Pirates was riddled with bugs at release. I've heard that although most of those have been fixed in the time since, it is still an unchallenging, repetitive, bland game.
SPAZ is a fun little game that just really overstays its welcome. For the first 10 or so hours its formula of space combat and progressively bigger ships and cooler weapons is totally great! But like cckerberos says about Pirates, the game is repetitive and bland, and you reach the end of the learning curve a long time before you've beat the game. Once you've seen it all and got it all figured out, it starts to feel like a big grindy slog. But I want to repeat that I really enjoyed the first 10-15 hours of the game.
Well add me to the list of deactivated cards. Went to finally buy sonic because Dark angel X is too persuasive and my card was declined. Rang the bank and they can't switch it back on until Monday because while they answer phones on Sunday, it seems they don't want to actually do any work. Ah well, will save me money when it comes round to the new sales I'm sure!
Pish posh. The sales will still be on until 1pm EST on Monday. Plenty of time to get your card deactivated again
In addition to running well on a Commodore 64 you found in an elementary school dumpster, Just Cause 2 is arguably the second most fun one can ever have playing a sandbox game, right behind Arkham City. I didn't even bother to grab GTA IV as a daily deal the other day, because it was "No thanks, I've got that base already covered x 1000."
I'll have to refute this statement. JC2 is vastly superior. Until I can shoot a gas canister, grapple onto it, and ride it into the sunset in Arkham City, it will be an inferior sandbox game.

Annoyingly I work until around then on a Monday (I'm in the UK). I'll try to rush home to get my card back and do some crazy spending in the last half an hour or so

I agree with this, was hoping for the battles to grow closer to the scale of Gratuitous Space Battles, and was sorely disappointed. Having one or two fighter scale ships at endgame seemed pointless. Still, worth a dozen hours of fun.

Darn time zones! Foiled again!
I suppose you could also wake up extra early Monday. Or you could just update your wishlist a bit and see what happens...

The only competition Just Cause 2 has when it comes to ridiculously fun sandbox chaos are Saints Row 2 and Saints Row The Third.

I'm told it's also a good bit like Escape Velocity, which is what put it as a game to watch for. I'll take a game that wears out a bit early for ANYTHING that reminds me of Escape Velocity.
What I really want is that Escape Velociy Online game that I made up in, I think, the last Steam Thread. Until that happens I'll take anything else I can get.

On the bright side Generations isn't on sale (if that's the Sonic in question) so you won't need to rush!
Quick question: What's the difference between a gift where the game's picture appears on top (and with custom text), and one where just the generic black/gray gift box appears?
Wow, SteevL gifted me Orcs Must Die!. I don't know when I'll get to it with the Zeboyd Duo in the way, but I will. As a huge Deception fan, I have to.
Thanks!
You'll find OMD to be much faster-paced than Deception. I've only played a little bit of the first two games in that series. Seemed cool, but a bit hard to play these days.
And with that, I'm all out of gift copies of Orcs Must Die!
Deception 3 is the best in the series, IMO, but Trapt is easily the best looking.
I know it's a bit late, but I am hella digging LA Noire. The shooting is clunky; the conversation system is simplistic and confusing at times; the world honestly doesn't look that great on my machine; the faces, though well-animated, sometimes look like movies being projected onto a blank face (if that makes any sense) which looks weird as hell; the street crimes are boring shooting sections I've stopped paying attention to entirely; and sometimes the game completely forgets what tone it's going for and has you *minor mid-game plot spoiler*
dangling from a chandelier in the Hall of Records like Prince of Persia what the hell is even going on
.
And I am 20 hours in and cannot wait to go back for more. For all the things that feel half-implemented, every major character I've met so far has been pretty brilliant, even if they're total scumbags. I just got to a case on Vice where you run into your old partners from Homicide and Traffic and was filled with childish glee at having the gang back together (note that every time I get a new partner I miss my old one, despite the fact that when I got my old one I longed for the one before that and so on and so on). The game does a real good job of making the characters you spend a lot of time with (IE. your partners) likeable but flawed. Even my current partner, who is a grade A twat, has been growing on me since the first case I had with him. Even the people you're locking up rarely feel like caricatures, except *major Homicide spoiler*
The Black Dahlia murderer who was a pretentious dickmongler. Fuck that guy.
I especially like Cole. I was expecting it to be a kind of Mafia II situation where you were the one impartial party in an ocean of misogyny and racism, but then I picked "Lie" during a conversation and Cole unleashed a "You left-wing-leaning parasite!" on me and I was glad the PC hadn't been surgically transplanted into the 40s from 2011. He's still a basically-good guy, but there are little touches like that one that get rid of the weird feeling that your character has been designed to fit in with your beliefs and values rather than the ones he would actually hold in the time period he's in.
Went to finally buy sonic because Darkangel X is too persuasive and my card was declined.
Bro.
Also, I had a game of Payday solo. That is balls hard and I do not recommend it.
I imagine it's like a whole other game. Getting 3 CPUs to coordinate a bank robbery with you must be like herding cats.
Having just given a solo round a shot myself, it's more like having a bunch of pet dogs who can use guns... They just follow you around and shoot at the cops. Anything that requires more than that you have to do yourself. So, yeah, it's not easy.
With that in mind, if any other new would be bank robbers want a partner, I am available. Would love to play this game properly.
If anyone's up for a go at Payday I'm heading on to it now, never played it so don't know how anything works really. Did just find out that my 360 headset works with windows, so I can talk!

Resisting SC: Conviction for another two hours. I have served the Newell well this far, may he give me a few hours respite.
Watch a YouTube video of the interrogation segments. Then try your pathetic little "resisting."
To counter this, I hated Conviction. It's ultra-linear, and with little to no emphasis on stealth, since you can just gun down enemies, instead of them being dangerous. The best Splinter Cell is Chaos Theory, get that instead, it has atmosphere, whereas Conviction doesn't, doesn't require sign-up to Ubisoft's bullshit system, and the gameplay is actually fun.
Odd question - does Steam have any kind of "find games that will run on my PC" feature? I'd love to see a filtered list of older games that would run on my Netbook. I love buying these new sale games but I have to play them on the wife's laptop so I don't get to play them as much...

To counter this, I loved Conviction for exactly the reason long-time fans of the Splinter Cell series hated it. Unlike the other SC games, Conviction doesn't mercilessly punish you for breaking stealth, it just rewards you for being stealthy.

If by fun, you like repeating the same sections repeatedly because the slightly bullshit detection system screws you over repeatdly. Its a great game, but I'd still rather just sit down and play conviction these days. I guess I dont have the patience to retry area x for the 12th time.

Also, Unless I made the mistake of playing on the hardest difficulty, there's no way in hell you can get into a straight up firefight and come out alive. You still have to be stealthy. And I agree with lawndart. It's science that positive reinforcement for doing something right is better than negative reinforcement for doing something wrong and the old games where very liberal with negative reinforcement.

I agree 100%. I never liked the artificial requirement of stealth-or-die. Conviction took Splinter Cell's solid mechanics and story and added to them, and gave you the flexibility to badass your way out of a jam. Because hey, Sam's a goddamn ex-SEAL covert government agent. I think it's fair to say he could take down a handful of armed thugs in a fight when he needs to. I mean, it's not going all Call of Duty or anything.
Life is so much easier if you're stealthy, but you can feel free to cause the occasional ruckus and get out with most limbs intact. I think it's a fair balance, but of course, if you want high-level stealth action, it's not for you.

And ze clock keeps ticking. Do I want payday.. hm hm hm hm hmmmm. I'm like a stack of waffles all up ins.
Me too - I was set to buy Civ V but now I'm thinking about waiting because I think Civ IV might be better to buy since it would run on all the laptops in the house. But it's so tempting looking at the price.
Yes you want it chocobolicious, and then you want to install it really quickly, I think Taranis is coming on but I think this will be hard with just two of us!

I'm going to advise everyone to get Payday. Mainly so I'll have some partners in crime this week.
Do it.

Yeah, I fall into this camp. Occasional stealth in games is fine. Extended stealth means I stop playing it out of frustration or disinterest. To each their own.

Between this and Kane & Lynch 2, I'd love to try and set up some sort of PA "crime pays" multiplayer night.

Not really. You could always email the gift redemption URL but steam will give you up upon redemption.
Also, I believe gift givers/receivers are auto-added to each others friends list upon redemption.
