to the benefit of Lucas, so I don't really understand how the economics work for Electronic Arts."

EA declined to comment but has said previously that the game would become profitable if it reaches 500,000 subscribers.

Kotick also emphasized how hard it is for a company to pull off a successful multiplayer game, which involves sophisticated technology that allows thousands of people play together at one time.

"If you look at the history of the people investing in an MMO and achieving success, it's a small number," Kotick said.

But analysts do not necessarily share Kotick's viewpoint.

According to a research note by Lazard analyst Atul Bagga, "Star Wars: The Old Republic," which EA has reportedly spent $100 million on, could attract 1.5 million to 2 million subscribers, which would qualify as a major success for EA.

Moreover, Bagga added in the recent note that between 3 million to 4 million "World of Warcraft" players may buy EA's new game.

Declines in "World of Warcraft" subscribers have worried investors. In November, the company raised its earnings forecast but its shares fell after the company said it had lost 800,000 "Warcraft" subscribers.

Kotick said that Activision's new holiday video game, "Skylanders," has outperformed expectations and may sell out in the United States this holiday season.

"(Skylanders) are in high demand. Retailers across the board are concerned that they will be out of inventory well before Christmas," Kotick said.

Activision might not be able to replenish supplies of the game in time to take advantage of the holiday rush.

"There's nothing we can do because they are made offshore and we can't get product made that quickly," he said.

At least one of the Toys R Us, Target and Best Buy stores in New Jersey were sold out of the Xbox version of the game last weekend, according to Brean Murray analyst Todd Mitchell.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/11/29/us-media-summit-activision-idUSTRE7AR1ZY20111129

Actually, he does raise a good point: unlike most other MMOs, the profits (if any) in this case are divided at least two ways.

Love how Kotick implies that EA doesn't have the "sophisticated technology" required to keep tons of people connected at once. Classy.

Word from the SWOR beta has been quite positive, and I don't doubt that the game will do quite well for the first couple years at least. I suspect it's going to find it a challenge to keep long-term subscribers, though. From all accounts, the story aspects of the game are its main strengths, i.e. the most lengthy and expensive parts of the game to develop. There's nothing particularly special about the combat system, and I'm not sure how long it'll keep the attention of PvP-types. If the SWOR team attempts to replicate what a lot of MMO developers do post-launch, focusing on providing challenging end-game combat scenarios, I'm not sure it'll work. They're going to need to provide more of that delicious, delicious story for players to eat up. Will they have the time and resources to do so? We'll see.

No you see Activision singlehandedly (Bob himself) designed, developed, implemented and maintained World of Warcraft before Blizzard came in with a big money offer and pretty much stuck their name on the box, before going on to claim all the credit for Activision's hard work. As such, Bob and Activision are the only developers in gaming history who are qualified and stable enough to run any kind of MMO.

That's.. that's the truth of it, right?

edit: it's true, he was indeed in Moneyball.
