But showing a girl farting and using feces as ammunition might be a little much for the publisher. It's stupid, I know. But I think you're right, there really is no good reason to restrict it. Heh, wasn't there an entire episode built around women not being able to use gross-out humor like men do because of double-standards? The "queef" episode, I believe.

I actually have not seen that episode. I am scared to ask.

A queef is very similar to a fart, it merely utilizes a different orifice.
Yeah, you get it.

I think they could use that whole thing to poke some real fun at gender bias or percieved gender bias or what have you. I don;t so much think not having a playable female character (which some sites are STILL saying) is gender bias as much as it is a lost opportunity for some funny stuff.
All I was going for with my earlier comment is that, some times stories have characters and sometimes those characters have genders. You don't get upset that Master Chief in Halo is a guy or that Cloud in FFVII is a guy or any of the other games, books or movies where the lead is a male. It wouldn't have been out of line or offensive for them to make a game where the new kid was a boy. But it's all moot at this point since they do allow you to play as a girl. Which, also doesn't upset me.
EDIT: Now, it would be awesome if they went huge plot twist and you were forced to create a boy character and then at the end it turns out you were a girl the whole time. Some of the boys reactions could have been hilarious. Maybe Butters is in love with you the whole time and is all confused about it. Like in his bisexual episode.

The difference between this and Halo/FFVIII is those games don't promise character creation, or allow you to create your own avatar.
Pretty big difference.
"A new take on the epic fantasy genre... Darkly comic, relatable characters... twisted storyline."
"Readers who prefer tension and romance, Maledictions: The Offering, delivers... As serious YA fiction, I’ll give it five stars out of five. As a novel? Four and a half." - Liz Ellor My new novel: Maledictions: The Offering. Now in Paperback!

The issue is that you had zero problems coming up with super high profile example of videogame stories where you play as a guy, the list where you have to play a woman is pretty light. That lightness is concerning. Cloud isn't the same kind of self insertion character that RPGs tend to have now, he is a defined character with defined reactions to other characters. In the kind of generic writing style that has to work with if you're a cat person berserker or a lizard person wizard it's just lazy to exclude women.
Also moot, not mute. Learned that from heard conversation and screwed it up for years in writing.

haha. Thanks, I'll fix that.
In my head I always just think of all games as RPGs since you're just assuming the role of a character or witnessing the events through them.
But back to South Park. I am very excited about this game and can't wait.

Er... Halo Reach let you play as a boy or a girl, and you could choose what kinds of armor you wore and what colors it was.

Just Joystiq, unless I missed something. (And also every site that quotes Joystiq, but that is a given)
Yeah, we all know how great the "just release it already" thing works for Obsidian.
Delays are only useful if the developers are able to work on the game during that time. Alpha Protocol was delayed for half a year and that didn't help the game.

They have said before that the release date was pushed back so they could work on it more.
So we get stiff once in a while. So we have a little fun. What’s wrong with that? This is a free country, isn’t it? I can take my panda any place I want to. And if I wanna buy it a drink, that’s my business.
There's tons of other stuff and little updates here and there on (nearly) all my game threads (P:E, M&M and so on) which I've neglected recently. I plan to compile them and post new information in the specific threads now that I have more free time again, but this has to wait till' next week as I'm taking a vacation with friends over the weekend and I'm pretty sure I won't be capable of writing words again for a while. So, till then! Wish you all a great time!
I'm actually a bit disappointed by it. Sounds like we're only getting costume dlc (considering Obsidian is one of the few companies to get story DLC right), since they rather would bring the extra content into future episodes of the show. Brings a sequel into question as well.
Hopefully I'm reading too much into it and they will allow Obs to do their own thing.

Nah. It just reads like they came into the project with way more content than they ever would have been able to deliver and then had to figure out how to trim it down to fit it into the game. Just like every other game.
Argh, due to the poor wording on Polygon's part, there are now 'articles' around that are accusing Obsidian of being the evil company that tones scripts down (OBSIDIAN) and enforces bad DLC.
(As if Obs had any say in this)
Did I mention I hate gaming journalism? I really, really do.

The question that enters my mind is: Will we get Alpha Protocol'd or will we get Knight of the Old Republic II'd?
Sounds they everything they cut was still very early on so we'll be getting a completed game and they were opposed to making stuff dlc that you'd have to pay more for later.
It does sound like they bit off more than they could chew. Since they are so fixated on it and taking the "when it's done" attitude, I think it will turn out well. It seems like they are keeping focus. We will not have a DNF situation.
- Apparently the gamescom presentation was about the kids entering a *tavern* which results in princess kenny getting kidnapped/rescue mission.
- Another preview talks a bit about how skills are presented in combat again. As an example a armor buff has the kid wrapping himself in aluminium foil.
I feel kind of let down that all of the abilities have these normal mundane explanations such as farts and aluminum foil, when South Park constantly has crazy supernatural shit going on in it all of the time. Hell one of its characters literally is, a supernatural shit.

Yeah but when the kids play, it's always been through their imaginations.

Did it show in the actual gameplay though?
It's a South Park game. I don't think avoiding gender bias is on the to do list there, folks.
