Headsets for Xbox with splitscreen and split audio?
So I've been playing splitscreen MW3 with my gf for a while, and I was considering getting headsets for us. However, one thing I want to know if it would be possible for each of us to only hear the sound for our section of the splitscreen? Otherwise there's really not much point if we're hearing the audio for the other person in a totally different part of the map. If only certain headsets/games are capable of this, that would be helpful to know as well.
Some quick searching I've read stuff about how if both players have Live they can talk to each other while splitscreen (but does that split the audio too?). I've also read how some headsets need to plug directly into the TV and hence can't get split audio, etc. Thanks!
What an interesting question! I've not delved too much into headsets or the like, (Just bought my first pair, actually. Turtle Beach. Love 'em.)
As far as audio "splitting," I'm not quite sure I understand. I would THINK that each headset would just play what you'd be seeing on your screen, especially considering how important sounds are to MW games. (Footsteps, grenades, etc.) It wouldn't make sense to let both of you hear each other's screen. Instead of screen-watching, would it be screen-listening? Either way, the tricky part would come when you were hooking everything up. If your TV has multiple Audio Out jacks on the back of it, I would think you'd be fine. My new-ish TV only has one, though the adapter that came with my headset looks like it allows for another connection to be plugged in to it while it's plugged into the TV. I guess if you use an HDMI cable you have to buy a separate 360-specific device, so YMMV.
I'm actually heading out right now, but if no one's given a concrete answer when I get back, I'll see what my Google Fu turns up. Hope this helped somewhat!

On the console the game would have to support this natively and I know of no such feature. Having the outputs is not enough; the game would have to split the audio itself as neither the console or any home theatre hardware would be able to know the difference in the audio that was played through it. It cannot discern between your audio and her's.
Unfortunately this has just been a limitation of splitscreen console gaming since its creation. In addition to the game having to support it the console would also have to specifically be capable of keeping those audio channels separate which might involve an audio/video cable with multiple sets of audio outputs.
The Xbox360 controllers have headset jacks built into them - it would make sense for the the audio from that jack to be tied only to the audio for the player it is controlling but I'm not sure it works that way.
Maybe get one of the super cheap headsets they bundle with the gold packs and test it?

The jack in the controller only sends out voice chat audio, not game sounds. I don't think this is possible.
and I wonder about my neighbors even though I don't have them
but they're listening to every word I say
