Pudge is a very different case. He depends too much on great play by his team and bad play by the other team. If he has a bad early game then it's too hard for him to recover. Antimage can keep farming regardless. And Pudge isn't a carry, so it doesn't matter.
Antimage has always been balanced around his blink. The reason he's been so bad for so long is because of blink.
"All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible." - T.E. Lawrence
From what I understand, a few of the traditional AM counters simply aren't in the game yet (meepo and siren), which is why he's so powerful currently, leaving you with somewhat limited options... BKB "fixes" his only real counter which is hard CC, and he can always get one since blink lets him safely farm pretty much the whole game.
disclaimer: I have extremely limited Dota knowledge. grains of salt, etc.

is this like you trust that 6.73 is gonna have some good balance changes or has there been small hints and stuff posted by icefrog over the past few months or so or what
keep in mind when you talk about countering AM, your team still has to win. The counter to Doom is pretty much any healer, and AM + Dazzle seems pretty scary when you have to play Doom as a tanky hero who now has a massive armor debuff.

New heroes and balance changes, but I honestly think Page is expecting way to much of this version.
I'm not expecting anything at all because I have no problem with AM. I do expect him to get some nerfs, but I'm more looking forward to some new items, new heroes, hero remakes, and the Christmas stuff. Because 7.73 is a major version change and a holiday version.
And naga can counter AM on paper, but she still needs way more farm to actually do it, and is way less likely to get it. That's why she's not a top pick and AM is. And naga is my favourite hard carry. The best thing she's got going for her against AM is her ult in team fights.
But thats my point. The only things we know were getting with it are the usual balance changes and "more than one" new hero. I haven't seen anything about new items or hero remakes. Have I just missed it?
I still have a hard time accepting the excuse that anti-mage is not imba because his counters are not in the game yet. It just seems that one hero should not have a presence huge enough that the other team is expected to counterpick to deal with him. And even then, having a player who's main role in the game is just to lock up anti-mage seems crazy.
I think he's just kind of OP/FotM right now. I linked it a few days ago but at the SMM tourney where they played the original DotA antimage was picked 10 times and his team won 9 of those games. And granted a couple characters had a 100% win rate but they were only played in 1 or 2 games which isn't a big sample size. And again I'm not qualified to call any character OP but he's dictated every pro game I've seen him in.
Really it's not that big of an issue since pros can ban him and I don't see him that often in regular matchmaking. In any game like this there's bound to be some OP hero that deserves a ban. Just the lack of draft pick for regular matchmaking only makes it a potential problem.
counterpicks are a big part of dota and i feel like most mobas in general. even most games, probably. there is still skill involved, they can be outplayed, it is just about advantages and disadvantages, pros and cons, not rock paper scissors.
It's not so much that he has no counters in the game.
It's that the hero pool in general is limited. That limits overall builds and strategies. There are plenty of valid team lineups that don't include AM but do include other heroes that aren't in the beta. Without those options teams will default to the next best thing down the line, and that often ends up being AM.
I'm expecting things from 6.73 for these reasons:
- Major version change. It's not a 6.62x balance fix. Whenever there's a major version change there are also changes to the game. New items, new heroes, hero remakes, and so on.
- It's been nearly 6 months since the last version. Obviously Icefrog has had other stuff to work on, but that also means that there's been a loooooong time for competitive players to work through the current map's metagame, from the rise and fall and rise again of Lycan, to Windrunner and all the rest.
- There are 8 heroes not in the cm pool that have been sitting around for those 6 months and any one of them could be added back in, and each will have a huge impact on the metagame. Half of them are already considered to be broken as hell.
- It'll be the Christmas map. There's usually some little bonus for the holidays.
- dota 2.
I hope Icefrog keeps up the 10th map tradition. In wc3 dota every 10 full versions (6.50, 6.60, etc.) gets a hidden bonus minigame thing for the players to figure out. They're usually creative and interesting.

can you elaborate on this? what's CM stand for?
upon googling the 8 heroes not in the pool includes io, the guardian wisp!!!!

Just so I know what we're talking about here, is this a Dota2 patch you're talking about or a new version of the WC3 map?
But I expect that every change that can be ported to dota 2 will be ported to dota 2. Hero balance tweaks are just numbers. Unless there's a remake of a hero that's in dota 2. That could get sticky.
I've said it before, but I think a free to play model would be a problem for hero remakes, which is another reason I'm against it.
About the non-CM heroes:
Because dota is balanced specifically by and for the competitive community there has been a tradition of stable versions and no surprises. Whenever a new hero is put in the game they are not added to the CM pool. Every competitive game is played in CM and the new heroes need a period of testing before they are added to competitive play. This means that pub games are pretty much an open beta for new heroes (with every version of the map already going through a closed beta phase--6.73 is being beta tested right now). Once they've been put through the paces they'll be added to the CM pool, and when that happens there will be another period in which they are always banned (unless they're awful). The same thing happens whenever a hero is remade: they are removed from the pool for at least a couple of updates. When a hero is finally released into the CM pool it often comes with the balance changes they need to be competitive.
On top of that, tournaments are never run in the immediate version of the map. They're run in an older version that's considered stable. Every time a new version comes out it will need post-release balancing and there's no point in wrecking tournaments for it. Currently 6.72f (the most recent version) is the stable version for competitive play, but that's only because it's been out for 6 months.
So when 6.73 finally comes out there will be a couple of brand new heroes, but they won't be seen in tournaments. However, any or all of the 8 non-CM heroes in the current version could be added, which is a big deal.

Gotcha. Sounds like fun times. Looking forward to seeing what we get out of it.
I figured it must be my router that's causing the problem. So I go out and buy a new router after not being able to play for more than a week.
I bring the router home.
I figure what the hell, may as well try one last time before I set up the new router.
I double-click on steam.
It loads up perfectly, as if there had never been a problem.
I haven't even taken the router of the box yet.

I still want to keep the new router, because it's way better, but I'm afraid that if I shut everything down to set it up then I'll be locked out of steam again. :<
So I'm curious if there are hero's that almost never get picked for competetive matches and why? What would be a reason to pick said hero. I have noticed a lack of some popular pub heroes, like bloodseeker or skeleton king, in the competetive matches.
You want a hero that never gets picked in competitive play? Death Prophet (Krob), who was the the most recent one added to dota 2.
Krob is my favourite hero, and it happens that last time I was playing a lot, when I was playing with good people--and this was about 2 years ago or so--Krob went from a meh hero to the absolute top pick and ban (along with Necro).
This was a simple product of a few item buffs and a huge metagame shift. This was around 6.67 or 6.68, or maybe as far back as .48, and back then the game was all about int carries, with Krob and Necro being the best. What they had was a super buffed Bloodstone and a pretty good Heart, along with the first introduction of phase boots, which were at the time an item mostly for int heroes. When they were first introduced phase boots were made with a piece of armour and had like 5 armour on the item or something equally ridiculous. It meant that int carries had an item that made them super fast, hard to kill, and really helped them with their last hitting.
Over time bloodstone was nerfed to what it is now. Look at the way it works now and imagine what it was like then, when every charge added mana and health regen. Once Krob had a bloodstone and a few charges she was impossible to kill, and the best part was that it didn't matter how much disable you used--once Krob turned that ult on everyone around her was going to die. You had these games with epic 5 minute long team fights where Krob and Necro beat on entire teams. It was so much fun.
Now Krob is one of the worst picks in the game. Not the worst hero, but the worst pick. She functions fine in pubs, but you will never see her picked in a competitive game even though she's a good pusher, has good aoe, and works well in team fights. She's too fragile, too item dependant, and her animation is laughably bad, so she can't solo.
You want to know about Bloodseeker? Maybe 8 months ago, probably even less, he was a top pick. He's an amazing mid solo. As long as he can last hit, which he can, his passives make harassing him pointless. He will stay in lane for as long as he wants and farm as long as he wants, and once he gets that radiance it's game over for the other team.
But then people wised up and figured out how to counter him. One way was to pick Doom, because no matter how well Bloodseeker farms, Doom will farm even better, and with his scorched earth he can stay in lane just as long. That means that Doom can get his radiance first.
Competitive dota is a vast, self-perpetuating machine. It feeds off itself in unpredictable ways. What is popular now is always subject to change, but it takes a bold team to make those changes. Plenty of heroes are this close to being top picks, but they need someone to start playing them so that they get noticed. That's what happened recently with Omniknight. Up until a couple months ago Omni was considered to be an awful gimmick hero. Long cooldowns and a low mana pool, needs farm and levels, but he's a melee support hero. Then people figured out he could lane against the likes of Doom and get away with the items he needed.
Every time the metagame shifts it alters the picks. Morphling and Spectre used to be the absolute top carries, with Medusa being up there as well. But then tri-lanes became less popular and pushing became more popular. Now the games are shorter and people are jungling more often, so super hard farming heroes like Morphling and Spectre didn't look as attractive as mid-game powerhouses like Lycan and AM.
What you're looking at in a stable version like we have now is a solid 25-30+ heroes that are all viable picks and bans, with maybe 15-20 more that are situational picks. It may seem like a small amount compared to the overall pool, but since the heroes are always rotating it never gets very repetitive, and every now and then your favourite heroes will be on the top and everything is awesome.
Keep in mind that dota is balanced exclusively for competitive play. In pubs anything goes. Axe, for example, is considered to be a terrible hero for competitive play. But he's a great pub hero. And there's nothing wrong with that.
So Tidehunter is usually a support right? I had a guy yell at me because I wasn't "tanking" and my items were just "random crap" even though I had been supporting a carry and not farming. I had bought an Urn/Magic Stick/Mana boots, Blink Dagger, a couple bracers, the chicken, and a bunch of wards, and was saving for a Vitality Booster.
Was I doing it wrong or was he just a retard? I was still pretty hard to kill and had plenty of time to get my ult off and my combo and either die or run for it while my team mopped up.

Your items seem pretty good as a carry role Tidehunter. The only small critique I have is taking Mana Boots over Power Treads, depending on your team make up of course.
Yeah I like Power Treads just fine, but having the extra mana for myself and my team felt like a better investment since we could maintain a push forever and when I did die it was from the focus of like four people and a little extra health wouldn't have turned that around.
anyone have suggestions for Doom Bringer? Was thinking soul ring/vanguard/scepter .. maybe BoT ... guides say radiance but i cant see myself surviving to pile up 3800gold until i get more of a hang with him
While we're talking item builds, how about Nature's Prophet? I usually find myself in a semi-carry role with him, simply due to the ridiculous amount of farm he can get. I've had pretty good luck with the suggested items (Scythe of Vyse, Desolator, Agahim's, if I remember correctly), but I always feel really squishy. I've recently started going for a Vanguard after treads, and then getting either Desolator or Scythe, depending on my team composition. But I feel like this delays my damage output quite a bit. Is there any other build that would be better suited? Or maybe I should move away from the carry role altogether and just go for full support? I've had one good game where I went scythe, mek, and pipe, so that might work.
Of course, I might be going about this all wrong (only played nine games or so other than bot games).

tbh it doesn't matter what you buy as long as you have >500 GPM (which you should, because you're furion and horrendously overpowered, and I assume if this is a pub build you're getting Midas).
Generally people skip defensive items like Vanguard on him because Scythe + Sprout gives him plenty of durability through CC. Going full support is entirely viable as well - Necronomicon level 3 on him is really really strong...
If you're feeling super spunky then you can go for a total gank Prophet build and rush dagon.
But that build involves very little laning, no farming, and no trees. All you're going to do is teleport in for a gank, sprout, dagon, get your kills, teleport back to the fountain if needed, rinse and repeat. You need a lot of map awareness and a team that isn't afraid to go for it (and has some disables). You can also get every rune by teleporting, which helps ganks even more.
Be warned that he will be paper, even with stats. Prophet is already one of the lowest hp heroes going, but dagon is a bunch of money and doesn't help his hp or defence at all. With a gank build you can totally skip boots, but if you still can't get the dagon fast enough to be ganking squishies for free then it's not really worth it.
Another thing with Prophet (who apparently is no longer named Furion): As soon as you pick and have your items, start roaming the map. You goal should be to explore as much of the important parts as you can in the minute before you have to get into lane. Ask your team to help if they can. Since he can only teleport to places that have been explored it's a great help to have bits of jungle and rune spots available, otherwise you're stuck in the 3 lanes and wherever has been warded.
And don't bother with Agh's on Doom, and certainly don't rush it. If you're going support doom then you're better off with a sheep stick.

Of course, I might be going about this all wrong (only played nine games or so other than bot games).
i was being chased down but they had used all their stuns on my teammates
so i just turn around, drop my stun and level 2 ult with aghanim's scepter so it is bouncing and my tidehunter turns around to ravage
is GODLIKE
DOUBLE KILL
TRIPLE KILL
ULTRA KILL
i'll be awesome with you since the MNF game tonight is going to be horrible
Generally people skip defensive items like Vanguard on him because Scythe + Sprout gives him plenty of durability through CC. Going full support is entirely viable as well - Necronomicon level 3 on him is really really strong...
