It's an original story using the Holy Grail War as a foundation. It was VERY good.

The one complaint I have about the Vita version of F/SN is that for some reason the new opening for Heaven's Feel spoils several of the surprises in the route. I don't know why whoever was directing the new openings thought that was necessary (the other openings don't really spoil anything if you haven't played the game before) but ooookay. Bah. At any rate, it's really about time that somebody got around to officially translating SOME version of that game, because come on. The audience is clearly there with how much people are talking about Fate/Zero right now! Also, regarding the Tsukihime remake: at least Type-Moon is actually working on the game now, which means it might actually come out within our lifetime. I don't think the lack of voice acting negatively impacts the original game, personally, and I also think that last I heard of the remake there were no voice actors planned right now. I don't think they directly said there wouldn't be voice acting, but there are certainly no indications that it's getting put in yet. Especially since Mahoutsukai no Yoru didn't have voices either, to my knowledge. And that definitely didn't come out very long ago... So I don't think Type-Moon is as big on voices as a lot of fans are.
That otome game actually seems like it could be pretty good... always a big fan of visual novels with extra gameplay elements, so I might check it out when it shows up. One weird thing about the art is that I thought a couple of those love interests were actually female and possibly villains/rivals/friends of the main character. :P I mean I know girly guys in otome games isn't really a new thing, but given the different art style (which I think I like) I wasn't expecting to be confused by anybody's gender. Clearly I am too optimistic.

Fate/Extra reportedly did pretty well in sales too. I'd hope Aksys opts to capitalize on their success with VNs and F/E and combine the two to get Fate/Stay Night localized, but it's a hail mary and a half.
Wasn't the PC version fan translated? (And isn't it kind of an eroge?)
The PC translation is the only one I'm aware of, and it uses a fan patch to include voice acting/CG/other effects from the PS2 version. Which of course means there's no voice acting during the sex scenes.
The sex isn't copious, and kind of its own thing, although they are relevant to the storyline (in an albeit shoehorned way, not counting Heaven's Feel, which is actually a central part of one character's story).
By all accounts the sex-free versions are sillier since they replace those scenes with magic dolphins or some nonsense. Regardless, it's a trade-off I can live with if it means getting one officially localized version (Vita).
I don't think the odds are that low since VNs are quickly becoming big in the West, and Fate/Zero is getting a dubbed release, so it's not some niche unknown title.
Yes to both. There is an English patch for the PC version and each route has a couple of sex scenes. They've also released a PS2 version in Japan called Realta Nua with the sex scenes removed and added voice over featuring the voice actors from the anime.

As far as I'm concerned, there would only be one thing standing in the way of F/SN's Playstation Vita translation getting done: the Playstation Vita.

Actually, I think the Vita's current software drought will HELP it get stuff like Realta Nua localized. Look at the current state of the PSP; only niche publishers are still supporting it, and how. It might even outlive the DS, if it hasn't already.

Yeah, you do have a point there... tons of visual novels still showing up in English for the PSP. Hopefully the Vita will be at least as successful as the PSP was so that it does get that kind of support! I mean, the Japanese publishers sure are happy to make stuff for those consoles, at least. I could be convinced to buy the Vita primarily as a visual novel machine. That could definitely happen to me.
As far as upcoming notable VNs, not counting that bomb one (is the pig supposed to be someone from Capcom?), I believe the current list includes:
Fate/Stay Night (Vita)
Fate/Hollow Ataraxia (translation)
Tsukihime Remake
Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient
Phoenix Wright HD Trilogy iOS (where is this???)
Saya no Uta localization
Higurashi: When they Cry (Steam Greenlight, though some reports say it's an inferior version or something. might be patchable like the PC version of F/SN)
That Mental Patient VN inspired by Katawa Shoujo (but not made by 4 Leaf)
Nope, still pending. In fact, none of the stuff I voted for has gotten Greenlit. I'm not sure how long the process usually takes.
I have no idea how many versions of Higurashi there are. I watched half of the anime, but apparently that's also inferior to the "best" version (whatever that is).

The visual novel, the anime, and the manga, I think that's it.
More often than not, when the VN comes first, the VN is definitive. Adaptations range from really good(Steins;Gate) to decent(Higurashi) to absolutely horrible(Umineko).

I haven't played Higurashi (yet!), but I believe the missing music has been an issue with the previous (non-Greenlight) English version of the game. Basically, the different rules between countries governing 07th Expansion's right to commercially use some of the free music they used in the Question arcs meant that when the game came out in the US, they couldn't use some of the original tracks (which were legal to use under Japanese copyright). So that's cool. Also, the best version of Higurashi would probably be anything with the PS2 sprites since the original art has always been kind of... special... There's a patch out for the current PC version that replaces the default sprites with the PS2 sprites, and a patch that replaces the default music with the tracks from either the original Japanese version or the PS2 version. I guess some sounds were also changed, and hey, there's a patch for that too. Patches for everyone!
Also I know entirely too much about these things.

I know what you mean by 'special', but even though Ryukishi can't draw anatomy to save his life, he is very good at expressions. He seems to have improved a lot if Rose Guns Days is any indication.
So in other words, if Higurashi gets Greenlit, we can patch in the missing music and improved character portraits with no issue. Good to know.
I really would love to see more VNs released on Steam, and even more so on iOS. I wait for the day someone makes a VN specifically designed for an iPad, allowing you to zoom in on artwork, drag around text, manual bookmarking, and so on.
This is probably old news to most fans, but anyone who has played Fate/Stay Night but hasn't checked out the prequel Fate/Zero should absolutely do so by whatever means they prefer.
Some swear by the novel, which is apparently fully translated somewhere, but I have to push the anime adaption, not only since it's easier to find (and will soon have a dub release) but because the animation is simply outstanding. Some of the best I've ever seen, in fact.
I just started the second half, but this scene from the first half will always remain one of my favorite moments in anything, forever.
Motherfucking best Fate character ever right here.
I also bumped this thread wondering if there were any notable horror VNs worth checking out, besides Corpse Party, Saya no Uta and Higurashi (I'm waiting for Steam to possibly Greenlight the last one).
They don't necessarily have to be supernatural or violent, just anything that invokes a sense of dread and keeps you on your toes.
That's a hell of a find, and with artwork by the artist behind Lain? No way I'll pass that up.
Do you know how long it is, though? Just like to know ahead of time how much of a commitment each VN would take.
I've also recently reached the point in Fate/Zero where nothing but bad things are happening. Oh, this character is filled with joy and appreciating life? Time for suffering!
Looks like an interesting bit of occult fun; thanks for the tip. Only 9 hours remaining on the download.
I also played Fate/Extra recently, but didn't think it was amazing. The combat system was more solid than it appears at first glance, with some fairly brutal bosses (if you're not using Saber) and many of the special attacks were nicely presented.
On the other hand, the story is quite bare compared to FSN or Zero. I liked the prologue and the main plot just about gets the job done without feeling like a cash-in and it showed some original ideas, but the world(s) never quite feel fleshed out properly.
It certainly wasn't bad though and I have put almost 100 hours into the game with the 3 characters.

Btw, as a side note on Yoshitoshi Abe, apparently his main gig these days is a manga called Ryushika Ryushika
It's essentially his take on a happy little kid slice-of-life manga like Yotsuba.
It is sometimes delightful and sometimes sort of a 6-year-old's take on existential horror. It's quite a thing.

Wow, sounds great.
It's crazy to think no one's picked up Despera, or the director hasn't come back, or something.

I really think Saber's the hardest character as she has the weakest defenses. Caster has her awesome guard spell and Archer has his more powerful but more costly guard, and the very powerful debuffs.
Saber is also stubbornly straightforward while Caster has pure battlefield control and Archer does his two turns of setup and then tells the final boss 'okay, you die in one single turn now' and does just that.
When Christine Love writes, you should probably listen. She’s proven incredibly capable of spinning choice-powered yarns around love and hate, weaving in themes of misogyny, history, the ramifications of technology, and many more with a deft, personal hand. Seriously, if you’re not convinced, go read Kieron (pre-vengeful virtual ghost state) and Alec’s respective write-ups of Digital: A Love Story and Analogue: A Hate Story. Then join me after the break for the first details on There’s Not A Pre-Subtitle This Time: Hate Plus.
But OK, the title is still kinda long. This time around, the full thing’s Hate Plus: Mute’s Golden Days. It’s a direct sequel to Analogue, too, so expect more ships, AIs, and divisive art styles. Love explained:
“Hate Plus is a sequel to Analogue: A Hate Story that continues directly from the end of that game, and explores, over the course of three days, the events leading up to year 0. If Analogue was the backstory of *Hyun-ae, then Hate Plus is the backstory of *Mute. It plays similarly to Analogue, but instead of your AI companion simply showing you files they’ve picked, you’ll have to investigate yourself, and discover what happened together.”
Is it a case of different endings you can see immediately, one after another, or does it require a whole new playthrough for each one?
Nothing a quick load and a few minutes can't get you. I got them all within an hour.
And Fate is great so far. I can already tell how people who saw Zero afterward would be going crazy. Surreal to play them in the 'right' order, I imagine. I'm glad I'm playing this after, in a sense, so I can see what becomes of Sakura and Kotomine.

A sequal to Analogue? Pretty cool. You can also transfer your saves and start where you left off.
Spoilers about the endings:
I wonder if you can transfer over the ending where you save both AIs? That seemed like a joke/extra ending since you basically had to "cheat" using information that the character couldn't have had access to at the time to get it.
