Magicka today, all the dlc is on sale as well. Even the one that just came out like two weeks ago.
For some reason I though this was Magic The Gathering or some shit. So, why do 68% of my friends already own this game? Is it really good, or was it really cheap at some point? (or both, I suppose)
It has a really, REALLY awesome and unique magic system:
You've got a bunch of different types of magic, including but not limited to: Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, Hea-...Life. Each type does a specific thing when casted (IE Life fires a healing laser beam, Fire does a flamethrower type effect).
You have five queue slots to put magic into (IE a combo of 5 fire will create a really big flamethrower effect). But then you can also mix and match types of magic (A combo of Fire and WAter will create a steam blast). And on top of that, there are different ways to cast a spell (IE Shoot it, cast on self, cast around self, cast on weapon).
A fire spell shot will be a flamethrower, on self will light you on fire (or dry you if you're wet), around you will create a small aoe explosion, and on weapon will give your melee weapon additional effects.
So the magic system is crazy for one player. With more than one? It becomes insane. You can both fire beams that will join together and be multiplied in effect, you can heal each other and revive each other. And all this is just the basic combinations. There are dozens of other special effect spells. You can cast spells that make you run faster, cast spells that create oil slicks on the ground, and tons of others.
Really awesome game.
It is also really cheap fairly often.
I need to give it another shot now that they've made the single player mode easier.
I had the exact opposite experience. I felt fleet of foot and graceful of limb as I played. I think I played through the game in like three or four sessions, once I got the mechanics down. Everything made sense to me and I just flowed through environments and flattened cops like the slow, ungainly creatures they are.
Perhaps using a controller was your downfall? I play it with KBAM and except for occasions when I screw up the timing, the game plays seamlessly for me.
I played with a pad on PC and had no problems. Haven't played inMomentum, but no other game has ever come close to feeling "right" just in terms of movement through the world. Once you get the momentum tricks down (which, to be fair, the campaign does a poor job of teaching), it's exactly like you say, fluidly shifting over vanishing obstacles and fools.
Also I can accept a game not clicking with someone, but dismissing Mirror's Edge's aesthetic as boring is criminal.
Regardless of how you feel about the gameplay, that is one beautiful game.
Absolutely. Wish it played better though. I read what other people say about it being a freerunning racing game with time trials and environmental interactions and whatnot and think huh? Because it honestly feels like I'm driving a suit of space marine armor or something when I'm playing it. I've pushed a few hours in and at no point did I feel like I was going fast or parkouring or whatever. Maybe if it was in third person, and thus able to show me that through animations, it would be better?
I feel like I'm pushing buttons here when I'm really not trying to like egg on an argument, I just, I dunno. I'm a dude who likes a fuckton of games, I can come up with reasons to buy almost any game Steam has, but when it comes to Mirror's Edge about the only good thing I can say is you can take pretty screenshots if you can keep from throwing your controller through your screen long enough to hit f12.
I had a really good time with the game, but I can definitely understand how some people could just not mesh with it very well. I had some minor control issues with it, though nothing like a lot of people in this thread. I like the game, but I get why it's so divisive.

Oh no. I got my SW:TOR early access email. This will seriously impact my serving of the Newell.

Can someone tell Newell that I would cut off my left arm and give it to him for a Steam version of Shadow Complex?
I think you'd have to send that to Blezinski. Although goodness knows what he'd do with it either, probably mount it on a wall next to his replica lancer or something.

Anyone knows if "The Stars are Left" is worth it? I mean, $1.50 is not much, but I want to know if it's a good add-on, not just the price.
I am also interested in the answer to this.
I don't know about The Stars are Left specifically, but I have a very hard time believing that Magicka plus all the available DLC for it would not be worth the $6.24 I just paid for it.
Man. There is apparently like two dozen different Magicka DLC's.
While, like everybody else, I'm wondering about whether The Stars are Left is worth it, I'm also wondering what of the other large pile of DLC is worth it? What DLC(s) would you recommend to someone who bought the base game at launch and hasn't gotten any of the DLC at all?

Most of them are just costumes. I think only the Vietnam one and The Stars are Left have actual campaigns, and they are rather short (but it's not like Magicka is an extremely long game).
I think The Stars are Left is the only DLC that adds more adventure mode levels.
Then there's a few DLCs that only adds challenges maps. (Like Vietnam and Marshlands)
Most of the others is just robes, weapons, some spells and a couple of versus maps.
Important safety tip before the thread jumps to Big Sale speed:
Remember that partway through the sale the forums will probably be taken down for the holiday outage. Don't panic. You may be required to purchase games in service of the Newell without thread consultation. You can do it!
Lay in provisions and (extra) alcohol in advance as you see fit.

A good rule of thumb is 500ml of whiskey for every hour without the enablers on the forums should be enough to keep you spending money at an appropriate level.

I combined Life with Arcane (Beams) and made healing land mines.
After the last Mirror's Edge control/pipe steam thread discussion (there's one every sale) I installed it on my HTPC and played it with a 360 controller to see if there were any issues.
I never found anything inconsistent about the controls/jumping/catching. Some of the jumps are a bit tighter than I'd like (occasionally frustrating) and some areas don't lay it out for you what exactly you need to do next (so you die trying a few things) but I think of it as a platformer and those issues are pretty standard for platformers. There are some spots where there are too many SWAT and I just decide to take them out because trying to get away from them was frustrating (the vast majority of cops you can ignore or smack them in the fruits). While it is frustrating at times, I rarely felt cheated by the game.
Incidentally in the 'low' violence mode I try to play it in I thought my daughters could watch me play it... My 2-y-o got ideas form the game, like jumping off the couch and walking along the back, but those things are normal for small children. For my athletic 4-y-o daughter, it taught her *moves*.

But...how will Iknow which of the sale items I should purchase, without the benefit of consultation with other sufferers?
I mean, obviously, I should buy everything, but we have our limitations.

Heh, yeah. When I was playing it, my 2 year old (at the time) started setting up a course in the room and running it, jumping off of certain things and grunting.
I'll try to pick up "the stars are left" when I get a chance. The two robes are probably worth the price of admission at least.
My friends end up killing me more in Magicka than they do enemies and it's hillarious. I recommend picking it up if you can get a group going together with minimal bugs/connection issues. The arena and challenge maps can probably be skipped but some of the costumes you can buy come with new weapons/stats.

That's the biggie. Magicka is unstable as heck online, especially with 4 players. It doesn't resolve desyncs very well, either. If you can get a group going without those issues, it's a blast.

And now I have a new desktop wallpaper. Thanks!
Everytime I see someone playing a game on my steamlist, I think "hey ill try that out!"
then I just imagine my poor bosmer ranger, standing around waiting for her adventure to continue...

Is that via the 'disarm' button, or are you talking about some other technique? I pretty much just always ran from them.

Hah, Gamestop screwed me out of my code so I don't have to worry about that!
Did I miss the shit-on-Mirror's Edge-fest? I hope not.
Hate that game, and that stupid pipe.
Stupid, stupid pipe.

How do I make it not look like garbage. I turn every setting to the maximum and it looks like a PS2 game.

No. I shall shit on Mirror's Edge. And I shall shit a lot.
Edit:
There's no way that sounds good, but Imma leave it there.

Life and Arcane are opposites and can't be combined.
Sweet!
Oh, right. Life + Lazor = Giant Life Lazor
Hell yes! The Bit Trip Runner soundtrack is really awesome.
