Giant line ups in front of the Apple Store for people who will buy them so they can ship them overseas to sell for more money.
Can't blame them honestly. But this one is launching in a lot of places at once so it might be a tad bit better as far as reselling goes. They are still going to be crazy on Ebay right after launch though.
If the new chip is in fact the same dual-core CPU as before, and the GPU is what is much beefier, should I expect that general responsiveness of the UI wouldn't be much different? More pixels to render, countered by the better GPU, or is rendering images such a big component of general UI operation that it might be a pretty noticeable upgrade?
If it's the former, a cheaper iPad 2 looks pretty good in comparison.

The iPad2 was pretty responsive from the home screen, I'm not sure how much faster this will be in comparison.
If you mean in web stuff... hopefully, but web rendering is a pretty complex issue that doesn't always benefit from better hardware.

Well, the screen itself is a big selling point to a person like myself, if I were to consider an apple iPad. But I am guessing they are vastly overstating the power of the a5x. I would suspect that the UI would be more responsive still though. I think it really depends how it is all implemented.
with four cores I can't imagine it will take a step backwards, but I'd be pleasantly surprised if they managed to make it faster
The big problem with web rendering on mobile devices isn't usually processing power or even data throughput, but dealing with HTTP requests. Most wireless broadband radio protocols are designed for throughput, not latency, so when you're calling up a lot of CSS files, 2KB icons, several dozen thumbnails all at once the browser is making a ton of requests at once, and then it has to wait if any of them time out or if packets get lost.
LTE will fix that a bit where it's available, but it's still going to make certain types of mobile browsing feel slow when compared to a wired broadband connection.
Can't pre-order on the irish apple store. I guess that'll open up in a few days. If not i'll be queuing up at the apple reseller here as we've no apple store.
So then I wonder if 1gb of RAM(if true) might lend more general UI/Web performance?
I'm not particularly aware as to what limitations the 512 mb of RAM imposed on the iPad2. I would say that in general, I was always a little disappointed with the web rendering, but then, it sounds like that might be partly a wi-fi thing?
most of that RAM is going to be headed toward the graphics framebuffer and handling all of the big giant retina class images that go into UI's and such
so yes maybe a little but not enough to write home about
Prior to today, the maximum size of an image you could have in memory in an iOS app without entering dangerous waters was about 1024x1024
You could squeeze about six of those into an iPhone 3GS without it crashing (if you were lucky, and even then it was stupidly slow). Keep in mind those images individually were much larger than the screen itself
now the screen alone on the iPad is bigger than what Apple's own guidelines says is "too big" ... to process just interface images is going to require a lot of beef.
Hmm, I don't see a $60 price tag for LTE, just $30 for 2 gigs and $50 for 5 gigs, which seems about in line with cell phone plans, or maybe slightly cheaper at the 5 gig rate.
Edit: Er, $30 for 3 gig with AT&T, so a better rate all around.

yeah that was my bad, the $60 price is for their home LTE service:
I want a Verizon or an AT&T(not that I have any love for them) to offer a $50-70 mostly unlimited LTE plan through a portable cell receiver device that I can use for both home web use, and for pairing with ipad/ipod touch like devices, and maybe save people a little scratch on data in total.

Their LTE network probably wouldn't be able to stand up to unlimited home use, once people started using it for things like Steam updates or Netflix.
i just got told about a promotion but i haven't heard the $ specifics and won't till friday, so i am gonna wait till then to order perhaps... which means i won't get my ipad for forever?
hm
LTE would be cool but monthly fees suck so i dunno. starbucks' and trains and all have wifi anyway and subways are underground. hm

I also don't really get the lining up at the Apple store thing. Especially when you can order it online and sometimes FedEx delivers your iPhone 4 a day before launch and you don't even have to put on pants.

this just continues the LOL at my coworker who bought an ipad 2 in mid february and just bought a Mark II camera.
When you buy expensive technology you should always research release dates of successors beforehand.
"I wasn't going to buy the ipad 3 anyway" well, ok, but I'm guessing you could have used that extra 100 bucks you could have saved by waiting three weeks.

I really, really, REALLY like my transformer prime. I use it a ton. It is fantastic. I adore using the splashtop remote app to use my computer remotely. I love Kairosoft games, I really enjoy this tablet. BUT, I like gaming on my PC and 360 a hell of a lot more at the end of the day. Some things are great on the tablet like the previously mentioned Kairosoft games. They are not, however, going to top being able to play games like Dwarf Fortress and Jagged Alliance 2 on my PC, or WWE 12, Operation Darkness, etc on 360.
One of those 50 cent apps on the android market is an ebook for kids about dinosaurs. It has been given the following review:
Dinosaur's rule!
I love dinosaurs especially stegosaurus and t rex and utahraptor and compsagnathus and toujangosaurus and diplodocus and iguanodon and the loch ness monster. I don't like triceratops though so only 4 stars.

$60/Month
well
I was considering dropping my iPhone 4S's tethering plan and getting the LTE 3
but dang $60 bones?
And I'm not even in a LTE coverage area, I don't think.
Wifi only for me.

I walked into the computer store on my university campus and just picked an ipad up the week they launched without needing to preorder.
Though I guess the situation would be different in a big city.
Also I love watching apple press stuff but the way they talk is so annoying. "Magical devices" "post-pc world"
Also favorite gaming thing being the ipad is ridiculous.
I don't know why that made me laugh so much.
