It seems like a perfectly competent game, but I'm not all that impressed. I like the Fable/WoW art style, but I can feel myself finally getting a little tired of that aesthetic. It screams Darksiders in the sense that it apes a lot of stuff from other games and seems to do it well, but there wasn't anything unique enough about the demo's implementation of any of it to hold my attention. I was skipping cutscenes and rushing through dialogue by the time I got to the guy who tells you to hold X (which is horrendous if you're using a keyboard). The plot is going to decide if how far out from release I buy it, but with RA Salvatore behind it I expect nothing that will convince me to pay full retail. The EA account/black screen junk rubbed me the wrong way too, but the former a little less so when I esc'ed out and was told I could actually opt-out despite the previous screen giving no indication that I could do so.
I'll probably grab it when it hits the $5 bargain bin on Steam, but that still results in giving Curt Schilling money.
This demo kind of killed my excitement. I thought the world looked cool, but everybody in it is so stiff and lifeless. The combat feels loose and the gui is just ugly. The story doesn't seem that interesting either.
so the game plays the story cinematic fine, then when you're in a cave right at the beginning or something(I have no idea, because I cant see anything.)
The actual game itself is apparently running just fine. I can open my inventory screen and everything, move around(I can see the minimap) but literally nothing else.
Oh, and the inventory screen is ghosted on my screen even after I close it. Awesome.

greatsword+quake is an awesome combination. combo them with the greatsword and then on the last hit that knocks them up, do a chained quake.
also, the game has a weird way to deal with corpses. they stay indefinitely, but it seems like, even if you're standing right by one, if you enter and exit the menu it will disappear. I guess this is a fine compromise. Disappearing corpses bug me, especially in RPGs. So lazy, especially when you're making a game for PC users, too.
also, someone in here said combat is wonky, but it's super responsive so I don't know what planet you're playing from. enjoying (or not enjoying) the aesthetic or whatever is opinion but combat is smooth.
For real... Switching between dagger attacks to ninja striked to psychic knives to fire staff to lightning bolt is so smooth and seamless. I am in love with this game
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
The controls are responsive enough, I love the way you can seamlessly switch between styles like Fable, but actually hitting dudes doesn't feel good and I'm not sure why.
i think i nailed why the whole guards/crime system felt wrong in this game:
saints row has spoiled me.
i'm used to killing massive waves of law enforcement and getting off scot free at any of a multitude of easily accessed locations
around the 40th guard i killed, part of me was expecting "oh, there'll be a popup any time now, guiding me to some forest altar where my sins will be forgiven and i can piss the guards off ALL OVER AGAIN".
but i don't think that's going to happen.
and that's a sad thing, because they made killing things rather fun.

I was very impressed by the demo. I stuck mostly to the big two-handed weapons and Harpoon/Quake, though Chakrams are a lot of fun too. Later on I picked up a fire-enchanted Hammer, which causes explosions on every attack. The ME3 bonus was a genius move by EA. I'd never heard of this game before, and now it's a definite day 1 purchase for me.

Yeah, I hadn't paid any attention to it either until they said we'd get ME3 stuff for playing it. Gonna use Blockbuster's month-long rental thing to play through this during the lull before ME3.
Where'd you find chakrams, Evangir? I was playing as a backstabbing mage and really wanted to try them out, but couldn't find any in the store.

I found a generic set in the store at the Inn. Didn't do much damage compared to my Hammer, but they sure did look cool.
Well, that was interesting. If the game stays base around the combat, particularly the combo system, ol be worth playing through. Unexpectedly found the might tree kind of boring, the dagger combos are sweet though, the tier 2 with the gauranteed crit with knockback was rocking faces and with all the skills to up crit damage I'm guessing that move will continue to rule for a long time.
Had some weird graphical glitches and the arrest system sucks (seems like the only way to 'resist arrest' is to slaughter everyone in town, literally. Fun fight, but Jesus, seriously?). The might/finesse destiny seemed very underwhelming but did have a top tier bonus.
I focused mostly on the weapon combo skills, may have to try it again focusing on getting quake and the mark of fire in the Mage tree or some other active skills.
Fun game. Will probably pick it up when I'm done with ME3. Little buggy on the 360.
The ranged Sorcery weapon (staves?) is pretty great. It's pretty easy to rapid-fire/charge shot one or two enemies down before they reach you, then play dodge-roll keep away to keep on doing that. More fun to switch to chakrams or the staff or anything else, though. Not seeing much reason to use arrows, except to help you reach destinies and up your ranged damage as a nonSorcerer.
I'm providing ambience.

Oddly the version I played in December was really nowhere near this buggy. I suspect that was a pretty much complete build of the game though. I got stuck in a frozen conversation with a villager and that ended my demo experience. Not worried though, still definitely getting this game because I loved it. Just hope those bugs are confined to just the demo.

They said the only way they could get a demo out on time was to release a several month old build and try to copy over some fixes from the later builds.

Wow, this thread couldn't be more bi-polar. Half of you seem to love it and want to have it's children, and half of you think it's terrible. Guess that means I should get the demo.

As someone who actually writes software for a living, that doesn't make any sense at all. Either they have the worst version control in the world, or somebody screwed something up really bad...like lost some code. The idea that you need to take a several months old build and somehow latch later fixes on to it, for any reason at all, is so antithesis to software quality...I just...I don't know. It sounds very bush league.

That's just what I remember being said about the demo. I looked up the direct quote for you afterward:
"Unfortunately the only way to get both the demo and the game out the door on time was to branch the demo off of the main game a few months back, then try to copy over bug fixes from the main game to it where possible, while cutting out all the bits of the game that should NOT show up in the demo in order to get the download size down to something reasonable.
As a result, a great many polish bits and bug fixes from the main game didn't make it into the demo (some particualrly noteworthy fixes relate to audio cutting out or being significantly delayed). It's frustrating for us because we want the demo to be as shiny as possible, but in the end of the day we wanted to focus the bulk of our bug fixing and polish efforts on the final game rather than the demo. Hopefully you'll thank us for that on Feb 7th."

Oh, that makes much more sense. They didn't take an old build, they did a source branch. Still seems a bit hamfisted, but is a much more legitimate way to do version control than actually taking an old build and trying to get it up to current standards.

Im just happy they took the time to make a demo. Too many games don't do that these days.

Yes, unfortunately the prevalent stance on demos tends to be "oh we'll put one out three months after release, if the game sold a billion copies, maybe".

It's not so much mash X to win.
More X,.....X, X, roll, defend, Y,.....Y, Y, roll LT+Y, LT+X, roll, roll, Y, Y, Y, Y, Y, Y, Y.
And those moves are before you unlock some really powerful combos.

I love the little quirks the demo has.
I have it installed to an SSD. I was really weirded out by the load times being 30-60 seconds.
Then I realized that if I Alt+Tab the moment a loading screen begins and immediately Alt-Tab back into the game, it skips the loading screen completely and I have a load time of 2-3 seconds.

Yup. The regular download needs origin but there's one you can get on Steam as well.

This is stupid and also dumb
This applies to the UI in general, it's really bad

Great. I am elated. Downloading demo now.
Once right at the start
Once after the first stealth kill
and Once after I talked to the future card reader
damn you game let me play you
And people really need to stop hiring Salvatore or McFarlane to do anything.
Otherwise the combat's pretty fun, if basically Darksiders and the idea of a Chakram wielding mage is pretty cool.
But not $60 cool.
The destinies seemed cool on the surface, but after reading them all I found that they offer passive bonuses only. How boring.
