I have never played a turn based civilisation game. Let us say that I wish to get into a space based version of one of these games, having heard great things from my fellow humans regarding them.
In terms of quality, I have heard that I cannot go wrong with galactic civilisation 2. How much truth is there in this claim?
skip that, buy alpha centauri off of GOG (it's on GOG, right?)
Has anyone here actually played Sol Survivor? I'm looking for something to scratch that TD itch that's been plaguing me ever since Wintermaul on Frozen Throne. Defense Grid was OK, I didn't really like the first-person stuff in Sanctum (so I don't think I'd be into Dungeon Defenders), and there are just so many TD's out there that I just don't know what to try. Something with co-op would be pretty rad, too. Any suggestions?

First things, if by "space based" you're okay with "science fiction setting", you need to immediately stroll on over to GoG.com and pick up Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.
GalCiv2 would be a good second choice if you want turn-based sci-fi goodness that includes actually designing, building, and moving spaceships.
GalCiv 2 is a fine game. AC has more 'heart' due to better differentiated factions, but GC2 does a few things very right. Designing ships is fun, the game is relatively well balanced for a 4x game (There are ways to break it, and ways to screw yourself, but neither are very obvious). The AI is ok.
It has a bit of 'blandness' issue that the game tends to always end up going more or less the same. But it scored in the 85-90 range for a reason, it's quite good at 'one more turn.'

Specifically I like space ships.
I have heard that alpha centauri is one of the best civilisation games ever, but I got the impression it was still a mostly land based game.
I like armadas. I enjoyed Sins a lot, but that is rts. It was pretty shallow so I got sick of it eventually.

Gal Civ 2 is very good, certainly one of the better 4X games out there (not quite as good as MOO2 but then what game is?)
The best feature for me would be the ship editor, its brilliant! I have spent hours just building my own spaceships.
If you wan't something with a little more action then Sins of a Solar Empire is a decent alternative. It is also a bit more friendly to new players especially if you have limited experience with 4X games.
*fast thread is fast!
If you like spaceships then GalCiv2 is the way to go, the builder allows you to create some truly hideous beasts

I also specifically want a turn based game, incidentally. I'm trying to branch out. Never really got into a good one.
I'm currently playing a bit of europa universalis 3 at the moment, but that is real time with pauses. I spend so much time paused.
I like it more than I thought. Currently War Poped most of italy and will soon be putting my sights on either the heretics around the mediterranian or some of the more annoying european countries.
I've got two aims. Hold back the renaissance for the entire world and catch that whole protestant idea England wants to sling out into the world on the rebound and slam it back down their throat accompanied by warships.
There can only be one Pope.
Just to give you an idea of how I like to go about these things.

GalCiv sounds right up your alley, then. You're right, Alpha Centauri is solely land-based, just on a different planet with different tech and playing the best Civilization game of all time.
Fixed that for you. But yeah, GalCiv is a better choice if you specifically want turn-based plus spaceships. Although for 4x games, I prefer real-time, especially after playing the incredible indie Star Ruler.

damn it sequence is hard. It's also hilarious and full of the dryest sarcasm possible. I love it... I just need to fell the rhythm, possibly also feel the rhyme. Only then can I get on up.
You guys have just convinced me to add GalCiv to my wishlist, which going on past experience means I'll probably buy it. I hope you're happy with yourselves. It's quite an old game though isn't it? Hopefully it will get cheaper at Christmas, like Anno, Tropico 4, and Cities XL. I want some peaceful building damnit. And maybe some spaceship building.

Welp I grabbed it on sale. Thanks guys.
I basically already made up my mind I just wanted confirmation it is actually worth the scores. I don't really trust reviewers.

unless Sequence is a heartwarming video game adaptation of the inspiring story of the first Jamaican bobsled team you have already disappointed me.

I'd barely finished posting this before @Gaardean went ahead and gifted Sol Survivor to me. Downloading now! Thanks so much, you classy motherfucker.

GalCiv2 has been cheaper before, back when it was exclusive to Impulse, so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets discounted eventually.
Also, as one final selling point, it features a race of evil space squirrels.
Yes, really.

Lepwave gave me a copy pretty recently. I'm really enjoying the game, it feels a bit more in depth than Defense Grid, with more options and variety going on. And co-op is in the game. I think it's pretty solid.
Talking about GalCiv2, how is Sins of a Solar Empire? Last 4X game I tried was Sword of the Stars I and for whatever reason, I was massively disappointed. I can't even exactly recall why.
'Real Time' 4X kind of scares me, especially for 20 bucks :P

I bought a retail copy of Sins ages ago and still have never got past the tutorial. For some reason it intimidates me and makes me feel stupid. Then steals my lunch money.

Enjoy GalCiv2, but make sure to go back and pick up Master of Orion 2 on GoG at some point. The best 4X space game ever made, and one of my top 5-10 games ever made.

Heh, I still have my cd for it as well, but I went ahead and bought it from GoG when they added it because A) if any game deserves more money from me, it's MoO2 and I will probably lose that cd eventually. Though not having done so thus far is pretty amazing.

I love SoaSE.
To be fair it is a 4X-lite, It looks a great deal more complicated than it actually is. Really It's a RTS with 4X trappings.
Still has tech-trees and planetary upgrades, but at its heart it's just a space RTS.
All this talk of 4X makes me a sad panda that they never made a sequel to MOO2
Also, guys are making me feel a bit anxious about Brink now but let's see almost finished downloading. Thanks to @Masume for sorting out that 4-pack for Dungeon Defenders which I might get to try in a few hours...slowass net

We don't. I searched :P
then what the hell did I just get invited to? So I shouldn't have given them my SS number?
I'm not sure what this means.
